--The Wyvern--

The Wyrm stood on the lower deck watching over his gunners with a keen eye as they fire on the retreating ships.

Wyrm
"Keep firing men, we've got them in the bag."

But then the blue smoke erupted from the ships, obscuring them from vision and causing the Wyvern's gunners to aim roughly in the direction of the ships, often missing.

Wyrm
"Well I'll be damned, I guess we'll have to move closer.

Gallafell
"NO!"

Lord Gallafell appeared behind the Wyrm grasped his shoulder. Brushing Gallafell's hand away, the Wyrm glared at him with a stare that could melt metal.

Wyrm
"Ok."

He said rather softly, before going back to watching the gunners. Gallafell didn't exactly know what to think, so he trodded off back to the upper deck.

Tristan
"Very well done commander."

Tristan had walked over to Yiski's Lumberjack and was now examining the enemy fleet through his spyglass.

Tristan
"It appears they have retreated out of range. But the question remains, is it a retreat, or a tactical regrouping? Either way, should the time come for them to land their troops, I'll be ready, I assure you."

--Eastern wall--

The squids' assault had eased up on the wall and left the troops there with some time to breath, which Nidhogg and Tristan spent observing the battle taking place.

Nidhogg
"Holy Flak! Did you see that?"

Tristan
"What?"

Nidhogg
"Some madman with a Pyramidion just took out three other Pyramidions."

Tristan pulled out his spyglass and took a closer look.

Tristan
"Well, at least we have the more skilled captains on our side."

Nidhogg
"The most suicidal captains also, it seems."

Tristan
"Let us hope that is not our downfall. And we should at no cost ever underestimate the enemy. Remember, in chess, players often lead with the pawns."

Nidhogg
"Or the knights."

Tristan
"Don't get technical."

--Eastern wall--

The sound of gatling fire rung in Nidhogg's ears as he took cover just in time behind one of the wall's crenelations. As the squid passed right by the wall it killed two less fortunate soldiers, who fell at Nidhogg's feet. Nidhogg was pinned behind to the wall as the squid continued to fire it's gatling. The steady rattle of the gun continued for what seemed like an hour, until a loud BANG was heard, along with an explosion that passed over Nidhogg's head. He peered out from cover to see the wreckage of the squid fall below the wall as an allied goldfish soared over head.

Praise the skies

But his hope was diminished as he pulled out his spyglass and examined the Baronies' fleet, only to see a still approaching mass of ships of all kinds along with enough troop transport to carry an army, though still taking a lot of fire, was in no way surrendering any time soon, and growing closer by the minute.

This won't end remotely well

--The Wyvern--

The Wyrm looked through his spyglass at Zankif's ship, emerging from a cloud into the rear flank of the formation.

Wyrm
"Watch out, looks like we got ourselves a maniac. Ready on port guns! I'm bringin' us back to the rear!"

He adjusted course to fly towards the rear of the fleet, nearly crashing into about a dozen ships on the way. Noticing some change in course, Lord Gallafell emerged from his quarters.

Gallafell
"What are you doing!? You're meant to stay in formation with the rest!"

Wyrm
"Screw the formation, I'm gonna save our asses!"

The Wyvern pulled up next to the exposed transports, shielding a few of them from the flanking menuevour, while letting off some hwacha fire into the attackers.

Nidhogg and Tristan stood on the wall near the batteries and scanned the skyline. Nidhogg kept one hand over the hilt of his sword, and the other over his holster. Both brothers had been equipped with body armour and pistol ammo a'plenty. Their bodies and minds were ready for war.

Tristan
"I guess this isn't what you had in mind when you sought 'adventure'"

Nidhogg
"No, not really. And I think, if I survive, I'll return home with you, I'm not cut out for the frontier life."

Tristan
"I'm glad."

The two shared a last brotherly hug before the battle.

--Saloon--

Nidhogg and Tristan sat in the corner looking on at the scene of merriment.

Nidhogg
"Strange, you don't expect to see this much enjoyment before a battle."

Tristan
"Oh sometimes that's the best time for enjoyment. Fear is a motivator, a good one. But rememberence of all you love gives you something to fight for other than self preservation."

He gestured at BrdLineAzn.

"... What do you think he'll be fighting for, because I garuntee you it's more than his own life."

Nidhogg
"So love trumps fear. That sounds really cliche."

Tristan
"But true."

Nidhogg
"Ever the poet, as usual."

They both took a swig of Hellfire, which Tristan gulped down with an espression of endurance.

Tristan
"What even is this stuff?"

Nidhogg
"I really don't know, but it grows on you."

Nidhogg then gulped down the rest of his mug, before making a start on Tristan's. Tristan did not object.

Nidhogg presented his sword to Lockheart.

Nidhogg
"Yes it is, the insignia of house Valtivere. The sword itself is designed more as a duelling blade, but it's seen it's fair share of combat."

He looked at the Yeshan blade.

Nidhogg
"But that is quite impressive, Yeshan I presume, based on the traditional design, and definitely looks effective. I imagine both will see action in the coming days for certain."

He raised his mug, before taking another swig.

Tristan and Nidhogg entered the Saloon, looking for one last drink. Taking a seat at the bar, Nidhogg looked around at the crowd and spotted Lockheart with his sword drawn. He then pulled out his own to compare.

Nidhogg
"Mine's bigger than yours."

Tristan, meanwhile, ordered two hellfires and passed one down to Nidhogg, before taking a sip of his own, and putting down the drink.

