Gameplay / Re: Reagan's Star Wars, or Shooting Down Projectiles
« on: November 21, 2014, 06:45:41 am »
Now I'm interested to see a Hwacha Galleon fight. I wonder if opposing Hwacha fires would reduce the effectiveness of both Hwachas.
I've done it a couple of times.

If you have Heavy Clip and the other Galleon doesn't, you win if you keep your distance. If you get in close with Burst while the enemy still has Heavy Clip loaded, you win. If you get shots on their Hwachas before they have you in their own arcs, you win. The fires don't matter as much as a solid volley being enough to disable the guns.

At least, that's my experience. YMMV.

I'm the so called Demon, I'm a more then a average "gamer" (not to brag ofc).

I was *SO* ready to expect the worst after reading this line...

Thanks for proving me wrong :D

I could sit and poke holes in your use of the English language, but we're not here for that. We're here because this game is AWESOME. And I'm glad you're loving it too. Welcome to the party. I'm a bit of an intermittent player myself, but stick around a while and you'll probably run into me occasionally. I look forward to fighting alongside and/or against you sometime in the future.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Spotting reflector

Problem with this is...it doesn't change the fact that all you need to do is target the guy with the big bright laser beam of sunlight shining at you. Unless what you do is give it a blinding effect for the entire crew. Think Awesomenauts blinding where the screen darkens on the sides but gets bright in the middle.

Course, this would be insanely annoying to other teams and you can bet it would get used a lot. Unless it worked on a long cooldown. Could also make this as functionality of the flare gun, give it some usefulness besides high stack fires and cloud spotting. Forces people to look away to recover sight.

What I was thinking was a flash from your ship that's only visible to people looking in your direction, then it fades, and for a decent duration AFTER the flash is gone, the target is immune to spotting from anyone on board your ship.

The advantages are that it removes a spot if one was made from the ship the mirror is used on, and that it prevents that entire crew from spotting you again for a limited duration. The disadvantages are that you have to target the ship you're countering the spot on, you can't be manning a gun or repairing while you're blinding them, and you give away your immediate position if anyone is looking in exchange for having your future position somewhat better-concealed.

That said, the decoy balloon sounds like it could also be a good idea.

Seems more like it would work as a weapon or unique equipment type than a piloting tool though.

Gameplay / Re: Forgoing a Firefighting Tool
« on: November 19, 2014, 10:16:04 pm »
I can imagine with the right build of a Squid, it might be possible to get away with a single engi for firefighting (Wrench/Extinguisher/Chemspray lol). Maybe - MAYBE - for a Goldfish too. Any other ship, and you want at least 2 Engineers to have firefighting tools.

Obviously, if there's a gunner on your ship, this means no engineers should be running without firefighting tools. On a ship with 3 (or 4) Engineers, having one (maybe 2) crew members with no firefighting ability is a little more viable. Even then, the flexibility of having both repair and fighting tools is hard to pass up when you have an Engineer. Even 3 crew members can't be everywhere at once, and if you happen to be the guy next to a burning part of the ship, you might end up wishing you were one of the firefighters...

Why not making a piloting tool that works kind of like the spyglass. If you're looking at an enemy ship, you can use a mirror to reflect light towards the enemy who has spotted you and negate their spot.

Obviously, if two enemies can see your ship and you don't know who it was that spotted you, it's a bit of a "luck of the draw" situation where you don't know who to aim for. You'd need to spend a second or so focused on the ship with the mirror selected and the button held down before the spot fully vanishes, much like how it takes time to break a spot when you go behind cloud cover.

Advantage: you can immediately remove an enemy spot from your ship. It could also prevent spotting for a short duration after.
Drawback: It requires a crew member to devote time and effort to identifying the spotter and negating them, and can be undone by a second ship spotting you as well.

This would give non-pilots a tool other than the spyglass that's worth using, and would add another "stealth" technique to the game with its own limitations. They could also make it so that using the mirror would cause a bright flash to be visible, so while it makes you able to vanish, it would somewhat reveal your initial location while doing so.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Balance problem - metamidion
« on: November 19, 2014, 08:37:06 pm »
A metamidion without Phoenix claw is a dead midion... A pilot who does not use his claw is a dead midion... So maybe Phoenix Claw should nerfed? :)

Fixed that for you.

