Cogs Pick & Pun
« on: April 17, 2013, 10:35:35 pm »
Now that the Cogs are full and the maps a chosen I figured it was high time for a place to share our predictions for matches semi competitively.

This is entirely for fun. THERE IS NO BETTING INVOLVED.

Pick & Pun costs nothing to enter (although do feel free to leave an optional pun). The winner receives bragging rights and a terrible title forced upon him or her like an unfortunate rash.

A bonus to this is we'll be able to see crowd favourites going into a match. I'll work up a percentage for each matchup before Cogs begins.

Here's how it works.

Each week you pick your choice of winners from each match.
You get 1 point for a correct pick.
You must put in a predicted score for the Champion vs Challenger match and this will serve as a tiebreaker if it comes to that.
At the end of the season the scores are tallied and the person with the highest receives the semi-illustrious title of Punner of Pickarus! (Told you it was terrible.)

Set your submission out like this:

Week 5

(optional Puns of Icarus here)

Match 1: Corvus Marauders
Match 2: Gentlemen
Match 3: Polaris Company: 5-4

(Then any comments like:)
Yes I know, no Ducks. But the Dover are new, the Gentlemen are Jugglenauts and Polaris are obviously insane magical sky ponies leaving a vapour trail of confused sky-corpses wherever they fly.

I'll put up a working spreadsheet once week 5 is over so you can keep track of your scores.

Picks will be open as soon as the week's preview is out.

PICKS MUST BE IN BY FRIDAY 4PM EST.
This is to give me time to enter the submissions and work out crowd favourite percentages.

I will not accept submissions after that time.

I will not accept edits or changes. Please, think before you hit that submit button.

Ok, we have 4 weeks left! That's 12 potential points.

Corvus Marauders vs The Dover
The Gentlemen vs The Brood
The Paddling vs Polaris Company

Get picking and punning!

Match 1: Corvus 5-4
(i bet ducks will take galleon-pyra, and corvus will take smth else, but they will win only because they have more experience)
Match 2: The Gentlemen 5-0
(fjords... gentleman... no mercy...)
Match 3: The Paddling 5-2
(i just hope for that :)

Corvus vs. The Dover - a win for Corvus
The Gentlemen vs. The Brood - a win for the Gentlemen
The Paddling vs. Polaris Company - a win for Polaris, 5-2

Museosaurs vs. Occasionally Effective - a win for Muse (after at least two stewards enquiries)

I will refrain from betting on my own game.

but:

match 2: the gents
Fjords is a semi open map, if brood takes tha match head on, gents have shown time after time that they know how to react to that.

match 3: Polaris
Polaris is a rather new team, we dont know what they are capable of before this match is over, but experience tells my gut that they will take it.

Muse vs. OE : Muse
say what you will about muse, but they have become better this past month.

First match - The Dover 5/4 - Predicting a very close match full of surprises.

Second match - The Brood 5/3 - I think their tail is up, and although i don't have any foundation for this comment I'm betting they rock the double Pyra for a fairly brutal close quarters win.

Third match? - Skrimskraw has the right of it shouldn't comment on ones own game. All I'll say is that the insane magical sky ponies are pretty damn scary.

Caster vs Muse - I think muse is desperate for this win, if only to silence the criticism of the casters. I think it'll get them close... but not close enough.

See the betting is really hurting my confidence.

Match 1 Dover 9 to -2
Match 2 Brood 5 to 2
Match 3 Polaris 5 to 4

Nice to see such a response! Keep it up guys.

I had been debating including Muse vs Occasionally Effective but decided against it for several reasons. However people seem to be enjoying throwing their predictions in for that match so I'll still do up the odds for it and if everyone who's already posted adds that match I'll let it count for points.

As for betting on ones own match, it's good to see people forego picking when they're not comfortable. If you'd like a more hard and fast rule on this I'd ask probably for a different thread just to keep this one somewhat clean for my sake on the day before and after Cogs. Either way this is more of a casual thing and the not picking own matches might balance out some advantages you'd have being in one of the teams.

Also it's good to see almost everyone having fun putting up full score predictions. Just remember only the score for the Champion event counts toward a tiebreaker.

There is a distinct lack of puns. I wonder if people are Cog-nisant of the pun element.

Keep the picks rolling in guys!

Match 1: Corvus 5:3 | I can almost see Corvus running a galeon/pyra here, and the map is kind to sniping, combined with Phoebe being pretty good at lumber means the Dover will have a hard time
Match 2: The Gents 5:2 | long range map, plus how well the gents know it will make it hard to push it to short range, causing issues with the brood
Match 3: The Paddling 5:1 | I would never underestimate the might of Polarise, but going on how well the ducks fared on the same map last game I can see them pulling a hard but decisive win.

One would have to be Quackers to bet against the ducks, and if you do, well we will make sure you end up with a big bill!

Edit:

Match 4(!): Muse 5:2 | Muse have gotten a lot better, and the casters should stick to what they are good at, as its sure not flying ;) =P
