General Discussion / Re: PAX Alliance Streamed Content
« on: August 30, 2015, 01:52:22 pm »
Also with Friday's stream we were able to see, more or less, what every faction's fleet looks like save for a few boss ships and that the last and only public image of the yeshan fleet was an untextured WIP. So any thoughts on how the factions look? Has anyone thought of switching sides now based on the kind of ships/weapon they could potentially be unlocking? Personally in the earlier days after the kickstarter I had thought I'd be more of a Guild man but looking at the Baronies fleet and the Crusader I maybe switching my initial allegiances. Angleans are pretty neat too.

Does the crusader at least have good acceleration? It seems fast-ish and I'm sorta getting the impression of it being a heavy pyramidion

Gameplay / Re: Flyable Icarus

*dusts off tin foil hat*
Gabriel and the Icarus went down, sure, but Gabriel survived and either killed any pirates who got too curious about the Icarus for their own good or scoured the desert to search through the remains of the pirate ships that he personally littered the ground. Once he had gathered enough working parts he rebuilds what he can of the Icarus with mere scrap and a wrench as he was said to often have done and spends the rest of his life co-opting every brigand and mercenary he can into his guild of treasure hunters to further search through the Burrens for pre war technologies. Technologies that have been carefully distributed between the 6 rising factions in the decades after his initial flight so that his shadow guild could control the progress of the new age of airships and play the various sides of the conflict of course compromising certain moralities he may have once had and calling his legacy into question.  The Icarus has since been improved upon and possess boss ship abilities that make it impossible to destroy. You can only merely survive it. (Like the Stalker from warframe.) But who mans the helm of the fabled and feared Icarus? an aged Gabriel with a great big bushy beard or perhaps a son (ohhhh or a daughter; what a twist)

tl:dr Gabey lives and went crazy building a rouge nation of advanced badass ships and is a secret boss/side quest story line dealy

I will push this theory super hard.

Fly low enough and you can actually go under most of the dust storm as it rolls in through dunes. If I have to I use it as cover when I need to get across the middle of the map unseen

I'd certainly hope though that the Icarus gets a bit of a make over while still maintaining its overall original look. Extra armor on the balloon and hull as well as a more streamlined body would keep it from looking too dated.

World / Blackcliff Ship Name/Faction
« on: July 03, 2015, 10:15:45 pm »
So because I have an unhealthy infatuation with what was once the "raid on the refinery mystery ship" which is also still visible in the new 2v2 map, Blackcliff, I would like to speculate a bit on the ship's in world purpose, faction affiliation, and a fitting name for fun. Older images of the ship can be viewed here http://imgur.com/a/vMZfy

Assuming that the map Blackcliff exists in the same location as the Blackcliff on the GoI Co-op Mode map
( http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140314035859/gunsoficarusonline/images/2/27/Guns_of_Icarus_Map.jpg ) we can assume that it is a major town in the  Fjord Baronies territory near the Chaladon border. In spite of this though I'd like to theory craft that this ship, while seen in Baronies lands is not a part of the Baronies faction or at least not its military. This is because its design does not share some of the very common characteristics we've seen so far in the Baronies' faction ships. From the Faction A.I. ships as well as the previewed faction player ship, to the Spire that has a history as a former Baronies sentry we can see that the Baronies military has a thing for implementing shields or some kind of "cow catcher" to the front of their airships.

The blackcliff ship (blackcraft?) is perhaps instead less of a military ship for the Baronies and more of a privately owned cargo ship for the Blackcliff refinery. Larger balloons meant for bearing heavier loads, a single large howitzer type weapon on the front for self-defense rather then aggressive action, and a simple cost effective design could imply that this airship was designed with freight in mind. Some old name suggestions included the narwhal because of its pointy bits. Maybe a Marlin or Sailfish would also be good suggestions in-keeping with the marine animal naming theme.

