Thunderdunes Wrap-Up

First of all, I want to give a big thanks to everyone who participated, helped organize, streamed, or tuned in to watch the tournament on Saturday. Special thanks are due to Thomas, who served as match coordinator, and to refs Dynemanti, ATeddyBear and Sgt.Spoon, who also handled signups. This was the first-ever tournament for Guns of Icarus Online, and we’re immensely grateful for the wonderful turn-out and level of excitement for the event. There were a few hitches, and we can’t thank everyone enough for suffering through them and for bearing with us as we learned some hard lessons. We will make sure that we do things much better for our next tournament. Overall though, we had some great matches, saw some really interesting competitive play, and had a lot of fun.

I’ll discuss some of the details in a moment, but first, congratulations are due to our winners! Here are the final standings (brackets and complete results here):

First place and the title of Champions of the Dunes go to the crews of Saint Rocket and the Ergonomic Cog, captained respectively by Dr.Spaceman and LieutenantHindenberg. The Squid-Goldfish team put on a stunning show, blasting their way through the competition to emerge undefeated!

Following a first-round defeat by Homebrew and Fail-Midion at 5-2, they powered all the way through the loser’s bracket to face Saint Rocket and the Ergonomic Cog in the final round, and fought a close battle to land in second with a score of 5-3.

With an impressive flawless victory against Calamari and Negotiator in the first round and a default win in the second, Durandal and Red Herring defeated Serenity and Kraken 5-2 in the third round. They put up a good showing against Saint Rocket and the Ergonomic Cog, losing 5-3, before finally going up against Baron’s Pride and The Qwerty in a sudden-death elimination round that sent Baron’s Pride and the Qwerty to the finals and earned Durandal and Red Herring a hard-fought third-place finish.

Spectator Mode & Controls

An early version of spectator mode was pushed into the client today. Controls are not hooked up for customization yet, but are as follows:

W, S: Move camera forward and backward.
A, D: Strafe camera left and right.
R, F: Move camera up and down.
Z, X: Adjust camera movement speed.
Mouse: Change angle of view.
Right Mouse Button + Mouse X movement: Z-Axis shift.

We’ve already built functionality for tracking / orbiting ships, but it didn’t quite make the build. Look for it in a build sometime next week.

Enjoy the tournament!

Patching the Patch!

Oops, we missed a spot…

A small patch is being deployed to fix two important issues:
– Restored the “return to lobby” button to the end-of-match scoreboard screen
– Prevent matchmaking from dropping crewmembers into (private, password-protected) custom games.

This will unfortunately require a server reboot, sorry for the inconvenience.

Tiny Patch

The beta v0.12 patch is out! A new client build is also available from Steam.

Update 11:37AM EST: The build is live!

This is a small patch in preparation for the tournament tomorrow.

Patch notes:
– Added spectator support (with free-fly camera controls) to custom games.
– Tuned some server settings to hopefully reduce unexpected disconnects
– Added additional logging to help track down unexpected disconnects
– Tuned water rendering parameters, looks much better now
– Disappearing helm bug should be fixed once and for all!

New Build is Live!

And here are the release notes:

Features:
– Friend List! You can now add and remove players to a friendlist by clicking their name in the lobby chat
Stat screen is in.
– Stats: You can now see per class stats for yourself.
– Test Store: In testing stage, and allows costume previews of player assets that are coming soon.

Bugfixes:
– Snapping off components on equipment switch is fixed.
– Player characters now remain where they were when mounting a component, and on exit return to that position.
– Audio stutter caused by inactive sources is fixed
– Performance issues related to terrain are fixed, namely spyglass lag, and frame stutter.
– Particles on screen optimized, more performance boost
– Equipment no longer displays after zooming while on helm
– Ship stats (except hull and balloon profile) now display correctly
– Shell tracer originating position more accurate

Balance:
– Gun positioning bug fixed. Projectile leading is more predictable
– Missile sling no more homing, and turning speed reduced
– Harpoon range increased
– Various gun angle and turning speed adjustments

Known Bugs:
– Invisible-Helm is still at large, please send client logs to feedback@musegames.com
