Tournament Rules

The Unbirthday Tournament is an annual event hosted and run by the Cake Clan. We encourage players of all skill level to participate in our weekly matches!

Link to tournament steam group (required to join by team captains): http://steamcommunity.com/groups/CakeUnbirthday#events/

Tournament Structure and Schedule
The Unbirthday Tournament is Round Robin style structure with single ship sign up that will be scored as their own team (1 Ship = 4 Players = 1 Team). These teams will compete in weekly game modes where points will be rewarded and tracked through the duration of the season. The tournament will begin Sat. July 16th at 7:00PM UTC (3:00PM EST), and will run for 5 consecutive weeks every Saturday at the same time.

Each week, the gamemode of the tournament will change. The rules of each week's game mode will be announced in its respective weekly sign up post  in the form of a listed rule set as well as an instructional video/trailer. (see sign ups for information on weekly sign ups). All other information players are required to know will be posted in this thread as well including that week's point system.

Every match in the tournament will be scheduled on Challonge, an online bracket website. A link to the brackets will be provided before the event on the weekly sign up forum post, and in the Tournament Steam Group. All matches will be recorded as well, and VODs will be posted to a Youtube channel linked on the weekly sign up page.

Signing Up

Sign Ups for the tournament will be on a weekly basis and open the Monday before that respective week’s tournament. The sign ups will be posted in the Guns Of Icarus Community Forum under “Community Events” and will be titled “Unbirthday Tournament Sign Ups Week #___”. A format for the sign ups will be posted in those threads. Though points do transition week to week, a team is free not to for a particular week but will receive no points for the week. Teams must be signed up at least 12 hours in advance to participate. Late sign ups must speak with tournament management to ensure proper scheduling.

Upon initial sign up, teams must mention which division they wish to enter and be scored with (see divisions for details on each division). These divisions are adventurer and veteran and will be used to score players in the overall results. A team may change divisions if the meet the criteria held for each, but MUST speak to a tournament organizer (not a referee) at least 24hrs prior to the start of the first match.

Teams may also volunteer to be “mercenaries” for the tournament. In addition to participating in the tournament as a normal team, a mercenary may be called to fill a vacant ship spot in the case of team drop-out or tournament schedule conflicts. When playing as a mercenary, the team will not receive any candles and will not affect their overall score and will not affect the candles awarded each match.

Sign up Format:
Team Name:
Team Captain:
Crew 1:
Crew 2:
Crew 3:
Division:
Mercenary (Y/N):
Logo (optional):

The team Captain of each team is required to join the steam group designated for the tournament (see Steam Group for details).

Divisions

Throughout the tournament there will be two divisions used in scoring: Adventurer and Veteran. Adventurer division is available to a ship consisting of all crew level 30 and below in their highest level, veteran is open to all players though is encouraged to be a more experienced division. On the first sign up, teams must list what division they wish to enter. Should a team wish to enter under adventurer division, but do not meet the criteria of all crew level 30 and below, the team captain MUST speak with tournament organizers.

Divisions will be used only in the recording of overall tournament score. Adventurer and Veteran division ships will still in matches together either as allies or enemies, and will be taken into consideration for match making game formations. At the conclusion of each week, score will be posted of candles earned and divisions will be scored only amongst themselves. Winners of each division will receive reward for their victory. Division does not affect the value of the prize won.

(See Rule 13 about alternate accounts)

NOTE: Tournament organizers maintain the right to change a team's division based upon performance. Prior notification to the team will be made.

Points scoring

The tournament will be scored according to two point systems: points and candles. Points are awarded in each individual game based upon the rules set for the weekly gamemode and will include actions such as ship kills, point defense, and similar in game activities. At the conclusion of the match, Candles are awarded and are proportional to a 1st, 2nd, 3rd ranking based upon points scored in the match. For example the team that scored the most points will receive 6 candles, while the team with the second most receives 5, and so on until the last place team receives 1. Candles are recorded week by week and will decide overall division score and rank. Winners of the tournament are the teams of their respective division with the most candles earned over 5 weeks.

Tournament Steam Group

In addition to requiring teams to sign up each week, all ships must list a point of contact (does not have to be who posted the sign up). This point of contact must join an open steam group that is titled “Cake Unbirthday Tournament” Link is provided here: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/CakeUnbirthday#events/ . This steam group will be how game referees contact participants. Once a lobby has been opened, an announcement will be made in the group alerting players when they may join. The format of these announcements will be similar to “Match number # is now open, please join (referee in game name)” where match number will be given on the schedule posted before the event. Teams will also be given an “on deck” notification in this message alerting them of which match they can expect to open next. Only teams listed in the corresponding match on the schedule should join, and passwords should not be shared with players who have not signed up.

