"BOOP BOOP BOOP."

~ Dementio, ram killing both his allies and then Ightrril in one smooth motion with a Galleon on Desert Scrap.

That makes me remember another quote by Dementio:

GALLEON BUFFED MOONSHINE RAM OP!!!

Good evening to you too, my friend.
No, I don't mind. Please, have a seat. Can I offer you a glass of wine? No? Very well.
So what was makes you disturb that reading chap in the corner of the tavern? You don't seem like a captain looking for a crew and I know I don't seem like a jack looking for work, so was it the nobleman's garb or the book on cellular physiology? I do admit that neither of them is a very common sight down here.
Just want to know my story? That's fine, curiosity never killed anyone. Well, it actually has killed quite a few but that's beside the point. It's actually pretty much what brought me here, you see? “The pursuit of knowledge.” Has quite the ring to it when you say it that way, doesn't it?

I come from an old noble family in the Fjord Baronies. Don't bother asking for the name, you wouldn't know it. There are so many houses, every peasant in the Baronies can find some noble blood somewhere in his ancestry.
My house was one of the unlucky ones. One of those that used to be great and powerful  but made a few bad choices along the way. Nowadays all my family does is swagger through a crumbling castle, pretending that they're still as big as they used to be. Clinging to a dream world and trying to polish a facade that didn't fool any one.
I know I shouldn't complain. Life as a baron comes with a lot of amenities. I had a personal tutor, a fencing master, I even went to the College of Physiology at Ravenrook, but what use is it if you freeze to death because you can't afford the petroleum to keep the heaters running in winter?
I wish I could say that I tried to change things, I wish I'd tried to restore my family's former glory but I didn't. It's a great feeling, being part of a bloodline that stretches back until before the Great War, you know? And that history is all my house has left. If I had admitted that those centuries of adhering to tradition had ruined our house, I would have thrown all that away. So I ran with it.
My brother would inherit the lands and titles and I was to become a physician. I'm fairly glad that I was born second. Don't like politics, never did. Prefer to keep to myself.

Funny thing to say, right? A physician who doesn't like people, that's not a very reassuring thought, is it?
Don't get me wrong, medicine is a fascinating subject. I'm still reading books on it, as you can see. Again, it's the people who are the problem. Most of those doctors see their profession as an art form rather than a field of science. It's all just about making a diagnosis and administering the right cure. Nobody seems to care why an inflammation of the liver makes your skin turn yellow or why newts can regrow their limbs but humans can't. There is no curiosity involved what so ever, and when you try to find out yourself they expulse you.
Don't look at me like that! Nobody got injured. Well, depends on how you define “injured”.

So that's essentially why I left the Baronies. For the pursuit of knowledge. I try to find people who know more than I do and listen to what they have to say. And when I do my own research I don't have to wait for authorisation from some fusty committee.
I quit the university... three years ago? Feels like so much longer. You say I look older? Yes, I hear that a lot.
I'm no doctor, gods no. Don't actually want to be associated with that bunch, but I'm probably the closest you'll find in this city.

I get by rather well by patching up overly enthusiastic powder monkeys or riggers who fell from the ropes. And when nobody needs patching up, I patch up the ship.
I have by no means the same knowledge of engines as a trained mechanic or a shipwright, but a basic understanding of physics can get you quite far. You'd be surprised how many technicians I had to tell not to work on electrical devices with metal tools while the current is switched on- You know not to do that, right? Please tell me you do.

You really look like you could use a drink. Go ahead and try the wine. I can't understand the craze about that moonshine you lot keep drinking all the time. All it's good for is sanitising wounds and studying the mechanisms of blindness.
That's pretty much all there is to say about me. You look like quite the character yourself, so what's your story?

This is a great thread, and I finally had a reason to elaborate my character.

You haven't played GOI until you've asked someone who Daniel is. It is so wonderful every time it happens.

Guides / Re: Being the mortar gunner aboard a metamidion
« on: June 06, 2014, 11:09:28 am »
For everybody that uses the gat mortar combo I have a secret to tell you. Burst ammo does more damage than greased in the mortar!

True, greased ammo reduces damage by 20% and also reduces projectile speed by 20%. On the other hand, it takes almost twice as long to empty a clip with burst rounds (8.4 seconds for Burst vs 4.6 seconds for greased)

Burst ammo damage per clip is 1764
Greased ammo damage per clip is 1411

If we include reload time and time needed to empty the clip, we get the following DPS:
Burst: 210
Greased: 316
Of course, the reload time shouldn't play a role as the enemy ship is probably going to be destroyed after one volley

Hull health of all ships for reference:
Galleon: 1400
Goldfish: 1100
Junker: 400
Mobula: 700
Pyramidion: 700
Spire: 750
Squid: 850

What plays a role however is the time it takes to rebuild the armor again, and that's where the burst rounds have a disadvantage.
These are the spanner hits it takes to rebuild the armor on the different ships according to Mattilald Anguisad's rebuilding reference:

Pyra Armor: 9 Buffed Armor: 10
Galleon Armor: 10 Buffed Armor: 12
Junker Armor: 9 Buffed Armor: 11
Squid Armor: 4 Buffed Armor: 5
Goldfish Armor: 6 Buffed Armor: 7
Mobula Armor: 8 Buffed Armor: 10
Spire Armor: 6 Buffed Armor: 7

I think one spanner hit takes one second (not sure though), that means that theoretically the armor of the Squid, Goldfish, Mobula and Spire could be rebuilt before a burst mortar clip could be fully emptied.

