Personally I find the white rectangle to be immersion breaking. Also I find players carrying limitless one-caliber-fits-all ammo to be immersion breaking. Also I find chicken feet magically decreasing drag to be immersion breaking.

Facetiousness aside, this would be a rather large buff to sniping because you can more precisely tell a ship's lateral vector when aiming through cloud cover, and the precise locations of components instead of having to guesstimate based on minimap orientation.. I vote we test it in devapp first, like we do all such changes.

p.s. incorporating this into a rangefinder buff is a good idea IMO

the white box also breaks immersion.  Just to give some perspective.

I would have to use and see it before I approve/disapprove of it.

In adventure mode, when we might fight multiple weak (minion) ships at once, this could be very useful.

In skirmish, where we usually know what we are fighting, I don't know how this would work.

Being able to not only see where the enemy is through clouds (when spotted) you would also be able to see how their ship is positioned, thus making it easier to snipe out guns, or plan an according approach based on their momentum (M button OP).

I think this outline is okay, but maybe having not only the red outline, but the white box as well.  Otherwise, the current system is fine. 

EDIT:  A lot of people talking about how "white shows up better."

Let's say we make the red outline White, instead.  Thoughts on that?

It does, but its not as offensive as a glowing red/blue outline made from lazors.

Hard to find a good balance. You want to see the spot through white clouds but you don't want it to be too jarring.

Considering how unreliable current spotting mechanics are, and how little sense they can make sometimes... I'm against this new outline, it provides too much information and could result in some balancing issues especially for the bigger squishier ships. (Looking at you spire, you poor fragile thing. :P )

I'd like to see the spots like that. Mostly because the white rectangles barely give any information about the enemy ship besides their relative position to you. Sure, you can estimate their distance with the map or radar, but seeing the tiny enemy ship to know it's 2km away instead of relying on remembering the sizes of the map squares or the circles on the radar. So basically, every argument, besides optical dislike, that was brought by people before this post is a pro instead of a contra for me. Sniping will get a little easier. Not much because you still will loose spots when enemies are in clouds, however sniping never really was a good strategy to begin with. So It can use that tiny buff.

I think we should keep it, but make it white and addnthe box.  If we're worrying about balance, maybe just turn it into an arrow?

Fix the spotting first please. This new UI is not good as it will make being behind cloud but still spotted for some reason very punishing as they will know EXACTLY where your weapons are, where your hull is and etc.

Not good currently, and in the future would buff spotting by too much.

it makes hiding in cloud cover moot. There's this level of satisfaction of shooting blindly into a box. Approximating where the ship will actually be in that box.

I do wish spotting worked properly for me though. I have had times when I could plainly see the ship but couldn't spot. Even in gat range and everything and still no spot.

sometimes its due to lag, other times its just plain bugginess.

Maybe only while a spyglass is actively on a target, much like the rangefinder. Otherwise, white marker.

What if the rangefinder could do this on a spotted ship? :o Because it reveals quite enough details to the ship and having a rangefinder allready diminishes the effect of getting spots.

So an active rangefinder pointing on an enemy ship revealing this type of spot on an allready spotted target imo would be a good reason to start using range finders.