Contacting Tournament Management

For questions about the tournament, players are free to contact tournament managers in any of the following ways:
    Steam Group:
        [Cake] Admiral Obvious
        [Cake] Kajros
Any moderator of the Unbirthday Steam Group
    Email
        TheObviousShowTwitch@gmail.com

For all division change requests, drop outs, and concerns with the tournament please speak to tournament organizers, NOT A REFEREE. Tournament organizers include Cake Clan Officers and designated organizers.

The Gallery / I made a blog-thing!
« on: May 01, 2016, 02:07:17 pm »
Hey there everyone,

My final project in my Future of Writing class is to spend 2000 words blogging about something we consider ourselves an expert in, so naturally I've begun writing about Guns of Icarus.

It's a work in progress, but you can find it over here, feel free to let me know what you think, either in this thread or in the comments over there.

Hope you all enjoy!

Hello everyone.
I've been part of this game for many years now, but today I saw something that made me consider leaving.

I really expected more from Muse, and I must say, I am extremely dissapointed in the company; Muse has always been very accepting of people from all different creeds, walks of life, and belief systems, and has promoted one of the most enjoyable environments to be around.

But this.
This may be the end of all of that.

"Incendiary rounds:

Everyone hates fire. Take these and ruin somebody's day."

I'm requesting an immediate change, otherwise I'll take my developers, mods, CAs, and large player collection under Cake and go play TF2, where fire is encouraged and supported.

You have until Friday, Muse.

The Pit / Top Ten Symptoms of Guns of Icarus Withdrawl
« on: July 17, 2015, 07:18:13 am »
So, 6 weeks without Guns, and another one to go, I think I can present you all with this:

Top Ten Symptoms of Guns of Icarus Withdrawl.

1) Looking at clouds suspiciously.

2) Being shocked when you fall off something, fade to black, and wake up in a hospital instead of back where you started.

3) Reports from others of tossing in your sleep mumbling "gat mortar. Gat mortar. Gat mortar."

4) Twitching your PPT finger when you want somebody's attention.

5) Wondering how to get the vehicle you're driving to ascend

6) Wonderment at the relatively lacking lifting powers of balloons.

7) Wonderment at the relatively lacking ability to repair popped balloons

8 ) Your total and utter calm when dealing with fire, but watching people question you as you only spray the extinguisher once every few seconds.

9) Their further confusion as you scold them all for not "chemming correctly."

10) Random shouting of "MAN THE AFT GUNS!"

If you experience 5 or more of these symptoms, contact your Muse professional or representative as soon as you can.

Thank you, and enjoy the skies you lucky swabbies.

Community Events / Cake's Unbirthday Tournament! Week 3!
« on: February 02, 2015, 09:42:12 pm »

“Mad Hatter: Now statistics prove that you have one birthday.

March Hare: Imagine, just one birthday every year.

Mad Hatter: Ahhh, but there are 364 unbirthdays!

March Hare: Precisely why we're gathered here to cheer!

Alice: Why, then today is my unbirthday too!”

-Disney’s 1951 Rendition of Alice in Wonderland

And we're back for week 3 of Unbirthdays!
Points are taking a little longer this time around, but rest assured, they will be here shortly. Apologies to the teams of week 2.

Also: I'd like to reiterate, WE ARE STILL ACCEPTING NEW TEAMS!
That's right, even if you didn't fly in week 1 or 2, you can still sign up and join the shenanigans!

Purpose:
This is going to be a simple point gathering tournament, but with a few twists (as all good tournaments have):

Firstly, sign-ups are NON-exclusive and PER SHIP. This means that all you have to do to meet the requirements is get 3 friends who can compete with you!

Secondly, this will be a deathmatch-only tournament will have a 2 digit point system based on kills and wins. However, various multipliers (both above and below 1x) for builds and ships will be applied. Precise score multiplier values will be posted later. (Hint: Think ‘Cake,’ that is, minimum meta, maximum fire)

We are purposefully posting this announcement quite late. This is to give new players a chance to participate and stand a fighting chance. This is an extremely casual tournament, and we want to maximize the fun had by all. Seriously. Even the big clans. Go grab 3 buddies and sign up below! Don't even ask permission from your leader. Sign up for this stuff!

