I'm with shinkurex, I make some amazing stick figures.  Talk of the battalion I was, with my stick figure brigades and poorly drawn battle plans done with crayons and magic markers.
So you keep them coming, one of us needs to have some kind of talent!

I did a little doodling at work the other day. I am soooo out of practice, though. I've had an idea for a drawing for a while but I just cannot get proportions correct right now. ><

I had some artistic talent as a child that developed some what in High school, but I never put the hours and hours and hours into practice to improve it.
So now I write, because a picture paints a thousand words, but you only get 50 to describe it in.

This. I basically haven't progressed in artistic talent since my freshman year of college.

well, if it makes you guys feel better I'm more interested in the imagination side of things, I'm not expecting every person here to pull out a Mona Lisa or something, hell i don't even expect that from myself. But i am interested in what ideas you can bring out through art that are swirling around in your heads,

ie, i'd rather see a really cool design rendered as a stick figure, then a boring design rendered like a god of artists drew it (mostly cause i'd feel horribly jealous but that's besides the point). . . worst thing is if i was in your position i'd be drooling to post some fan art . .but i don't technically think anything i do Guns of Icarus related is fan art even if i'm doing it for the fun of it :X

Fine, I made a picture, my fine ass finger painting skills on my iPad.

It is super hard to draw a line when you can't quite tell where the cursor is going to be.  So I settled for simple shapes and elementary school perspective, flat!

On another note, this iPad paint app is super powerful.  Got all sorts of crazy stuff on it.

Ok I decided to try and put some effort into actually using this app with my finger painting skills.  I got a little carried away with the terrain and sort of forgot the direction I was taking it in.  It's not finished yet, suppose to be a picture of canyons in the Burren from the wheel.

I dont understand the controversy to making this a reality

In all seriousness it's a matter of keeping the setting.  Sky whales COULD fit as Lord Dick Tim mentioned, as the mermaids of this steampunk world.  I'm not sure I'd really want them to actually be alive in the game, though NPC's explaining away missing ships as sky whale attacks would fit like a glove.

I dont understand the controversy to making this a reality
It started as a joke during the launch party as something I blurted out in the chat feed, it got noticed, I believe goofy enthusiasm got rolling as paper plates with press x for sky whales started appearing on the feed.  And I just kept pushing it for the lols, before you know it lots of people are tickled by the experience and it mutated into what it is now.  It was also around the time boarding was really getting shot down, so it gave a ridiculous rally point for everyone.

So keep those whale pictures rolling!

So wandering the Internet I decide to look up old oil paintings of military officers.  Find one I like, decide I'll try to freehand it (you have no idea how many times I drew this mans right eye and forhead), before I gave up completely and left the eye a squiggle.

Now how to make it more diesel punk?

You should of seen the braiding on this mans collar, I can't recreate that with my finger, way to much detail.  But a monocle, could swing that.  My artistic skill though never progressed from mimicking what I can see, so I'll have to find a good picture of a monocle.

You can get a wacom drawing stylus for the iPad if you'd prefer that for doing detail like the braided collar. It is pretty cheap too (unlike every other wacom product =P).

A bit more gruff: Sand and sun will age the face. Add crows feet to the corners of the eyes. Cogs never hurt a uniform when you're trying for this kind of thing.

A women covers her face in a Chan-Ning market.  Just a sketch, still experimenting with how much I can do with just my good ole finger stylus.  Wish a pencil would work, has to be able to conduct electricity to work with the iPad screen.  That and using pencil and paper is icky for me, I erase lines way to often.
Really happy with the crane on the dress, was testing how much detail I could put on something, was just gonna leave the squiggles.
Maybe we should have a break away thread for different locales?

So I'm thinking of man-portable radios with receivers placed on the body that a cog-crypto piece could fit in. It would encrypt traffic over the radio according to the specific design of the cog. Could have an "A" set, a "B" set, so on and so forth. Might be fun to have a sketch at.

So your mention of a radio broke my brain when I realized that none of the helmets have one attached to them.
I looked at some old photos of flight helmets and was incorporating it into another sketch.  This is maybe a few minutes into the idea

The simplicity of my current skill level allows me to make pictures fairly rapidly.  That and I'm all digital doesn't take nearly as much skill as Ccracks pencil drawings.
I tend not to like the strictly diesel punk approach to every facet of the world, I like to think that some of the old world still exists to some degree.  Hmm... what to do next.

