Gameplay / Forgoing a Firefighting Tool
« on: November 13, 2014, 12:45:31 pm »
A main engineer load-out is mallet - spanner - spray/extinguisher.
A buff engineer load-out is wrench - buff - spray/extinguisher.

But these load-outs are common place.

So, a load-out of mallet - spanner - buff. Is this viable? Is this recommendable? Can we hear opinions or anecdotes?

Q&A / Which Tools for Which Ships?
« on: November 12, 2014, 11:34:24 am »
I mostly fly a pyramidion or a goldfish. Only recently have I tried piloting more complex ships like mobula and spire. (My favorite ship to pilot is now a mobula.)

So, I want to ask a question to the top pilots, which tools for which ships?

The Lounge / Many many crews

Have anybody thought about this?

How would the game balance change if ships had more than 4 people on it?

Q&A / Evasive Maneuvers

She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid.

Let's talk about piloting.

You have been ambushed, there is a pyramidion on your aft and a goldfish on your port side beam. Hull/armor is dropping, and your powdermonkey crews are in a full panic mode, cowering on the corner of the ship and crying for their mothers. However, you are the pilot on this ship, and you have a trick up your sleeve...

What is your insane pilot maneuver? What insane pilot maneuvers have you witnessed? Let's talk about maneuvers.

Feedback and Suggestions / Character Gender by Class
« on: November 10, 2014, 09:23:49 pm »
One of my favorite things about Guns of Icarus Online is the Aesthetics. The game is simply beautiful. Combat is graceful. The world is sublime.

The character cosmetics, albeit limited, enthralls me.

My favorite Pilot dress happens to be War Room (male), my favorite Engineer dress happens to be The Tinkerer (male), and my favorite Gunner dress happens to be Lost Soldier (female).
It's quite a hassle switching my gender every time I switch to gunner. I'd like cosmetic gender to be locked to each class.

I might be asking Muse too much, and I don't want to increase their workload with a irrelevant request. So I want you guy's opinion.

Do you guys sympathize with my annoyance? Do you guys think this is big enough of an issue to request a change?

Thank you for reading.  :)

The Lounge / Johnny Gat
« on: November 10, 2014, 11:39:56 am »
My friend told me that my avatar (Shaded Spectacle and Adventurer Hair) looks like Johnny Gat from Saints Row.

Should I change my ID to Johnny Gatman and troll by firing only the gatling?

Q&A / Knowing Gun's Damage
« on: November 05, 2014, 11:00:41 am »
When you are shooting, is there a way to tell your gun's health and number of firestacks? I can't see any UI that tells me gun health while shooting, and I'd like to whack my gun with something if it's close to being broken.

The Pit / Venting
« on: November 04, 2014, 10:53:49 pm »
I'm posting this on the pit because I'm gonna vent.
Angry posts are probably toxic for the community. Let me vent in the Pit.

Match Maker put me as a pilot/captain on a ship with three level 1 crews. (I've won most of the last few games, so this was a logical balancing) This, I did not have a problem with.

Seeing three novices, I thought, let's fly a metamidion. Teach them how to fly on a easy ship with set roles.
I tried to communicate, no response. Not angry yet. This is a typical action a novice crews make. As long as they can hear me, we should be fine.
I explained how a metamidion works. Two people on front guns, one main engi keeping the hull and engine up. Right?

Turns out they can't find the ladder to the front guns... When they found it, only the gunner went up. Two engis on bottom deck. Okay, I can still maneuver this ship to do stuff. Ramming is still valid.

Oh, turns out they don't know how to repair the engines. I can't kero nor moonshine because, when I tell them repair the engines, I'm using Kero, Kero damages the engines for more speed, they haven't got a clue on what to do.

And OMG, they don't know what a repair cool down is. Okay, I tell them (later yell at them) that components go on a cool down after you whack it. Meaning that you can repair something else. You don't have to stand next to an engine the whole time. Guess what, they stay on one engine the whole time, together.

Oh, and the gunner's pretty accurate. Must've come from a FPS game. But when the gun's on fire, he whacks it with his mallet. No engineer is going to make that gun useable. He keeps the gun alive, with 20 stacks of fire.

So the first match, we barely pulled off a kill (mostly from luck and rams) but we went down four times, against a Hwachafish with an awful accuracy. We never took a full hwacha volley, but we still went down.

So, metamidion is too hard for them. Calm down Indreams. Calm. I switch to the easiest ship, the Blenderfish. We have a little mutiny where an engineer changed to a pilot. He never tells me why. He never says a word. No one says a word in the entire match but GG. He changes back when I tell him he needs to communicate why he's changing.

