The Lounge / Re: That Moment When...
« on: May 30, 2013, 03:53:10 pm »
That moment where you're doing your job great yet your entire team decides they have better things to do and log off without you knowing, then all you see is three AI staring at you like 'Hello friend' leaving you with 0.5 secs to steer away from a massive hill....

Gameplay / Re: Firing mechanism and damage explanation
« on: May 30, 2013, 03:24:41 pm »
Could some one from Muse explain how the physics of the harpoon rope work?
What causes it to detach?
How is force applied to the harpooning and the harpooned ship?
What airship properties (drag, mass, impact location) effect the harpoon physics?
Is there a timer between when the harpoon strikes and when the rope goes "tight"?
Is the thrust of your engines lessened while harpooned?

There seem to be a lot of variables in play for this mechanic and I am not sure how they all work together.

This is complicated question but here is the tl;dr version:

  • A harpoon will detach automatically at 120 seconds
  • Max length is 600m before breaking
  • The harpoon will apply a constant pulling force (right when harpoon makes contact with hull) from the ship that fired the harpoon to the point where the harpoon is attached.  Movement and overall affect is similar to if the two ship bodies are afloat in water (air is also a liquid) but of course with the additional Y-axis movement.  It responds 100% accurately to how force would affect these bodies in liquid based on the two points of attachment as well as the drag profile of each body
  • Engine force output is not affected

With that said... it's extremely difficult to predict the movement on your own.  It also takes into account engine movement and will further augment the outcome of these effects, making them even harder to predict.  We're looking into simplifying this system to make it less real and more gamey.  Easier to predict and actually do something that you'd like it to e.g. maintain range instead of pulling all of the time (because that's not always helpful).

However, I've heard that from the recent pull force reduction that harpoons are useful in some situations.  Although this is a small subset of the player set that can actually use them effectively.

Nothing is set in stone right now.  It's a decently sized feature request.

how about when on the weapon if you hold 'S' it pulls? that way the captain can tell the crew member Exactly when he wants it to pull.

Gameplay / Harpoon Cables.
« on: May 30, 2013, 03:15:58 pm »
i've noticed that these cable will go through ANYTHING, i'm talking ships to rubble to massive mountains.

i was wondering if maybe these cable could have a physical presence in the game, such as harpooning a poor little squid then flying round some rubble causing the squid to hit said rubble.

in my eyes it would make the harpoon such a more valuable tool

thoughts?

Gameplay / Re: Any good loadouts BESIDES Gat/flak?
« on: May 30, 2013, 03:03:59 pm »
I really like the gat/mortar... or the merc/art if you wanna go long range...and if Bubbles is to be believed, a dual poon ramming pyra is pretty effective... also there is the carronade rocket carosel... oh the choices :P though the gat/flak is one of the easiest builds to run with

*edit* the reason why the gat/flak is so good right now, is the fact that it combines piercing and explosive ammo types to give you the max killing power... most of my suggestions also follow this theory (except for bubbles' build)...

my team usually run the junker, Gats on bottom with mortars on top, and front is arturion. it works well.

what about this as a possiblity?

trading tech? being able to add something to a weapon like an enhanced zoom, but obviously have a downside as in maybe you have an extra setting on zoom yet you fire 20% slower etc.?

i'm just spit balling here, you could get a carronade but with a longer barrel to make it reach just a little further away yet its spread is less.

that way its not just about what the gunner is equiping for the gun, but if the guns got certain attachments the gunner may want to rethink his load-out :)

less than 48 hours played:

level 4 engi
level 4 gunner
level 3 pilot

more wins than losses

almost instantly got a grasp of the game with My captain.. Captain Kuro.  (we are Sky vikings... not pirates) ((because we are THAT awesome))

all my chars look amazing.

and because i'm so awesome i've put myself on the bounty list to see if anyone can take me... special bonus if you beat me with Captain kuro as pilot and 'Dat Aft' as a gunner :P

lol only 48.

Casual

i beg your pardon but thats what steam says... granted about half of that is when i've left the game on and done other things.. so its probably A LOT less xD

I work in a school as behavioural and classroom support but mainly I am a Psychological Science Honours student working on my thesis to finish my degree.

do you have to go through the whole CBT? i'm an engineer and its really not my true calling, i've always wanted to help people. what are your experiences? any advice etc.?

I think what we all need to think about is that we can't buff the flame too much. While we may be unhappy about what its putting out we should only expect a slight bump otherwise the flamer will overtake everything and the meta will be double flames.

I'm not sure if what I'm saying is right but that's what I'm understanding from this

I don't think "Losing Is Fun!" would go over well as your company slogan.

I got a degree in Aeronautical Engineering--right now I'm a pilot for the US Air Force.  The AE degree was just ahead of a music degree, for those of you who have seen my thread with Mr. Gong.
what aircraft do you pilot. I wish I was an engineer in the us instead of here. Things are so political and delecate here :/