Still, I am not entirely sure whether greased or burst are in fact better. Greased has an upper hand in fast, close-range engagements I'd say, but it strongly reduces range and and accuracy due to the slower projectile speed.

Also, for anybody who didn't know, all of the engines are named for Muse employees.
Really? Now that's an interesting easter egg right there ;) I'll keep a closer look on them from now on. The AI that is.

we would be able to buy new engines for our ships... (which propably isnt going to happen)

Interesting idea! It would be nice to have more than just cosmetical options for ship modification. Probably poses a problem with balance though. I guess it could be possible in Coop mode where you're only fighting AI...

Probably with the next update, I'd say. But we shall see when that comes.

When Jean-Jacques Fiz d'Eau first presented his new invention, riggers and ship's carpenters all across the known world drank to his health and thanked whatever gods they prayed to for their kindness.
Fiz D'Eau's Roll-Tacker was a tool that allowed sailors to quickly join together large sheets of cloth, a process that up to this point was done by hand and with needle and yarn. Crewmen would often be busy for days after a battle, simply trying to put the envelope of the balloon back together. The Roll-Tacker shortened this time down to a matter of a few hours. Urgent repairs could now even be undertaken in the heat of battle.

The fantastic device actually looks quite gruesome. A large, curved magazine feeds small tacks onto a rotating, vertical wheel. The engineer using it holds the two grips of the tacker and pushes the wheel along the seam of the fabrics that are to be connected. The tacks are punched into the cloth via a spring-powered mechanism and a supporting awl curves the pins once inside to secure their position.
The only power needed for the contraption to work is provided by a spiraled spring which has to be rewound every two minutes, but savvy mechanics quickly modified the tacker to run on steam, petroleum or voltaic current. The resulting machine could easily work five times as fast as the original, but devices "improved" by less gifted mechanics could just as easily stud the utilising swabbie with dozens of curved nails in a matter of seconds.

I hope most captains would just kindly pick up that shortwave radio.

Seriously though, I think that'd be the most plausible tool. Shortwave radios were developed in the late 1910s and hobbyists were using them shortly after. They might be a bit bulky, but if WWI never ended in the Goio universe and people managed to build things like the Leviathan on Desert Scrap, they should be able to install a radio transmitter on an airship.

You'd need encrypted frequencies though to hide your comms from enemy ships, but that opens so many more possibilities for content!

World / Re: Real Ship Names

From what I see:

Yesha Empire: Goldfish and the Galleon, if you look at their designs, they are very much East Asian style influenced which Yesha is.

Fjord Baronies: Mobula, has that royal feel to it with the glass and the unique fencing and trim. I would also say the Pyramideon for the baronies because it looks very much like a mass producible ship, something you would see in a fleet.

Chaladon and Mercantile Guild: Spire, mainly by it's look to be put together in all the right places and also a bit of flare to it, someone spent ACTUAL money to build this and not rigged it up.

Arashi League and the Anglean Empire: I would have to say the squid, mainly because these are two cultures that do rely on a bit of raiding to survive. A quick, maneuverable ship can take down any size ship and makes for hit and run tactics. The Junker, as well, because it looks like something rigged up with pieces of other ships, something the Arashi League and the Anglean raiders are known for.

Quite a lot about the origin of the ships can be found in Evadne's Reports. For every ship except the Goldfish you can find out where it originally came from.
However you have to remember that this only means where the design emerged. Now they can be found almost everywhere. It tells us a lot about the art style and mentality of the different factions though.

Junker - based on Arashi Blueprint
Squid - Chaladonian design
Galleon - Yesha Empire
Spire - design from the Baronies which in the beginning were simply floating watchtowers guarding the mountain passes leading into the Baronies
Pyramidion - modified Yeshan warship
Mobula - designed in the Vastness for a rich Merchant, ie Mercantile guild

There is quite a bit more back story in those reports, so get on those achievements to unlock them, gentlemen!

You might have noticed that the engines on each ship are built by a different company.
When one is destroyed, in the damage log it doesn't say "X destroyed engine" but rather "X destroyed Chung's Choice engine."

So, I was just trying to look up which ship has which kind of engine, but I couldn't find it anywhere. Any help?

I can remember three from the top of my head, but I'm not entirely sure about those either
-  Chung's choice (Galleon?)
- Lil' Deb (Squid?)
- Bengston industries

General Discussion / gun runner theme
« on: May 02, 2014, 07:23:14 pm »
Hey there,

this wednesday was the first time I played GoI since the patch and in the store I saw a fourth ship theme (besides traveller, industrial and royal) called gun runner. Now it's not in the store any more and I can't find any other information about it. Does anyone know anything about it? Was it a special of some kind or was it only in the store by accident?
According to the description it was some kind of weapons smuggler theme and looked pretty neat!

The White Glint was the name of the flagship of the notorious Anglean captain Clint "Golden Glint" Herring. He got this nickname from the set of shiny gold teeth in his upper jaw. (He lost his original teeth in a terrible fishing accident)
His ship was a very fast and agile one, equipped with six extremely powerful and yet quiet engines. To this day it is not clear where he acquired them. He had the entire vessel painted white from prow to stern and every metal piece dulled or covered with bleached linen, so it would not reflect the sunlight.
Captain Herring used his unique ship to sneak up on unsuspecting ships travelling the foggy skies anywhere between the Chill Sea and the Black Channel.
His immense success was aided by a misconception. Every sailor travelling north knew the story of Golden Glint and White Glint, yet few had ever seen them and lived to tell the tale. Therefore, everybody expected the pirate ship to look like a white, silvery glint among the clouds. They all always realised too late that the ship was simply named after its narcissistic captain.
