Community Events / Make the Cake: Battle of the Birthdays
« on: October 27, 2013, 07:00:16 pm »
The first Cake hosted event!
And just in time for the birthday festivities!

WATCH OUR AWESOME VIDEO HERE

Good, so you’ve gone and watched it? Now for some details...

Time:
  • Saturday 2nd of November at 9pm UTC (usual Cogs time)
(it would be amazing if you could be ready and in Crew Formation an hour early!)

How does it work?
  • A “Team” will be entered by the contact person and consist of 4 members crewing together on one ship.
  • Competing Clans can enter up to 3 “Teams.” Those ships will act as individual “Teams” and score points at a per-kill basis. (kill-stealing is encouraged)
  • Substitutes can be shared among clans, but as soon as you play for a “Team” you are locked to it, even if the other “Team” is from your clan.
  • Switching ships and load-outs during Lobby is allowed, but the “Team” has to stay together.

The Tiers of the Cake:

  • Bottom Tier : the Base Tournament
Ships will compete in 4 different matches to score points. Should more than 6 "Teams" sign up, the "Bottom Tier" matches will spread over 2 or more lobbies. "Teams" with the most points will advance to the "Middle Tier."
  • Middle Tier : the Finale
Participants will be the 4 (or 6) ships with the highest scores from the Bottom Tier. 3 matches will be played and after each match, 2 of the ships have to switch sides.
  • Top Tier : (in Kirk’s voice) “Ultimate Cake Topper!”
The ship with the most points at the end of the Middle Tier will gain the grand title.

Maps:
  • Any and all Deathmatch Maps are allowed.
  • The next map will be determined before your match and told to you by your referee.

Points:
  • 2 Points for winning a Match per “Team” with the winning color.
  • 1 Point additional for the “Team”-ship that made the kill.

Rules:
  • More than 50% fire weapons
  • All sides of a ship should have at least 1 fire weapon
  • No gunners allowed on Heavy Weapon ships. Heavy Weapons will be loaded with Incendiary Rounds and Heatsink only. (No vanilla rounds!)
  • Everyone is obligated to say “happy birthday” at the end of each match, or at the VERY least “gg HB!”
  • Ship changes, load-out changes, and any sudden replacements have to be announced by text or voice to your announcer and co-players. (It’s just polite)
  • Specific restrictions are applied to certain ships.

Classified as “Fire Weapons”:
  • Banshee Light Carousel
  • Dragon Tongue Light Flamer
  • Hades Light Cannon
  • Beacon Light Flare Gun
  • Phobos Light Mine Launcher

Sign up:
As previously stated, a clan may enter up to 3 “Teams”, but they require individual Clan-tags.
(P.S. It might end up on a Tier of our Cake-score board, so if your Clan-tag is short for something, write down the long version next to it.)
  • Introduction
  • Clan-tags and Crew
  • Steam profile of the contact person

Let me give you an example:

Quote
Hi, Kirk here from [Cake] to enter my “Teams”

Team 1 : [Swts] (short for Sweets)
James T. Kirk, Andika, Jacob Fii, and Piemanlives
Team 2 : [Cndy] (short for Candy)
Orangey, Hischi, Jon Ardenoth, and B’Elanna

My Steam profile link to contact me : http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198058401643/

But I don't have a Clan!
Well, this is your chance to find 3 friends and make one!
(But be sure to have substitutes in case one of you can't make it)
Other than that, we'd love to have you!
See? It's that easy!

I STILL HAVE QUESTIONS!
Please check up on our FAQs, we shall update them as much as we can!

Sign UP! And see you there!
Happy Birthday from the Cakes!

The Lounge / The GoIO Parody Song Thread
« on: October 24, 2013, 06:24:16 am »
Here's a place to let your creative juices flow.

Just take any song, switch a few of the words around to be Guns of Icarus themed, and post the results here.

Make it silly, make it awesome, make it both!

Only the chorus is really needed, but feel free to add as much or as little as you like!

Just be sure to name the original song so everyone knows how to sing your parody in their head.

I'll start:

To the tune of 'YMCA' by Village People

It's fun to ram things in
G-O-I-O!

I said it's fun to ram things in
G-O-I-O-ho!

I got my engie on hull!
I got my throttle on full!
I got my ally screa-min' 'no!'

The Pit / Forum issue.
« on: October 14, 2013, 02:50:27 pm »
Hey all.

As I'm sure you've all noticed, I just hit 100 salutes.

But, I'm not here to brag. I'm just wondering why access to the 100 salutes and up section of the forum hasn't been unlocked for me.

Could I get a mod to look into this for me?

Thanks,

-Kirk.

Feedback and Suggestions / UI tweak.
« on: October 06, 2013, 09:35:24 pm »
Too many times have I closed out looking at my crew's loadouts to accidentally double-click the button and leave the lobby.

Too many times has my carefully selected and tested crew been stolen from me by a level 2 pilot. (Let's put this big double explosive gun on the front of a Goldfish lololol)

Too many times have I eaten too much food at Outback Steakhouse!

Okay, that last one's on me, but can we get a little UI tweak?

Maybe move the 'Leave Lobby' button to the bottom center of the screen?

Please?

The Pit / What was that show called?
« on: September 27, 2013, 06:59:30 am »
Hey all,

My friend was telling me about this show he was watching.

It's some British show about this time-traveling guy who wears a bowtie.

It's fairly popular, so I figured I'd ask you guys.

I remember it was called Dr. ____.

Any ideas?

The pit's been pretty dead lately, we need to revive it.