I am now imagining a Goldfish using its fins to smash into infantry.  I always knew those things were sinister.

Pretty cool sketch.  The only glimpses of ground combat I saw were in that original GoI demo, you have to wonder what role these airships played in the war.  They can't be airplane killers or else there'd be no point in airplanes attacking airships.  We're already acquainted with their utility in airship-to-airship combat, but if the only reason you're building airships is to kill other airships why not just send planes to kill their expensive airships and just not bother?  Troop and supply transport is a pretty obvious use but it's a little boring if its weapons are only meant to serve as deterrents, that'd mean some other machination is the real star of the GoI world.

I'm guessing they normally serve as megabombers, capable of carrying much heavier payloads than these primitive airplanes, capable of leveling entire cities not with one giant flash as with a nuke, but with many, many fires.  Weapons of mass terror, dropping horrible chemicals and fires to destroy not only buildings but torture those poor souls trapped inside, so that they scream and traumatize any unlucky survivors so that they may spread horror stories and destroy their nation's morale.

Every fight in Skirmish is another attempt to both prevent this happening to your people and to inflict this suffering on others.

I know they could be like a quick sweeper on a low pass, sending out hellhound shots down below while flame throwers bake the earth or chain guns shred infantry ranks.

Anyways, random scenes where asked for, I think this counts.  Ah, and a salute for the person who knows what actual picture most of this scene comes from.

Floating support by fire or artillery battery platforms.

Following the reduction of enemy airships, or in the event of their absence otherwise, these airships could be utilized to provide indirect fires, or large bore fires in direct lay, all across the battlefield. This could be useful in reducing enemy defenses, obstacles, and vehicles, but also incredibly useful for lane proofing (mine clearing) operations. Depending on the state of communications during this period, they could also drop a comm line to a rear element, which would allow the rear element to speak directly to the airship itself and relay ground traffic regarding the tactical situation.

Having the ability to provide these sorts of continuous suppression would support ground troops IMMENSELY, as they wouldn't have to worry about getting their own internal support weapons to key terrain in the expeditious fashion that they would otherwise have to. Having this sort of firepower screaming over your shoulder means you advance UNDER your suppression, and you're on top of the enemy before they've really got a chance to orient themselves. Left unchecked, this sort of support could easily end a battle before it began.

It could also supply illumination using the mounted flare gun, in the event of a night assault. Used correctly, these flares could be utilized to illuminate the enemy AND destroy their ability to see in the dark.

The ability of larger vessels to carry smaller aircraft could be used to conduct fast, hit and run style raids on facilities. Depending on the method of insertion, the airships themselves could be the release point for a raid, as well.

And that is why I have the goldfish escorting a pair of blimps while the lines advance under a field of fire.

I imagine well concealed or small, mobile mortar fire would be in high use in this kind of fighting, seeing how each ship would have a sphere of influence that could knock out large emplacements at considerable range.
Weaponry focused on taking them down from the ground would likely be limited to fixed position, mobility of ground to air defense sacrificed in favor of air superiority with controlled lanes of access.

A battle with matched sides would be incredibly violent, fast, and likely inconclusive if neither side could achieve total air superiority.
Title: Re: Fan Art Thread
Post by: Charon on April 07, 2013, 03:24:39 am
Definitely. That would turn nasty fast.

I'd imagine they would try to salvage the weaponry from downed airships to mount them as anti-airship emplacements, like you mentioned above. Wouldn't expect that combat life expectancy to be above 30 seconds from the moment they open up, either.

Saluted!

Oooo...  Could you imagine a downed galleon in the canyons, it's guns hidden under tarps on the ruined ship as another ship flys low under the cloud cover just in range?

Dammit I need some screen shots tomorrow so I can draw this.
Title: Re: Fan Art Thread
Post by: Helmic on April 07, 2013, 03:43:46 am
I bet that would be the common use, it fits the setting so well.  Converting the hull into an impromptu bunker, the guns would probably work just fine as ground artillery with some repairs and salvaged parts from those that can't work anymore.  It'd actually explain a lot of the extraneous parts on these ships, they're there EXPLICITLY to be used when a ship is shot down so that it can be converted into a bunker.
Title: Re: Fan Art Thread
Post by: Charon on April 07, 2013, 03:46:00 am
I'm imagining the wreck/bunker being positioned in the shade of that giant hull in the Burren, getting ready to commence the ambush.

