Or maybe the key you use to check FPS and all that could show the number of people online?

If I remember correctly, in game, you set it to full screen. Then in your steam library, right click GoI and then go to properties, set launch options, and then put in -popupwindow and it should work
You're right about the -popupwindow part in the launch options, but first you have to set your game to windowed mode in-game.
