Title: Matchmaking hard at work.
Post by: Richard LeMoon on October 29, 2014, 10:59:32 pm
Unedited, not set up. We joined via matchmaking to see a gunner captain with one pilot on his crew. Within seconds, two more pilots filled his crew.  (http://i.imgur.com/TIlLdTX.jpg)

The matchmaker probably thought, "really? A gunner captain? Against lvl 40+ enemies? Screw this, nothing I can do, so I'll just dump any extra pilots who have nowhere to go onto that ship because it's doomed anyway..."

This has been my average experience with match making. It is like the game is going "Lets see if you can fight your way out of this sucka." Fun fact I can't.

Does the matchmaker throw pilots onto ships that have non-pilot captains?  I saw that happen today and was confused because Muse INSISTS that it isn't possible for matchmaking to drop pilots into crew slots, and they claim that this only happens due to people switching class once they are in the lobby... but unless they are so LIGHTNING FAST that I can't even see them switch, they are wrong....

It DOES put non-pilots in the captain slot. I have had it happen to me personally as an engineer. After which, it filled my ship with pilots. Also, that first screenshot was taken as those people were placed, AS pilots. They did not change after they joined.

Who can see what is wrong with my last screenshot, aside from the engineer captain?

I can agree, it placed me into a crew slot as a pilot once.

Matchmaking try #2:

No class switching happened. I watched as these extra gunners joined.

The matchmaker uses powder monkey logic. "Oh look a ship with a engineer pilot! I should join as a pilot that isn't in the captain slot!. They'll love me for that!"

More the merrier... It does not look very pretty on the surface at the moment.

Is it that it matchmade you into a completely full lobby with no slots available?

Close, sparklerfiish. That screenshot was taken after a minute of looking at ship loadouts quick to see what I was dealing with. There were about five spots open on a few ships. More players joined as I was doing this, and I suddenly realized that I did not see a blue name on any ship, thinking that the highlight was broken. There were still a few empty slots (two captain slots, actually), so I asked if anyone could see me on those ships. Maybe I just was not showing up? Nope. The last slots filled and I took the screenshot.

The match then proceeded to start without me, leaving me looking at the lobby as if I have joined a running match on a friend. Eventually, one of the pilots quit and I was able to take his ship.

So, basically, it put me in the lobby without actually putting me in the lobby.

I suppose it's not a problem with the matchmaker per se, but I had a similarly bizarre experience today when I was placed on a newbie ship with engineer captain and pilot crew, which I quickly ditched during the countdown when I received a game invite from a friend.  Joined my friend, was happily playing the match when I was suddenly dropped from the match and appeared on the ship that I had previously escaped in the first lobby.

All three useless crewmates (gunner with buff hammer, engineer captain who stayed on a flamethrower and never repaired anything, and level 2 non-captain pilot) all proceeded to ragequit within a couple minutes.  Thanks for forcibly removing me from the match I wanted to be in to enforce me starting in the match I tried to escape?

Had a pretty amusing game yesterday where I was match-made on MasterODZaster's ship into Raid on Refinery, the average level of all other players in the lobby between 2 and 6. We proceeded to move from point to point capping them and win the game without firing a single shot or bumping into the enemy once.

Richard THIS SAME THING happened to me last night! I was in crew formation with a friend and they added us to a lobby with only 3 slots open but none of those slots on the same ship and Wandering was a pilot yet put him in a non pilot spot, making 2 pilots on 1 ship. AND I was a "ghost" in the lobby. Wasn't on any of the ships and wasn't in spectator.

Not even going to post the screenshots, but it happened to me again, twice in a row. First another 4v4, then a 2v2. Can also confirm that match chat does not work in this strange Limbo.

Happened to me twice today.
Same state that happens when you join a lobby that's in progress before picking a ship.

All the skill won't matter in the world if you always lose because you get placed within a team filled with levels less than 10 who are absolutely inexperienced.

I'm not sure if it's the constantly losing games that keeps sticking me down into rooms with lower levels or because it's the system being nonsensical. Yeah, one guy on the other team is a lvl 45 captain so I get put in there as an high level engineer because everyone else is low level. Balanced, right.

Was trying to get a proper match started so created a custom lobby invited all my friends. We had 3 spots that we needed filled when we opened the match up to the que after sometime we still hadn't had anyone from que join, to the point we asked if we even had opened it to the que (we had indeed), so I went back to my friends list and got 2 more friends who by that time had ended their match and jumped in. The ONLY person that was sent into out lobby from que...yep...a level 1

He probably won 1 game and thus his winrate and skill rating skyrocketed into infinity and beyond, making him more than suitable for a balanced match like this. Or most of the better players just don't bother being matchmade into any lobby anymore.

I'm gonna wager this is the more likely culprit.  I don't use the matchmaker at all anymore, only friend join and crewform.

That was a good time in-spite of getting my rear handed to me every match. It gave me a good idea of what competitive play feels like. The screen shot looks like one of the first matches we played. Soon after the game crashed for a few players and their slots were replaced by low levels from the queue.

Yes, I think this was the very first match we played. And Yes Sparkler I think most high level players are just using custom match making now...only if 1 more person would have accepted my invite.

Well... I was playing with Roland today. We both joined the crew formation. We started looking for a new match, aaaaaand... After five minutes we stumble upon one.

What was wrong?

We were split; he was on the ship as captain, and I was on ship of the enemy team.

Dafuq matchmaker?

My frustration knows no bounds. How do you even miss with a flamethrower?!?

*sigh* *forever teaching mode activated*

Roland was extremely livid today because of a guy who shot full barrage of hwacha rocket from point blank distance... destroying only ONE engine.

This happened to me yesterday!  We had a ship of four people and ended up split between the teams.

Found a great use for the matchmaker today - I decided to begin grinding the finally nerfed teaching achievements. After loosing a few games by moving my self repeatedly onto ships full of the greener-than-green newbies who've just bought the game on sale - I could taste my glicko rating plummeting. Now, I don't even need to move myself I've reached the golden situation where it'll place me on a crew with 3 people below lvl 12 without fail - I'll have finished all the achieves I need by the end of the week! =)

I did warn about how easy manipulation of the ratings would be. Though..... why does it keep sticking me with paste-eaters?

Sometimes... that paste is airplane glue.

This has happened to me before as well. I couldn't click out of it and I was stuck forcing me to leave the room and come back.

I couldn't click anywhere and nothing would work so i rebooted. I'm pretty sure that's what happened.

But what we did was i was engi in a pilot slot, whilst melon searched for a game as a pilot.

Match maker really hates that xD