I should also note that I'd imagine getting dropped in the Burren would suck.
Title: Re: Fan Art Thread
Post by: Helmic on April 07, 2013, 03:52:15 am
I'm actually quite surprised there aren't any mentions of chemical warfare.  Nothing signals the decay of society like mustard gas and covering your face with a piss-stained rag, you know these airships won't want to be carrying traditional explosives when the cargo hold is taking so much fire from literally all directions.  Salt the land, poison their water, no wonder the world is such a shithole by the time the game starts.

The dual nature of these airships, cargo transports and heavy weapon platforms and bombers, bringers of both life and death, should have a profound impact on culture.  I can imagine your average Joe in a warzone just fucking hating everyone associated with airships, looking out in the distance and seeing the silhouette of an airship and not knowing whether it's there to send supplies or kill everyone in the most horrible way imaginable.  I can so easily imagine characters getting a God complex flying these machines, knowing that who lives and dies is entirely their choice, and others half going mad knowing that the people they help are probably going to just murder someone just as horribly.

So I have no patience and I took a screen shot from the web along with one of some iron sights off the side of a ship and a bunch of ones of canyons from the bottom, cobbled it somewhat lazily together and here is where I'm at, the color sampling phase.

Title: Re: Fan Art Thread
Post by: Lord Dick Tim on April 07, 2013, 05:44:54 am
Could you imagine it?  They would have sound powered radios strung along the wreck, with dust covered tarps over the guns, charcoal smudged over all the bright works and would keep the guns in a fixed position until an enemy ship entered multiple vectors at once and Poof!  Off come the tarps as firing teams unleash a hail of fire at point blank range from multiple locations in a tight spot of the canyon.
Title: Re: Fan Art Thread
Post by: Charon on April 07, 2013, 06:59:29 am
All dialed in with makeshift T&Es, ambush kicked off by a closed-bolt weapon, with all open bolt systems following directly afterward. Fireteams with man-portable rocket systems engaging from the cliffside, with a dynamic rope laid in for immediate egress. Sharpshooters on the deck aiming for manned positions, but it's a deceptively far shot, so much of their time will be spent ranging out the target with their individual small arms. Maybe some asshole puts a flare into the side of the vessel in an attempt to blind the pilot.

I have a picture in my head of a carronade-squid flying above the enemy ranks wiping out plantoons.

And those hwatchas.

Actually, airships seem like they would be built to kill ground troops effectively.

It would probably be their initial design, to be honest.
Title: Re: Fan Art Thread
Post by: HamsterIV on April 08, 2013, 03:36:28 pm
I was thinking about a heavy flack galleon providing artillery support for ground troops. Considering how non existent the road network is in the game world, I can see how airships could replace road transportation as the preferred method of moving big guns from battle field to battle field. The infantry can still walk since the human foot was designed to overcome rough terrain, supported by airship supply drops of course.

This would be an interesting addition to adventure mode, specialty air to ground weapons that would be less effective against fast moving air targets but would have range/power to engage ground targets.

Post by: Charon on April 08, 2013, 04:32:31 pm
I've been thinking of doing a story since we met Lord Dick Tim in the Tavern back there, called "Hell at Angel's Head". It would be a community operation against brigand forces that have overtaken a "Glintspire" at Angel's Head, a large mountain in the lower right hand corner of the map.

We were thinking of an airship insertion about 500 meters out using a squid, with a pair of galleons and goldfish/pyra escorts masking their profile with the terrain while a foot-mobile team splashed with a diesel powered twin engine raft. They'd use this to hit the beach at the foot of angel's head, and then conduct movement to the top of Angel's Head while the Galleons moved into position to provide fire support on any target marked by flare. They'd be using these flare-revolvers to mark targets on the way up, and semi-automatic rifles to engage the enemy. Once at the top, they'd retake the glintspire (basically an awesome lighthouse) and use it to bring the supporting ships in.

Also in the area would be enemy mining operations that could be seized in follow on missions, or destroyed with explosives.

I just haven't really put the time in to make the thing a reality.

That's some damn fine skills Ccrack
to get the image in the thread you can click the image copy, the URL of the picture and put it in between [img][ /img] (note that I put an extra space not to active it) code
as such
[img]https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=126.0;attach=287;image[ /img]
(though the other people use various websites to upload their images, for example imgur or imageshack, where as you upload it directly as an attachment with the forums and thus you get the attachment under the post. You can still post it regularily this way though)

EDIT: and Hamster, that's one nasty rat +1

So advertising has existed even as far back as ancient rome. I'm sure the people in Guns of Icarus are familiar with it, but what would they advertise...

i'll never forgive lenzs for putting THAT drawing as the logo. . . but i have to admit i got a good laugh seeing it in this fan art. . . but seriously who puts a "evil lawyer cow" as a logo for beer *Shakes fist at lenz*. . .