I explain the Blenderfish to them. Gunner stay on the front gun always. An engineer stay next to the Hull and the Starboard Gun. Another one keep the engine and the balloon up. But balloon shouldn't matter because the enemy have mercury guns.

This is where the rage starts. The Gunner is NEVER on the front gun. He's on the staircase leading to the upper deck. An engineer is NEVER at the Hull. He's on the port-side gun. The other engineer ALWAYS stays on the balloon. NEVER leaves the spot. Keeps whacking the balloon with the spanner.

An enemy Goldfish passes right across our front gun and no body shoots anything. At this point, I'm yelling on my mic, SHOOT SOMETHING!

O, and our alley Galleon is on the edge of the map, doing shit with Hwacha and Flak. They are pretty much never in combat.

By the end of the match, I'm yelling: REPAIR THE HULL! STAY ON THE BLOODY FRONT GUN! THE HULLS DOWN! THE HULL! THE HULL! THE ARMOR! THE THING WITH THE SHIELD ON IT! BLOODY ______ ___ STAY OFF THAT BALLOON! IT'S PERFECTLY FINE!

After the match, I apologize for getting angry, and leave the crew to write this vent.

I'm not sure if this is a good description of what happened tonight. But the problem was, three novice crews who were stubborn and refuses to make any communication. I feel like a better player, a CA mod maybe, would've been able to turn these young powder monkey's into proper crew members. I couldn't. I got angry. I really shouldn't have. I needed to vent. That's why I'm posting this in the Pit. I'm sorry if this is bad. I'm sorry if you didn't like what you read. But I really needed a vent. I could also really use a hug...

Q&A / What do you use Range Finder for?
« on: November 02, 2014, 02:05:36 pm »
Range Finder is probably the least used tool in the game.

I think the only use for it is when you are shooting a lumberjack or heavy flak. Even then, an experienced gunner can hit without a range finder.

Has anybody found a good use for the range finder? If so, what is it?

Guides / Guns of Icarus Ships Graph
« on: October 29, 2014, 07:24:49 pm »
This isn't a typical guide, recommending builds or play style.

Just out of curiosity, I've made several graphs to compare ships in Guns of Icarus Online.
The attached file is the outcome of my little experiment.
It's compressed and divided into two parts because the forum won't let me attach a big file.

I hope the graphs helps whether you are choosing a ship, writing a guide, designing a new ship, or just studying trivia.

----------------------------

If you have any comments or criticism, I’d be happy to receive them.
If there are any errors (typos, grammar, or data), I’d be happy to edit them.

Feel free to use any of these graphs in your work (guides, forum posts, etc.). In fact, I’d be honored if these graphs are of any use.

----------------------------

If you’d like a personalized graph, you can email me at gamindreams@gmail.com. I’ll try to answer back by the end of the week.
Word of caution, if you send me spam, I will block you, permanently.

Q&A / How to approach a Galleon
« on: October 23, 2014, 10:25:28 pm »
I played a CP against a galleon today, feels like there is no good way to close the distance with the galleon.

Can't approach its sides. Medium guns will disable everything.
Can approach the front, but we're detected immediately.
Can't approach the aft, I've been mined, flamed, and harpoon/moonshine-rammed before, and I'd rather not repeat the experience.
(harpoon/moonshine is cheesy, but I think it's an instakill)

So, experienced players and competitive pros, how do you approach a galleon?

World / Government in the GOIO
« on: October 23, 2014, 10:03:18 am »
The forum seems to be missing a thread on Government. As a political science nerd, I couldn't resist a thread on that.

So, how are the factions governed?

It's clear that the Anglean Republic has a representative government of some form (Republic is in the name.)
I'd assume that the Yesha Empire has some form of an emperor and central government.
The Fjord Baronies, I imagine, would have a hereditary oligarchy.

Other factions are unclear on how they are governed.

It'd be interesting to imagine how these factions would be governed, if they are not governed at all.

Thank you for reading,  :)

Q&A / That moment when the Captain leaves mid-game.
« on: October 22, 2014, 10:52:16 am »
I was playing a match this morning where the captain left just as the game started.  :-[

I took helm as a gunner, we managed a kill, but we eventually lost.

The question is:

What is the best way to manage without a pilot/captain?

Who should take helm? Who should man the guns? How do we communicate with the other team? What is the best way to play without a pilot?

Thank you.