Dates:

This takes over 4 Saturdays starting on the 24th of January, 8pm UTC. You do not have to attend all 4 Saturdays.

Sign-ups:
All you need to do below is post a point of contact (in form of Steam profile), your 3 crew members you plan to bring along, and your team name. [NOTE: Your ship name MUST be the same as your team name. This is for scoring purposes.] We have open sign-ups up to a few hours before the event (Saturday, 12:00 GMT). You have to sign up every week you want to play, and signing up for one week does not make you signed up for each week after.

Pre-Lobby:
Because it’s a point gathering tournament, we will be seeding randomly week 1, and then seeding based on points after that.

In lobby:
We will be ‘draft picking.’ This is having one blue ship ready up and lock its loadout, having both red ships ready up and lock their loadouts, and then finally having the last blue ship ready up and lock its loadout.

Point maths inbound!

All math will be done by Cake. The basic concept is to try to go for the large addition multipliers while staying away from the large subtraction multipliers. Weigh your risk vs. reward and good luck!

Each Kill is worth 100 points.  If more than one multiplier applies, your base score (100 points) will be the number that is multiplied. For example, if you bring hades/flak/flamer front, mines outside Mobula, and kill a target with the flamethrower hitting it, you will get 100 + (100*.5) -(100*.25) = 125 points for that kill

Addition multipliers:
Kill with flamethrower hitting target:                 +0.5x points
Kill where last damage source came from mine: +0.5x points
Kill where last damage was CLEARLY a flare:      +2.0x points
Kill is “stolen” from you:                                 +50 points

Subtraction multipliers:
Gat/Mortar appears with overlapping arcs:                      -.5x points
Hades/Flak appears with overlapping arcs:                     -.25x points
No fire weapon involved in kill:                                     -.5x points

Each win is worth 300 points, and each loss is worth 100 points. If more than one multiplier applies, your base score (300/100) will be the number that is multiplied.
For example, if you win with an all-banshee squid, you will get 300 + (300*.1) + (300*.5) = 480 points plus your points per kill for that match.

Addition multipliers:
Ship composed of 100% fire weapons*:             +0.5x points
Gunner brings incendiary rounds:                      +0.1x points
ALL engineers bring incendiary rounds:               +0.2x points
No chem spray:                                              +1.0x points
Your fly a Spire:                                             +0.2x points
You fly a Squid:                                              +0.1x points
Birthday related items**:                                 +0.01x points per item

Subtraction multipliers:
Ship with no fire weapons/only fire weapon being a flaregun:-0.75x points
Ship with more fire weapons, but rarely used in combat:      -0.75x points
Pyramidion:                                                                   -.2x points
Blenderfish:                                                                   -.1x points

*Fire weapons are flamethrowers, banshees, hades, flare guns, and mine launchers. Regular weapons with incendiary rounds are NOT fire weapons.

**Birthday related items are the Birthday ship theme, party hat for 1 year anniversary, and party hat for 2 year anniversary.

Your total points for the day will be based on your points per kill added to your win/loss total.

Points will be carried over from week to week.

ALL MULTIPLIERS THAT ARE SUBJECTIVE (“stolen” kills, “rarely” used, etc.) are up to the referees and Cake as a whole.
Cake reserves the right to add/subtract points for good/bad behavior.

This event will be streamed at twitch.tv/theobviousshow!

The Gallery / Ode to Banshee.
« on: November 20, 2014, 05:21:36 pm »
I got bored, so I made a little sonnet declaring my love for the Banshee.
Granted, I'm no sonnet expert, and I don't know too much about iambic pentameter, so any feedback is much appreciated.

*ahem*

Upon my junker thou doth sit,
Grease rounds within your chambers lie.
And oh, the shots that we shall hit
The beaut’ful sound of rockets fly.
While one may seem but little threat,
Place two or more and engies roar
As long’s it land, thou art set
Hit the naked hull and thou shalt score
Opposed teams may use chem spray
And scoff at me with match’s start.
But cycles missed within the fray
Shall cause the fall of ship and heart
The battle’s won, and if I may,
Is today your birth and day?

Feedback and Suggestions / Another one of those 'gunner balance' threads.
« on: September 26, 2014, 07:58:39 am »
It's not exactly a secret that the gunner isn't quite up to par with the other two classes. You need a highly specialized build to not require a pilot, and oftentimes, triple engineer works just as well (sometimes better) than engie/engie/gunner.

