I'm actually quite surprised there aren't any mentions of chemical warfare.  Nothing signals the decay of society like mustard gas and covering your face with a piss-stained rag, you know these airships won't want to be carrying traditional explosives when the cargo hold is taking so much fire from literally all directions.  Salt the land, poison their water, no wonder the world is such a shithole by the time the game starts.

The dual nature of these airships, cargo transports and heavy weapon platforms and bombers, bringers of both life and death, should have a profound impact on culture.  I can imagine your average Joe in a warzone just fucking hating everyone associated with airships, looking out in the distance and seeing the silhouette of an airship and not knowing whether it's there to send supplies or kill everyone in the most horrible way imaginable.  I can so easily imagine characters getting a God complex flying these machines, knowing that who lives and dies is entirely their choice, and others half going mad knowing that the people they help are probably going to just murder someone just as horribly.

We have a dark outlook on this world, and I agree with everything you said helmic.

So I have no patience and I took a screen shot from the web along with one of some iron sights off the side of a ship and a bunch of ones of canyons from the bottom, cobbled it somewhat lazily together and here is where I'm at, the color sampling phase.

The squid has a lot of stuff on it by the way.

@Helmic: Makes pretty perfect sense there, if you ask me. Imagine what would be done to any crew member caught by ground forces.

@Lord Dick Tim: Your picture is torturing me. I want to see this ambush go down.

Could you imagine it?  They would have sound powered radios strung along the wreck, with dust covered tarps over the guns, charcoal smudged over all the bright works and would keep the guns in a fixed position until an enemy ship entered multiple vectors at once and Poof!  Off come the tarps as firing teams unleash a hail of fire at point blank range from multiple locations in a tight spot of the canyon.

All dialed in with makeshift T&Es, ambush kicked off by a closed-bolt weapon, with all open bolt systems following directly afterward. Fireteams with man-portable rocket systems engaging from the cliffside, with a dynamic rope laid in for immediate egress. Sharpshooters on the deck aiming for manned positions, but it's a deceptively far shot, so much of their time will be spent ranging out the target with their individual small arms. Maybe some asshole puts a flare into the side of the vessel in an attempt to blind the pilot.

Ah chem weapons would be quite spectacular. I remember some cool ideas on the old forum about laying clouds of poison gas around the map. Hrm, I guess we have tar cloud but it's not as cool.

Nice infantry picture btw

I have a picture in my head of a carronade-squid flying above the enemy ranks wiping out plantoons.

And those hwatchas.

Actually, airships seem like they would be built to kill ground troops effectively.

It would probably be their initial design, to be honest.

I was thinking about a heavy flack galleon providing artillery support for ground troops. Considering how non existent the road network is in the game world, I can see how airships could replace road transportation as the preferred method of moving big guns from battle field to battle field. The infantry can still walk since the human foot was designed to overcome rough terrain, supported by airship supply drops of course.

This would be an interesting addition to adventure mode, specialty air to ground weapons that would be less effective against fast moving air targets but would have range/power to engage ground targets.

I've been thinking of doing a story since we met Lord Dick Tim in the Tavern back there, called "Hell at Angel's Head". It would be a community operation against brigand forces that have overtaken a "Glintspire" at Angel's Head, a large mountain in the lower right hand corner of the map.

We were thinking of an airship insertion about 500 meters out using a squid, with a pair of galleons and goldfish/pyra escorts masking their profile with the terrain while a foot-mobile team splashed with a diesel powered twin engine raft. They'd use this to hit the beach at the foot of angel's head, and then conduct movement to the top of Angel's Head while the Galleons moved into position to provide fire support on any target marked by flare. They'd be using these flare-revolvers to mark targets on the way up, and semi-automatic rifles to engage the enemy. Once at the top, they'd retake the glintspire (basically an awesome lighthouse) and use it to bring the supporting ships in.

Also in the area would be enemy mining operations that could be seized in follow on missions, or destroyed with explosives.

I just haven't really put the time in to make the thing a reality.

Guns of Icarus has always has a hot rod vibe to it. Crazy engineers make awesome vehicles out of whatever scrap they find then pit them head to head. So in honor of GOI and Ed "Big Daddy" Roth I present "Rat Fink on a Squid."

If any one wants to color it, I can send them a higher res copy. PM me your email address and I will forward it to you. Color had never been my strong suit.