Also, was just coming here to check things out because I've missed GoIO lately.

Got dragged into Destiny for a while on my PS3, got bored and went back to Armored Core, XCOM and a couple of Dynasty Warriors games I picke dup cheap, then got Alien Isolation for PC. I have a tendency to jump from game to game a lot, and lately I've been more on a console gaming binge. Really need to get back to the game, and doesn't look like too much has changed to make the game seem unfamiliar.

So have they really not done anything about the Claw yet? I'm a little surprised to see that still being mentioned in an active conversation as something at least borderline OP. Not that I ever use it myself, but... I'm a bit crazy. And what I do... works for all the wrong reasons :P

Gameplay / Re: Heatsink: Good or Bad?

Last time I actually looked at the stats, heatsink ammo also had a turn speed buff.

Was useful to keep gats on target against a fast-moving Squid at close range. When fast-moving close range Squids are usually armed with Flamers, that's double the bonus.

Gameplay / Re: It's The Clawwwwwww!

I'm usually piloting a Junker or Galleon.

Junker already has excellent turning, and a mostly long-range Galleon can usually get away without the need for high turn speed.

As such, I find that not taking the claw is less of a liability on my preferred ships.

I can't confidently say that it isn't a great tool, or even one of the best, but I don't feel gimped by my decision to usually run other tools in its place.

What if you took the lowest damage modifier between balloon-armor or balloon-hull and applied that to the damage being done to the armor or hull?

So Carronade destroys the balloon. Normally a gatling shooting the balloon would have piercing modifier on armor and the damage would be dealt to the armor. The change would be that the gatling instead has a modifier as if it were shooting the balloon, but it still deals damage to the armor.

A Carronade hitting a dead balloon would have a modifier as if it were shooting the armor (since it deals less damage to armor) and deals the damage to the armor.

Basically you can still aim at the balloon, but it gives you the lowest possible damage modifier between the balloon and what you are actually damaging.

This could also be applied to other components?

I'm just going to suggest this option as an awesome one - although it might be hard to code, and a simple reduced damage transferrance might be more practical.

General Discussion / Re: What exactly is "hull"...
« on: September 05, 2014, 04:09:51 pm »
The term "hull armour" can be shortened to "hull" slightly more easily than it can be to "armour" (one syllable instead of two). Under the armour, your hull durability doesn't seem to get much shorter when called durability, and there isn't an efficient and popular short-hand for that word. As such, "hull" makes much more sense to use there. This means that, viewed alone, both would seem best-suited to "hull" as their short form. Given the more extreme variance on hull durability, I'm inclined to run with calling that "hull" and referring to hull armour as "armour".

But that's just me. Lots of people don't clarify what they're talking about and yell "HULL" in a panicked voice, so you can easily assume whichever meaning you would personally use - whether that be "hull armour is down, needs repair" or "hull durability is dropping, needs armour"

So basically, you're building a Minecraft world and using it as a map for a map-based GoIO campaign?

Sounds like a crazy idea. I like it!

Just FYI, greased does the same total damage as normal, with the caveat that it expends the clip faster.

That is the only benefit of greased rounds.
Increased DPS means less delay before the explosions start eating hull instead of armour.

Gatling BY ITSELF is a pretty weak gun because it can't hurt much other than armour.

Gatling in a bifecta with anything capable of significant hull damage is absolutely devastating.

Can we name it the Bigger, Badder Wolf?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN_N_J1yx-U

It did all the right things to earn the name.

(NOTE: I do not approve of my proposal for the name. Please do not listen to me)

Instead of damaging balloon over time, make it double damage taken from fire stacks.

That makes sense when you cover your balloon in a flammable substance, right?

Quad Hwacha/dual Carousel Galleon = Fireworks Display.

The only time I've seen it was during the 4th of July weekend when it was my ship of choice. And we shot an Icecream Cone.