Tristan
"It's an acquired taste I guess."

He said out loud.

--The Wyvern--

The Wyrm's newly repaired ship, 'The Wyvern' sailed through the skies along with the rest of the Baronies' fleet with the Wyrm at the helm. Although the Wyrm had essentially failed in his original task, he had been offered a chance for redemption by helping the fleet take Anvala, which the Wyrm did not complain about in the slightest. He ordered one of his mercenaries to take over before strolling onto the main deck of the galleon and pulling out his rifle. He took aim at a nearby bird and tracked it around the ship, before shooting it down as it passed overhead. The bird landed with a thump at his feet. He was then joined by a regal looking man in fur clothing. The man was Lord Eric Gallafell, a lord sent by the king to 'keep an eye on' the Wyrm.

Gallafell
"Was there any point in that?"

The Wyrm knelt down and examined the bird carcass.

Wyrm
"They say, in the olden days, sages could see the future by examining the entrails of dead birds."

Gallafell leant down to the Wyrm's level, looking at the dead bird.

Gallafell
"Oh really, and can you see the future in the body of a dead bird?"

Wyrm
"In a way, yes. This bird's dead, so too shall a lot of people be in the coming fight... But I don't need a dead bird to tell me that."

He got up and kicked the bird's carcass off the side of the ship, before climbing the steps to the helm and taking position there, adjusting course slightly so as to avoid collision with another ship. Meanwhile, Lord Gallafell yelled up to the Wyrm.

Gallafell
"And don't forget! You still need to kill that bastard Nidhogg and his fool of a brother if you must! He needs to pay for murdering my children!"

The Wyrm walked down the steps back to Gallafell.

Wyrm
"The way I've been hearing it, your fool of a daughter stepped in the way of a duel, taking a sword in the belly, which then took out your son, a partaker in the duel. Your entire family are full of fools and they brought about their own demise. It's all just natural selection. So don't seek revenge for an accidental act, and don't expect me to carry out you petty, vengeful endeavours. I'll wage war for the highest bidder, but I won't assassinate a particular man for the pleasure of an old fool. Good day sir!"

And with that he stomped back to the helm, leaving Gallafell to trod back to his quarters with his tail between his legs.

I've hated many cutthroats and mercenaries in my time, but I truly despise this one.

--Firing range--

Nidhogg had just got his first headshot on the dummy, an achievement which he was extremely proud of, and continued to boast. This went on until Tristan brought over an Elite, who fired three shots, one in each eye and one in the forehead of the dummy, which shut Nidhogg up. Then, satisfied in Nidhogg's slight increase in ability to handle a sidearm, Tristan brought Nidhogg up to the battlements and walked together along the length of it.

Nidhogg
"I'm scared, I think I'm going to die."

Tristan, startled by this sudden expression of fear, stopped and faced Nidhogg.

Tristan
"Don't be, you won't. Or rather, I doubt father would let you."

Nidhogg laughed.

Nidhogg
"Well that's an encouragement lecture to be passed down through the ages."

Tristan
"I could try and be a lot more eloquent. I could quote prophets and philosophers 'till the cows come home. But at the end of the day, any man who doesn't fear death... is an idiot. Every man or woman here..."

He gestured to all the soldiers around them.

"... Is terrified, as am I, as are the enemy themselves. War is old men talking, and young men dying. Many will die, while few talk, and one king sits on a throne with a rod so far up his arse it's a wonder he could even sit on that thing in the first place."

Nidhogg laughed again, before patting his brother on the back and staring at the horizon.

--Firing range--

Tristan and Nidhogg were both leaning against a wall, observing the war preparations taking progress. Nidhogg saw soldiers up on the walls running along the bailey, checking turrets and scouting the horizon, all the while shouting orders at each other. Nidhogg, though fully aware of what was about to happen, struggled to grasp how large it would be.

Tristan
"We could have taken shelter with the civilians, why haven't we?"

Nidhogg
"I don't want to be a coward, cowering from danger. Anyway, I have a ship, why not put it to use."

Tristan
"A ship with no crew but us two, hardly an effective vessel."

Nidhogg
"So then We'll stay with the ground forces, we have weapons."

Tristan
"Swords! While they likely have guns a'plenty. So you'll be needing this."

Tristan conjured a second pistol from his pocket and handed it to Nidhogg.

Nidhogg
"I appreciate the gift, but I'm no marksman."

Tristan
"Neither am I, but had I not had one, you'd likely be dead back in that hamlet."

Nidhogg
"Fair point."

Tristan lead Nidhogg to the firing range to practice his aim with what little time was left. Nidhogg grasped the gun with both hands and pointed it at the target. Pulling the trigger firmly but slowly, he fired a shot into the dummy's shoulder.

Nidhogg
"See, hardly a marksman."

Tristan
"If that dummy was a man trying to kill you, you'd have incapacitated it, weakened it, startled it. A soldier with a bullet in his hide won't be pillaging any cities. Plus, should he be left open, he's in the perfect position to be struck down with your sword, which I know you're a bit better with... a bit."

Nidhogg thumped him on the arm. Tristan laughed.

Nidhogg
"Better than you."

My own invention, "Dinosaur foot"

Toasted bread with tomato ketchup spread on top with melted cheese, cut into soldiers and arranged slightly apart so it looks a bit life a dinosaur foot.

Or... If I'm feeling adventurous, a "Swineosaurus"

A variation on the Dinosaur foot with bacon underneath the cheese.

Seriously, try it, it's the stuff of legends
