Matchmaking hard at work.
« on: October 29, 2014, 10:59:32 pm »
Unedited, not set up. We joined via matchmaking to see a gunner captain with one pilot on his crew. Within seconds, two more pilots filled his crew.

The matchmaker probably thought, "really? A gunner captain? Against lvl 40+ enemies? Screw this, nothing I can do, so I'll just dump any extra pilots who have nowhere to go onto that ship because it's doomed anyway..."

This has been my average experience with match making. It is like the game is going "Lets see if you can fight your way out of this sucka." Fun fact I can't.

Does the matchmaker throw pilots onto ships that have non-pilot captains?  I saw that happen today and was confused because Muse INSISTS that it isn't possible for matchmaking to drop pilots into crew slots, and they claim that this only happens due to people switching class once they are in the lobby... but unless they are so LIGHTNING FAST that I can't even see them switch, they are wrong....

It DOES put non-pilots in the captain slot. I have had it happen to me personally as an engineer. After which, it filled my ship with pilots. Also, that first screenshot was taken as those people were placed, AS pilots. They did not change after they joined.

Who can see what is wrong with my last screenshot, aside from the engineer captain?

I can agree, it placed me into a crew slot as a pilot once.

Matchmaking try #2:

No class switching happened. I watched as these extra gunners joined.

The matchmaker uses powder monkey logic. "Oh look a ship with a engineer pilot! I should join as a pilot that isn't in the captain slot!. They'll love me for that!"

More the merrier... It does not look very pretty on the surface at the moment.

Is it that it matchmade you into a completely full lobby with no slots available?

Close, sparklerfiish. That screenshot was taken after a minute of looking at ship loadouts quick to see what I was dealing with. There were about five spots open on a few ships. More players joined as I was doing this, and I suddenly realized that I did not see a blue name on any ship, thinking that the highlight was broken. There were still a few empty slots (two captain slots, actually), so I asked if anyone could see me on those ships. Maybe I just was not showing up? Nope. The last slots filled and I took the screenshot.

The match then proceeded to start without me, leaving me looking at the lobby as if I have joined a running match on a friend. Eventually, one of the pilots quit and I was able to take his ship.

So, basically, it put me in the lobby without actually putting me in the lobby.

I suppose it's not a problem with the matchmaker per se, but I had a similarly bizarre experience today when I was placed on a newbie ship with engineer captain and pilot crew, which I quickly ditched during the countdown when I received a game invite from a friend.  Joined my friend, was happily playing the match when I was suddenly dropped from the match and appeared on the ship that I had previously escaped in the first lobby.

All three useless crewmates (gunner with buff hammer, engineer captain who stayed on a flamethrower and never repaired anything, and level 2 non-captain pilot) all proceeded to ragequit within a couple minutes.  Thanks for forcibly removing me from the match I wanted to be in to enforce me starting in the match I tried to escape?
