No Noob is Good Noob
« on: July 12, 2014, 07:14:19 pm »
Hope that gets some attention.  I think we, the community, should agree to not use the term noob anymore.  It is derogatory, and no one likes being considered one.

I think we should agree to use some other term.  I for one nominate Greenhorn.  We can make it a term of respect for who they are, but also that they are already part of OUR community, and we will not degrade them with malicious terms from OTHER games.  This game is unique.  We should use some more unique language.

Thoughts?

I also use Greenhorn and newbie, it's just annoying that noob which spinned off newbie became such a bad slur.

okay I will start calling new plays "powder monkeys" instead of my current naming of "YOU!" "idjit" "useless" and "Sally"

I concur! Anything with a negative connotation should be out. (even newbie) if it ends with "ie" it feels negative and condescending.

I like greenhorn.

I like powder monkey even more. Let's popularize that.
I think I am going to incorporate that into my clan page to start the trend.
We set on Powder Monkey?

I never thought newbie was offensive. Isn't there a distinct difference between "newbie" and "noob"?

Or, maybe my internet slur vocabulary dictionary is outdated.

I call 'em "1's" (referring to their rank) usually instead of noob.

Of course, that doesn't work when Geormr decides to engineer.  :P

I never thought newbie or noob as derogatory either, in and of itself.  it's moreso the way it's used.  if someone says with a particular tone of voice that screams frustration "you're such a noob," no, that isn't going to feel good.  that's a particular context, though.

I don't see fault in using Powder Monkey instead, but I do see that, as the term becomes more regularly used, it'll essentially be used the same way noob or newbie is now.  someone screaming in frustration "you're such a powder monkey" isn't going to feel any less derogatory.

I'll quote the Soldier from TF2, all newbie engineers should be called 'Grease Monkeys' now.

I don't get it. Why don't we call new players 'new players'?   :D