To my knowledge the inclusion of this ship in the Raid on the Refinery map was mostly due in part to the convenience of reusing old assets. The first time this ship was seen was in the GoIO trailer which can be viewed here at the 11 second mark. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ewpn5xMY3Hc
The ship was too large and/or didn't function well in the PvP setting of the time so it went unused until it became a fancy background decoration. So having said that this is all of course speculation that probably has no connection with the developers intent and is really just for some fun. Any thoughts?

All credit that needs to be due to the fine folks of the former thread to first identify the mystery ship here

P.S.(Muse please bring this ship into Co-op)

If we are to see the Icarus return to the skies I'd suspect it'd be in the upcoming Co-op mode as a faction less boss ship before anything else. Muse I think did say they played with the idea of having a game mode involving a ship with a larger then 4 man crew. Maybe that'd be a mode to have such a large ship like the Icarus in.

Hydrogen also isn't hard to manufacture either

Gameplay / Re: Airship advice

The broadest advice I could give is that some of the biggest advantages those three ships (squid, spire, mobula) have over the rest are superior vertical mobility and can take advantage of a dimension of movement that the others can't. Buff your balloon and/or bring hydrogen and as soon as you see an engagement going badly (ie they have the jump on you, a crewman isn't in proper position, engines down) hit your reset button and shoot up into the air. As long as you have balloon health you have another chance to repair and re engage

Do your best to fly over or under to give engies most time to repair and you can do this best by juking. The squid and spires high acceleration help as you use kerosene to turn a retreat into a surprise charge as you rise over or duck under. Back to mobula you can juke by first sinking down and as soon as you see they're trying to match your altitude use your tools and stamina to rise up. They're momentum will delay their rise to keep up with you.

Flechette weapons suck but lumber jack works best at range so bob up and down to make it difficult and with carronades you should fly low. In general always fly low to start an engagement. You'll be surprised how often you'll go unnoticed but once you've identified who your attacking and from where(probably behind) then rise up in an ambush. Just keep in touch with your ally so they aren't caught out alone whilst your being sneaky

I feel like Raid on the Refinery would be big enough for a 4v4 Deathmatch. I mean, its about the same size as Dunes right?

Gameplay / Re: How is a galleon suppose to deal with spin cannon?
« on: May 28, 2015, 09:04:53 pm »
It's a pretty easy gun to out range after the last patch but for sure broadside ships like the galleon and junker feel the spin more then most ships as the spin increases when shots connect further away from a ships center of gravity. Not only does kerosene and moonshine reduce spin but charging with those tools should force them to hit your front rather then your sides resulting in even less spin. Galleon is a heavy ship and fast once it gets rolling so if you have to opening up with a ram isn't terrible. Just make sure you aren't leaving your ally behind to fight a 2v1 because you're getting frustrated

Gameplay / Re: The Flying Narwhal....alternate Pyra
« on: May 28, 2015, 02:13:16 pm »
Decided to doodle a possible build taking into account a rear firing heavy mount. Calling it, the Drillmidion:

As far as repair mounts go...dunno. The balloon would be similar to the pyra where it has armored slats around it. Just the weak spots would be on the sides, not the rear.

This layout actually seems pretty similar to the co-op player ship we got a sneak peak at. Just trade the pointy bit for a bladed cow catcher.

Or Gabriel survived the crash then proceeded to Liam Neeson his way across the desert killing the what few remnants of the pirate horde that came to investigate the crash with a heavy wrench and a detached turret. Later forming a shadow guild of treasure hunters who have been subtlety controlling the direction of airship development while keeping the best stuff for themselves. Stalking the skies with the rebuilt and improved icarus hunting anyone doing a little to well without the concent of his organization.

Dreams aside what is the actual lore of the final flight of the icarus? All I remember is officially gabe went south and the icarus was attacked by pirates and he was never heard from again. I don't think there's anymore beyond that

Could be like a historical museum deal, with older technology and aircraft on display
