The Pit / Re: Burning Skies Saloon Discussion
« on: June 11, 2013, 10:42:49 am »
I think that the Saloon's story arc could be brought to an end to give way for another thread, set in the same narrative, but not restricted to the Saloon itself. But one thing's for sure, if the Saloon was to end, it would have to go out with an explosion of awesomeness.

--The hamlet--

The Wyrm marched down the street towards the remaining mercenary, followed by two others. His face was covered in scars and he had black, matted hair with a platted beard. He wore heavy clothes, a long leather coat with a fur collar, underneath of which was heavy body armour beneath a black waistcoat. He had a rifle strapped to his back, along with duel pistols and plenty of blades in his belt.

Wyrm
"You! You let him escape!"

Mercenary
"I'm sorry, the shot was more difficult than I imagined."

Wyrm
"Yes, I imagine hitting a slowly moving target at medium range in clear light with little distraction is a job only for the best. Let me show you."

The Wyrm then drew a pistol and shot the merc between the eyes.

Wyrm
"Lucky shot I guess."

He turned to the two mercs behind him.

Wyrm
"Get a ship ready. If he's smart he's on his way back to Anvala to seek help. We'll kill him, and anyone sheltering him. Ready a team of our finest. We strike soon."

--A small hamlet--

Nidhogg and Tristan were strolling through the street of the hamlet examining the run-down place.

Nidhogg
"Not much, but it'll keep us hidden."

Tristan was not so sure. Unknown to both of them was a man in body armour at a street corner, cocking his pistol.

Tristan
"I guess, but we should still be caref-"

BANG!

The shot went just between Nidhogg and Tristan's heads, just as more armoured men came out of alley ways and buildings, six in total, including the firer of the shot. Acting with instinct, Nidhogg and Tristan separated to either side of the street amongst the fleeing citizens, drawing their swords at the same time. Nidhogg instantly came across one of the men, who drew a pistol. Nidhogg tackled the man to the ground but struggled to keep him pinned down. The man who originally fired the shot took aim again at Nidhogg, but hit the man on the floor as Nidhogg jerked away.

Nidhogg
"BROTHER!"

He glanced over at Tristan to see him just managing to fend off an attacker with his sword.

Nidhogg
"RUN!"

Tristan heard this and, kicking his attacker to knock him back, started sprinting back to the ship along with Nidhogg. All the while the first attacker kept firing shots, and the remaining four in hot pursuit. As they were nearing the ship, a shot caught Nidhogg in the left arm, luckily not his sword arm. Tristan leapt onto the ship and held out his arm to Nidhogg.

Tristan
"NID!"

Nidhogg grabbed Tristan's arm, who, with his other hand, drew a pistol from beneath his cloak and shot the closest pursuer in the gut. Not a marksman's shot, but enough to slow him down even with the armour. Tristan lifted Nidhogg onto the ship and fired another shot which hit the same target in the head, killing him dead. Nidhogg ran to the helm and cast off the ship while the shooter continued to fire directly at Nidhogg. While the other men drew their own guns. At this point Tristan dashed to the port gatling and mowed down the pursuers. leaving all of them dead except for the shooter, who retreated to the cover of a street corner and fired another pot-shot at Tristan, grazing his knuckle. But Nidhogg cast off the ship and flew off back north to Anvala.

--Nidhogg's ship--

Nidhogg
"Who?"

Tristan
"The Wyrm. Eric Gallafell has sent him to kill you."

The two stopped the spar.

Nidhogg
"I'm not surprised, I killed his eldest son and daughter."

Tristan grabbed Nidhogg's arms.

Tristan
"An accident, but the Gallafells still see it as murder, and have even sent the Wyrm to bring them your head."

Nidhogg
"Is that name meant to mean something to me?"

Tristan broke off and stood at the bow of the ship, examining the main gun, before turning back to Nidhogg.

Tristan
"Yes. A year ago, a squad of bounty hunters successfully captured and imprisoned a pirate crew. Some other pirates didn't like this, so they hired the Wyrm. At the crack of dawn he entered their camp. Within an hour they were all dead."

Nidhogg
"Sounds... dangerous."

Tristan
"Not just him. At his command is an entire troop of highly trained mercenaries, as good as any standard elites."

Nidhogg
"Sounds... like I'm a dead man."

Tristan
"Maybe."

Nidhogg
"So is this the real reason father wants me home, so he can protect me."

Tristan
"Father's a fool, he thinks he can but he really can't. Our only chance is to keep on the move and find help if possible."

Nidhogg
"I'm not going to run forever."

Tristan gave a small smile and leant against the wall as Nidhogg took position at the helm.

Nidhogg
"There's a small hamlet in the distance, we should dock there."

--Nidhogg's ship, somewhere south of Anvala--

Nidhogg awoke after another night beneath the stars on the bridge of his ship, while Tristan was sitting down on the main deck, gazing at the horizon. He looked at Nidhogg.

Tristan
"Good morning brother. I trust you slept well."

Nidhogg
"To be truthful I did not. No idea why."

Tristan
"Well, good, that means you're alert, which you need to be."

Nidhogg joined him on the main deck.

Nidhogg
"Why exactly? You said we'd chat, apparently last night wasn't good enough. What do you need to tell me."