If you could be a superhero, what color would your tights be?

The Docks / CakeWatch: On Patrol.
« on: September 08, 2013, 08:06:14 pm »
Hello there ladies and gentlemen! Pilots and Gunners! Engineers and buff hammer fanatics!

And especially hello to all you Pastries and Overwatch...ers...

*ahem*

Anyway, it is my proud honor to announce a close-knitted clan alliance between the honorable and inflammatory Cake Clan and the 'ever watchful' Overwatch!

Before I continue, I would like to make a clarification: This is not a Haven/BFS alliance. These two Clans will remain separate.

The purpose of this alliance announcement is more of a mass-memo to all the members of Cake and Overwatch.
Go ahead and add members of the other clan to your friends list as you would add members of your own clan.
Join their ships as you would join the ships of your own clan.
Joke around and have a good time as you would the members of your own clan.

But if you see them on the other side of the battlefield: Show no mercy.

And this is all just in Pubs.

As for the competitive scene: Cake will still be sticking to the fire and flames that we love, and Overwatch will continue to be the competitive threat that they have been, but each clan will be open to accept members from the other in that competition.

This leads to one of two outcomes for each tournament:

Overwatch is competing in a tournament that Cake is not. A member of Cake wants to play in said tournament. They can shoot either Mr. Ace Rimmer or Xyem a message (-Muse- Cullen or myself for Cake) and try to secure a slot.

-OR-

Both Clans are participating in a tournament. Some of the Overwatch guys want to screw around with fire weapons, and some of the Cake guys want to play a few rounds for serous. All either Clan would have to do would be to ask their respective leader to participate in the other Clan. The leaders will talk it over ("Hey, is it okay if I take X for this competition?")

As for the rest of you players out there, be on guard: CakeWatch is on patrol.

The Lounge / What did you name YOURSELF and why?
« on: September 06, 2013, 08:16:15 pm »
There are some pretty interesting names out there, and I'm curious as to where the came from.

If it's the same name you use for all your online stuff, don't just say that. Say why.

If it's a name from something, say where and why you picked it.

I'll start:

James T. Kirk. Like from Star Trek. Into Darkness reminded me of how much I loved the original series, and I happened to see the movie right before I bought the game, so Kirk seemed like the best option.

I wish I could say something about how I (personally) identify with Kirk, how I'm some unorthodox problem solver and great leader, but it all started as a joke.

I got three of my friends to join in, and James T. Kirk, M. Scotty, Mr. Spock, and checkov ran around the Enterprise for a few weeks.

Like the story always seems to go, they've all faded away, but for whatever reason, I've stayed.

The Pit / Crazy King. Is it really Crazy?
« on: August 19, 2013, 11:55:38 pm »
Hey all.

If anyone has flown alongside a low level Pilot, you may have noticed that they are often surprised that Crazy King progresses in a fairly organized manner. I'm not saying we should change the name, but we should change the name.

Well. Not really THAT close.

But this is what I just thought of when I saw this.

BOW BEFORE MY MS PAINT SKILLS.

The Pit / Did somebody say "fire"?
« on: August 15, 2013, 04:35:05 pm »
This is just a little post I'm making here for all us Pastries to squee about fire and other nonsense without cluttering up the rest of the forum.

Members and non-members alike, feel free to go nuts about fire, randomness, or fire.

Allow me to start.

Website and Forum Issues / Missing account-related things links.
« on: August 05, 2013, 07:16:43 pm »
Sorry for the confusing topic line; I couldn't think of a better way to word it.

Anyway, my problem is that I'm missing all account-related things on the forum. I'm missing my profile picture in the top left, I'm missing my personalized welcome, and I'm missing my "unread posts since last visit" and "new posts since last visit" links.

I know I'm logged in because
A) I logged out and back in again.

B) There are still "new" tags against things that I haven't read.

C) The link to "unread replies" that I have bookmarked still works as intended.

Mobile devices and other computers have the same problem.

The problem showed up about a week ago, I've been looking through options and account settings off and on, and have officially decided that I'm stumped.

Anyone know how to fix my little problem?

The Pit / "Both fickle dwarves jinx my pig" The mystery solved!
« on: August 02, 2013, 01:19:34 pm »
Ladies and gentlemen of the Guns of Icarus community, I present to you this thread.
https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,1752.0.html

Upon a quick skim, one can see that a user has found a glitch in the system revealing an interesting ship name placeholder.

Go ahead, go see what it is, I'll be here when you get back.

Mods, CAs, and users alike seem perplexed by the strange text.

Of course, Muse has always been creative with their placeholder names (As showcased by the PlayerHasAVeryLongName "account" many of us have seen in the Social tab), but this one seems extremely random and odd.

"Both fickle dwarves jinx my pig" appears to be Muse's attempt at a near-perfect pangram.

A pangram is a sentence containing every letter in the alphabet (The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog), and a perfect pangram is a sentence containing every letter AND is ONLY 26 letters long. Most of these are nonsensical (Squdgy fez, blank jimp crwth vox!)

Muse's pangram contains exactly 26 letters and contains almost every letter in the alphabet (Excluding Q, U, and Z, which are replaced by an extra E and two extra I's).

Adding the word "quiz" somewhere puts the letter-cap up to 30, but includes the missing letters with minimum extraneous letters.

Logically speaking, this could have been used as a test to make sure all the letters worked in the ship name slot without simply typing ABCD... etc. But in reality, I'm sure they just wanted a funny placeholder in the coding.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to request a name change to "Captain Sherlock Holmes"