What I am saying should be no huge surprise to anyone, and most of you at this point are probably wondering what suggestion could possibly be new.

Well, I've been fiddling around with this idea for a little bit now, bouncing it off of a few of my fellow Cakes, and even a few Dev buddies, and I think it's time to bring it to the general opinion of the Forum.

Gunner tools.

Not gunner ammo, gunner tools.

For probably about 85% of the guns in this game, one ammo type is enough to get the gun working at maximum efficacy. Every engineering job needs a MINIMUM of two tools (repair and fire suppression) but for maximum efficiency, they need 3 tools (rebuild, repair, and fire suppression). Pilots need as many tools as possible to out maneuver their opponents (with the possible exception of a sniper galleon).

Imagine how OP it would be if an engineer could take 4 tools.
Imagine the shift in gameplay if a pilot could bring an extra tool.
Giving a gunner a 4th ammo would change next to nothing.

That's because everything the gunner has to choose from is far too similar.

Every class has a large selection of tools to utalize with a few scattered specialized tools. The Buff Hammer and Spyglass come to mind.

If we gave the gunner a few tools to use off the gun, I believe that would encourage the necessity of more than one gunner tool, AKA, bringing gunners.

Let's take an example.
The most balanced thing I've been able to come up with is a "greace can." You apply the greace to the gun similar to how one uses a buff hammer, and it charges up a bar to the left (but make it blue), that once fills, it activates, allowing the gun to be turned faster. You could then use an ammo ON TOP of the greace. Engineers could only do one or the other, and a gunner would have an advantage over a gungineer.

Applied effects would be less drastic than gunner ammo, but would have no downsides.
Applied effects run out of time, just like a buff hammer effect.

Now. I open the floor to you, community.

Stupid idea?
Meh idea?
Game saving idea?

Let's see what you all think.

So we all know how to use tools like chute vent, hydrogen, Moonshine, and other pilot tools that damage components and have effects that last a few seconds after they are activated: 9 times out of 10, just flick it on real quick so you can get that dodge or sweet, sweet ram and then disselect it just a moment later and let the lasting effects do the job.

This gets troublesome for achievements that make me use lots of Chute Vent, as I have to farm them, as I *very* rarely actually have the tool selected for more than a second.
Sometimes less than a second, causing the achievement to seemingly not even count the time in-use.

Is there any way to make the achievement count the time the tool is active and damaging my balloon/engines even when not selected and add that to the achievement timer?

Thanks in advance,
Peace and Fire,

The Pit / The shortest autobiographies.

Simple concept: Describe your playstyle, your personality, and whatever else you can think about yourself in less than 10 words.

It can be in the form of a quote, a poem, a passive sentence, or really anything under 10 words, just try to embody you.

I'll start.

'Man the flamers, we're pulling in close!'

Feedback and Suggestions / Party Chat UI tweak.
« on: December 03, 2013, 09:20:07 pm »
This was brought up WAAAAYYYYY back when 3.1 first came out and we got our mitts on a shiny new party chat system, but it needs to be brought up again.

It's hard to discern between someone speaking in party chat and someone speaking in crew chat.

This often leads to hearing one side of a conversation as two members of the party on the same ship converse, one through crew, one through Party.

And sometimes it's just good to know how people are communicating to you.

The simple solution in-game is this: If someone is speaking to me over party, I don't need to know what class they are, replace the wheel/bullet/spanner with a little party hat.

And, hell, make it purple.

The problem sometimes persists in-lobby, and that solution is even simpler (unless there's some weird coding involved).

When someone uses 'x' to chat, have their little speaker appear next to their name in the lobby .

When someone uses 'z' to chat, have their little speaker appear next to their name in the party drop-down menu.

While, yes, I DO realize that you can just say 'party-party' or something of the sort before everything you say in party chat, that's a little unnatural and easy to forget.

At least for me.

DISCLAIMER TO THE MODS: I know topics just like this are out there deep in the history of the GoI forum, but they're too old for me to find.

The idea behind this thread is to make it as painful as possible for everyone else to read what you wrote.

We're in The Pit, so the gloves are off.

Do your worst.

(Unless your worst is anything explicitly banned in The Pit "rules." In that case, tone it back.)

I think I'm off to a good start, no?
