Fully Rotatable Cannons
« on: June 29, 2013, 10:33:09 am »
Hi Guys,
Me and my friends have been fantasising about the new ship Manta Ray. We know it has the balloon on the bottom so we thought it would be cool to have something like a heavy cannon which can rotate 360 degrees and easily shoot backwards as well as shooting forwards.

We know it could be late in development for the Manta Ray to receive this sorta of thing, but for future ship designs it would be very cool to have something like this.

And off topic, make the Spire stronger it dies far too easily in our experiences.

It would have to be really limited in some other way or the Goldfish would suddenly become a broadside ship haha. Can you imagine?

Also, Spire thread here for your gripes and suggestions (you and your friends are not alone)

Well it's certainly too late for such a thing to go on the Manta, since the ship is completed and will be released within the next week or so.

The main problem I see with such an idea is that it wouldn't work on any of the current ships. The Galleon, Goldfish and Spire can't really accommodate for that type of gun. It'd require an entirely new ship to be designed, or for the current ones to be changed. But who knows, maybe Muse plans on having something like that for Adventure Mode (pure speculation).

And yes, something needs to be done about the Spire.

I thought about a ship like that, too.

Even further. A ship composed of two gondolae, connected by extensible ropes (about 10 meters max lenght).
Two pilots. One controls the right gondola, the other the left one. Gondoale are tethered by ropes but otherwise free to move in any direction as guided by the pilots.
One helm has nearby hull, the other has nearby balloon point.
One gunner has a 360 gun that house TWO gun turrets, one to be shot with right click and one with left click.

Of course the two pilots can move the gondolae and extend the ropes connecting them up to 10 meters. More than 10 meters the ropes break and the ship is destroyed :D

Someday, when MUSE has unlimited funds and manpower, they should hold a wacky ship concept contest and turn the top ten into limited time only ships - one week of madness like this

Unless you restrict the horizontal traverse, having a 360 degree vertical traverse would have the potential to be OP.. imagine a carronade that can be pointed vertically downwards.

Mind you, the puzzle then is.. how do you keep the Gunner the right way up and not hanging upside down in his seat when the gun is pointing backwards?

well, would be cool if the tech in the game could develop, but you only really need 360 rotation as a defensive measure, usually against being attacked from below or above.  With the current state of aircraft and weaponry in this game you dont actually have to worry about that too much.  It would be a defense against biplane attacks, but only really from below, the top is blocked by the baloon(on most ships). so any biplane pilot worth his virtual salt would avoid that bottom turret that is specifically designed for defense against him/her. and attack from the top. then we are back to a pilot positioning the airship so the top guns can kill the biplanes.

so all in all a 360 turret would be cool but its a defensive thing, with the current way ships work, its not needed.  and when biplanes are involved, its a defense that is not needed unless the AI is suicidal.

Spire does need a little buff it seems, it is called "Pyra Bait" for a reason after all.

360° guns would be pretty hard to implement on the "old" ships. Also, only making it available on special ships would boost them even more.

I think it's good the way it is now!

360° fiering arc would break ship balance for some skips (manta ray is a perfect example).

The point of gun facing IS that the guns have limited fiering arc.