Tristan removed his own cloak to reveal his own sword at his side. He then stood at the other side of the deck.

Tristan
"Can you still dance and talk at the same time?"

Nidhogg drew his sword along with Tristan.

Nidhogg
"I'm not getting sloppy, if that's what you're implying."

Tristan
"Let's see then."

They both held their sword in front of their face, before slowly advancing on each other and engaging. They fought with a sort of routine as they had all through their life, as they were both very familiar with the other's techniques. Nidhogg knew exactly when Tristan would strike right, or feign left. And visa versa.

Nidhogg
"So then"

The clash of swords punctuated his speech.

"... What do you need to tell me?"

--Nidhogg's ship--

I've stayed in Anvala long enough, and things have already started blowing up, best continue with my journey of... I guess adventure.

He looked around the ship.

Damn, still no crew.

He rummaged around in his pocket, but found only a small amount of coins.

And I can't hire a crew, I really shouldn't have drank so many Hellfires. Ah well, I guess I'll just have to be careful.

He then took position at the helm, but got the feeling something wasn't right. He wasn't alone.

A voice from behind
"No crew, interesting choice."

Nidhogg did not react with hostility for he knew the voice. Turning around, he placed a hand on the man's shoulder. The man was taller and some would say handsomer than Nidhogg, but he had the same long hair tied in a loose ponytail, only a much darker blonde.

Nidhogg
"Tristan, brother, it's good to see you"

They hugged each other in a brotherly embrace. Before separating.

Nidhogg
"Why are you here? Are you just visiting or- Oh, you're going to try to retrieve me for Father."

Tristan
"No, Father did not send me. I'm just genuinely worried about you."

Nidhogg
"As per usual, you worry too much for your little 'Nid'."

Tristan
"Haha, true, but I also need to talk to you, cast off and we'll chat."

And so Nidhogg disembarked on his ship with his brother into the sky.

--Outside the Saloon--

Nidhogg had been lingering outside against a wall with the guards, pondering.

Nidhogg
So an explosion sends everyone their separate ways, and I still hadn't learnt all their names, ah well. One can't expect assassins to be courteous.

He then walked up to address Yiski.

Nidhogg
"So you're to lock yourself away in an armoury, better than a pub I suppose, but alas, still unfortunate."

--Nidhogg's ship, "Pallisarde"--

*BOOOOM*

Nidhogg
"Great nimbus!"

He was jolted from his sleep by the sound of the explosion, even on his ship. He quickly got up, suddenly alert to the sounds of gunfire. Making haste to change into proper clothes, he then noticed the gunfire ceasing. He made his way into a street, keeping a hand by his sword's handle, and saw a cloaked man dashing down the road. In that split second his mind came to a logical conclusion. He tried to stop the man.

Nidhogg
"Hey! What are you-"

He was shoved to the ground, but the collision caused the spy to trip and fall. Drawing his sword with swiftness, Nidhogg got up along with the spy, who drew a small knife from his cloak. The spy, suddenly realising the rather humorous difference in equipment, made a dash in his original direction. Nidhogg made a slash at the spy, but only catching him on the left arm, leaving a cut. But the spy was gone nonetheless, easily being able to outpace Nidhogg, who gave up the chase.

Nidhogg
"Blast!"
Where did all that commotion take place? Actually, where else?

He headed off in the direction of the Saloon.

Nidhogg sits and examines the explosive from a distance and thought to himself.

Nidhogg
"And now I guess bombs. This rag-tag bunch seems to be more than meets the eye. Best I don't question minor things like explosives."

When the guards enter Nidhogg is not overly worried, as he is more concerned about his rapidly emptying drink.

Nidhogg
"I'm sorry, 'missing'? What happened"

Whilst he says this he puts his sword back in its sheath and removes his cloak, placing it on the bar.

Nidhogg
"Ancestral treasure? No, It was made for me, for duelling, to settle disputes etcetera. Most of the time people duel with pistols but one can't deny the pleasurable act of twirling a fine blade through the air, or flesh, if need be. But I try to avoid such acts... Try."

He continues to take swigs from the Hellfire.

Nidhogg
"But enough about me. This doesn't just go one way. What are your stories?"

Nidhogg
"Anvala? No. I'm from the Baronies, part of a fairly powerful house. I've been travelling around the Burren now for, what is it? A month now. I left because..."

He takes a swig of his new favourite drink.

Nidhogg
"...Because I err, technically I was exiled. Partly because of this."

He then puts down the drink, parts his cloak and draws his saber. He then holds it in front of him, running his hand along the non-sharp end from hilt to tip, before laying it down on the bar.

Nidhogg
"And also apparently Dylan is surprisingly eloquent."

He chuckles to himself, before grasping the Hellfire and holding it in front of his face.

Nidhogg
"In at the deep end I suppose."

He then takes a sip, and then a gulp, before downing it in one.

Nidhogg
"Great nimbus! Doesn't half vaporise your sinuses does it."

Nidhogg pulls back his hand and turns to face Sky.

Nidhogg
"Nidhogg is my name, but I know little of any of you."

He looks around in thought.

Nidhogg
"...Other than the fact that the bodyguard is either very untrusting... or wise, Yiski's brews aren't to be taken lightly, and apparently a burial has taken place recently. I ask not for details, just context."
