Play a few novice games, there you can try out the basic ships which are quite balanced. After that you will have some idea about ships and guns. Then, as above said, you will have to experiment with ships and builds to know which one suits you. All ships are very good but, your playstyle determines the ships which is ideal for you.
Also I recommend watching Guns of Icarus videos and competitions, because you can get cool ideas from there and also learn a lot about the game.