I bring you: The finest in Cheap personalized aerial transport, The Saltston Mark 1.
The very first factory-line airship. Your saltston has in fact, never seen a shipyard!
Costs less than your average Kinforth apartment! No guarrantees, Ensurance not included.

I never noticed it was a cow until I looked closely at the reference screenshot I took so I could redraw it. I'm curious as to the background behind the "brand" design. =P

pretty much the muse art team does 20 minute art exercises ranging from quick paintings in photoshop to zbrushing. usually we pick a random theme, in a random way. . . one month or so we ended up simply having 3 people shouting out words at random and then we'd do what ever we came from it. . . more or less the 3 words where cow, lawyer, and i believe destruction or evil? and to be honest, the cow was probably my worst worst drawing cause i started off drawing a phoenix wright cow, looked over at lenz screen and realized he was doing the same thing. . so changed it up half way. the full picture was alot more. . . umm. . violent lets say >>. . .  either way while lenz was making those bottles he needed a logo, and branded it after me. . . . and for what ever mysterious reason? he picked the cow. why? god knows . . .

doing dozens of 20 minute art exercises with random themes is a really really good way to practice. i consider those exercises as the source of how much better i am at doing art then when i started working at muse, and would love to see what comes out of people doing guns of icarus themed 20 minute fan arts ;p  (maybe something more specific though then just "guns of icarus". . .)

Perhaps a similar thing could be started on the gallery forum (if there is the interest) where once a week or more, a theme using is picked using some random words and then people have to make some quick fanart based on those words. It might even encourage people to draw who might otherwise not give it a try.

And I bet there would be some hilarious stuff too with the right mix of random words.

Riot Runner Asteria, the Starry-Eyed Engineer I do see her having plaster bandages on her face a lot since she works with airships and it involves lots of dangerous things... Like fire! So much fire...

This isn't a real refined drawing of mine. More scribbly and draft-like (you can tell it's draft mode when there are no defined hands) with lots of anatomical issues. I did most of this from memory and a lot of it is more just basic shapes. I'll probably redraw portions of this once I'm not in school since the fact that most of the tools are just shapes and not really tools.

I did take liberties with how the character carries their tools (holster for Chem Spray, tool belt for Pipe Wrench and Buff Hammer) etc. So it's definitely not accurate.

some of this stuff is pretty impressive.

I might try and dig up some of the stuff I was working on, it doesn't have to be good to be fanart, right? ^^

It's great to see some fanart from more people. Makes me want to draw something new! We still need more from you all though. With enough people we could give that three-word challenge another go!

Riot Runner Asteria, the Starry-Eyed Engineer I do see her having plaster bandages on her face a lot since she works with airships and it involves lots of dangerous things... Like fire! So much fire...

Asteria Bisset-!! I really like your girl engi ! that's the ideal engi I always have in my mind, looks very positive and active X)!!!!!Great clean up line work too!!!

Piemanlives- yeah.. haha I only view posts I dont usually speak up in the forum. I used to do a lot of fan art myself, I hope to see more and more GOI fan art coming out!!><

Backgrounds are screeshots from the game.

I love your style. Looks like badass characters from Borderlands <3

I have a theory, that this thread is for 1-2 pictures. Like, people who love spamming trash sketches (like me), create their own threads.

Hue definitely needs his own gallery

Depends on who you're flying with really. Also, lobbies are fun too.
Title: Re: Fan Art Thread
Post by: Queso on August 25, 2014, 02:16:12 pm
Since we are already veering waaaay off topic, I'd argue that the diagram (other than the lobbies) is the diagram of a well paced game. Constant action is bad pacing.
Title: Re: Fan Art Thread
Post by: HamsterIV on August 25, 2014, 03:55:03 pm
"Fun" should be replaced with "intensity" the entire experience is fun but intensity peaks and drops with the flow of the game. Being a well timed mallet hit away from death only has meaning if you are not always a well timed mallet hit away from death.

The squid has a lot of geometry and I applaud you for rendering it at this angle. Some of the rigging is missing but I those ropes would interferer with the composition. I like how you render the back in soft focus to draw attention to the part of the ship you want to focus on.
