Hey guys!
Reviving this thread from a lifetime ago.

I'm not sure how many people remember this thread when it popped up, but it's been a large part of my year and it felt like it would never end.

I successfully completed and presented my thesis last week and I'm pretty happy with how it all turned out. Now I just sit and twiddle my thumbs while waiting for my grades to come in. And video games, lots of video games.

I just want to thank everyone that donated their time to participate, we ended up with over 500 valid participants which is a mind blowing amount for a college level study, and made a very diverse and comprehensive sample. So, thank you.

If anyone is still curious or interested, I'm going to write up a little summary of the results and what they might mean and post it in here. I'll also try to articulate what the issues in my thesis were that I mentioned earlier that may have given me a couple gray hairs. I'll try to get this up shortly!

Thanks again guys.

I ban Sammy for making me think of BLT whenever I see his name and it makes me hungry.

No no, they are all split up into separate videos once they go up on youtube. So I did indeed check after the listing for the Gents vs MM match, and the only one left on the list was something marked private.

However, since I made that post the other day, the private thing had gone away and has been replaced by the video that was missing. I don't know what actually happened but either way the problem's solved. :)

Cool. Are all the videos up or are some still uploading? I ask because I don't see the paddling vs overcake match up there. However I do see one video marked private and it cannot be accessed, perhaps that's the one and some switch got flipped on it?

...Who has enough time to go through videos that carefully?

We're insane. Didn't you know?

It makes it easy when you can... enhance.

It doesn't seem to like dual screens when you do that though. Whenever I use windowed mode it keeps shunting the window between my two monitors, and it will do it whenever the game changes through say, a major option screen. It got so annoying I just stuck to full windowed mode and put up with the same stuff the OP describes.

Edit: Huh. I just went back to my steam library and removed the -popupwindow command and then put it back in  to give it another try. Seems like it works better now. Neat.

Sometimes I forget how young this community is. I mean, I'm not even old, but damn. You guys are young.

Not even in a bad way too, in most other gaming communities that have a young population, it is obvious. But not so much here.

So, kudos.

Great games today CakeWatch! That second one was a real nailbiter, and you really got us on the third. It's been a lot of fun regularly rumbling with you guys and watching you get better and better. Looking forward to more exciting and challenging matches!

I believe PAX Prime is in Seattle, PAX East is in Boston.

There is even a PaxAus now, and it was amazing.

I've noticed this problem a few times, once even from a duck :( What are we supposed to do about it? Just call people out verbally? Report them?

If you know the person, and you take issue with what they said, I would try talking to them (perhaps privately), and if it's clan related, talk to someone higher up that will be listened to, and ask them to have a word with that person, especially if they got defensive about you taking issue with their behaviour. You can also mute and/or report. You don't have to allow them to subject you to that kind of stuff.

A lot of the problem is to do with how casual that word is in the context of gaming, it's become such a strong part of the common lingo used when describing a game. I have even heard it used during streams by Icarus casters. Now, I'm sure it wasn't on purpose, and there wouldn't have been anything malicious behind it, but at this point in gaming culture the word is the equivalent to saying that one side really soundly defeated the other. That's bad. We need to separate words like this from their casually used nature. This also applies to other words that involve hate and bigotry. The gaming community uses them so casually and dismiss anyone offended by it as 'butthurt'.

I supposed this is as good a time as any to introduce this. But I recently became aware of this site.

http://gamersagainstbigotry.org/

It has a kind of petition in it where you vow to be aware of the language you use and how the connotations behind them can really hurt people, regardless of YOUR intended use of the word. It also has a section in there about the casual use of the word 'rape'. Found here: http://gamersagainstbigotry.org/2012/07/why-you-should-stop-saying-rape-casually-in-games/

Now I'm not demanding that people actually sign it. but it might be a good thing to keep in mind when trying to be aware about the gravity of this kind of speech. We can make this a really good community.
