In all seriousness it's a matter of keeping the setting.  Sky whales COULD fit as Lord Dick Tim mentioned, as the mermaids of this steampunk world.  I'm not sure I'd really want them to actually be alive in the game, though NPC's explaining away missing ships as sky whale attacks would fit like a glove.

It started as a joke during the launch party as something I blurted out in the chat feed, it got noticed, I believe goofy enthusiasm got rolling as paper plates with press x for sky whales started appearing on the feed.  And I just kept pushing it for the lols, before you know it lots of people are tickled by the experience and it mutated into what it is now.  It was also around the time boarding was really getting shot down, so it gave a ridiculous rally point for everyone.

So keep those whale pictures rolling!

So wandering the Internet I decide to look up old oil paintings of military officers.  Find one I like, decide I'll try to freehand it (you have no idea how many times I drew this mans right eye and forhead), before I gave up completely and left the eye a squiggle.

Now how to make it more diesel punk?

You should of seen the braiding on this mans collar, I can't recreate that with my finger, way to much detail.  But a monocle, could swing that.  My artistic skill though never progressed from mimicking what I can see, so I'll have to find a good picture of a monocle.

I see, I find it easier to write things then to draw them.

You can get a wacom drawing stylus for the iPad if you'd prefer that for doing detail like the braided collar. It is pretty cheap too (unlike every other wacom product =P).

A bit more gruff: Sand and sun will age the face. Add crows feet to the corners of the eyes. Cogs never hurt a uniform when you're trying for this kind of thing.

A women covers her face in a Chan-Ning market.  Just a sketch, still experimenting with how much I can do with just my good ole finger stylus.  Wish a pencil would work, has to be able to conduct electricity to work with the iPad screen.  That and using pencil and paper is icky for me, I erase lines way to often.
Really happy with the crane on the dress, was testing how much detail I could put on something, was just gonna leave the squiggles.
Maybe we should have a break away thread for different locales?
