Still having pre-order issues

For players who have beta keys, unfortunately we are still experiencing problems with pre-ordering on Steam.  We’re working closely with those at Steam and trying to get this problem resolved.  It’s a huge problem for you, the customer, and also for us because we totally want you to buy our game 😀

Here are the different groups of players and what will happen:

  • Those who have a copy of the game already through Kickstarter and from our own pre-order store (which is now down), we will be sending you production keys in the coming future.
  • Those who don’t have beta keys and never played Guns Online will be able to pre-order the game through Steam and play the beta and have a full copy of the game once it is released.
  • Those of you with beta keys will not be able to pre-order through us or Steam for the time being.  Yeah… it’s not ideal.

We ask everyone to hang tight and give us some time while we work it out with Steam.  Please remember that a beta key is a beta key, it is NOT the full game.  Thanks everyone for your patience!

Screenshot competition!

Previous winner, "Explosions" category

Fire! Fire! Oh wait, a Phoenix Rises!

Graphic by yours truly

Hey, it’s your resident game designer at Muse Games, Eric.  As of late, I’ve been taking on a lot of marketing responsibilities like managing our Facebook page for Guns of Icarus Online to bantering on Twitter.  Muse is a small outfit so if any of us have free time or the skillset, we’ll try to fill in additional roles.  To some extent, I’m a jack-of-all-trades and maybe only a master at one (game design, duh).  I think that’s enough to preface the story I’m about to tell, a huge fiasco but also an unexpected win for us at Muse Games.

If something can go wrong… it will definitely go wrong if the internet is involved.

We’ll leave some of the servers up in case you missed it, but won’t be monitoring them quite as closely.

And we’re running another closed beta this weekend!  Surprise, surprise!  What we’re doing this round is ramping up players and of course testing a few more things.  We have to ready our servers for the load during the ominous open beta coming soon.  So we’re doing a promotional drive right now to attract more players into this round of beta.  You can check that out here:

Servers will be up 8/3/12 at 12pm EST to 8/5/12 11:50pm EST.  Get your play on this weekend!  Don’t forget to report bugs at http://bit.ly/MuseBugs

About Contracts

If only life was so simple...

This Editorial Feature was written by Howard Tsao, CEO and Founder of Muse Games Corp.

Recently, some friends and fellow indie devs have been asking me for help to read over a few contracts ranging from publishing, distribution, contests, to RFPs, or partnering on music or art. I’m not a lawyer, and I’m learning as I go as well, but I did accumulate some experience along the way, and learned from some pretty horrific situations, that I could at least offer some feedback on what I find, so hopefully others won’t suffer the same fate. Going over contracts is always difficult and laborious, especially with all the legal mumble jumble being so cryptic, like a code or a riddle to be deciphered. So my goal with this post is go into some examples and to not only point out some things to watch for, but also what I proposed as solutions.
