How do GOIO ships land?!
« on: October 23, 2013, 11:09:13 am »
So, I was walking along my merry way, when I almost fell over from the realisation that GOI ships would be next-to-impossible to land/dock.

Like, if they came down as hot air balloons would, the bottom structures would be damaged. For ships such as Spires, how would they land at all in that sense? Is there some kind of huge landing structure that would fit every single ship?

Are all ships in the GOI setting all of the same class? Surely there would be a lot of difference, especially with Junker-like ships, so how could these ships dock without breaking bits off?

I need to know this, else I will never be able to sleep again.

Past airships didn't land to off board passengers and goods, they landed at preconstructed airship docks such as this.

Originally the large spire on the empire state building was intended for this function.  The planners unfortunately forgot to account for wind, oh and then that hindenburg thing happened.

Right, thanks.  But then, how would they get repairs done? The same dock?

Everything is repaired by the crew mid flight through concussive maintenance withe hammers and wrenches.

It's like your new to airships or something.

I would assume docks are extremely large (mostly to accommodate for galleons). Of course, large docks would only be possible in large cities with heavy trade or military installations. For small towns and cities, Smollet's pic would probably be the best thing they have.

As far as 'landing', I'd have to guess the balloons on all ships would still be active to prevent any touching (which then means the docks are positioned probably a couple hundred feet higher than the ground level of a city).

Of course, keeping the balloon active would require the crew to throw down a lot of lines to keep the ship from drifting either naturally or when a heavy storm comes rolling through. Even then, dock workers would have to regularly check all the docked ships' balloons to ensure there are no leaks causing the ships to 'sink'.

Well, judging by Muse's adventure mode concept art, it'd be something like this...

Ever heard of an airship hanger?

The Hindenburg disaster was the turning point of the disuse of airships. Are you saying that Cake wished for airships to stop being used?

All I'm saying is that there was a lot of fire.

Please Hamster, my explanation for airship repairs is much more logical and realistic.
