Giant lead glass canisters lobbed into the air that break on a ship, the liquid when hitting the air exploding into flames.
That's pretty diesel punk I think.
An on-board catapult that launches jars of white phosphorus?

Huh, I always imagined it as a Greek Fire sort of thing with bellows and not really much azimuth travel.

Instead of the oil floating on water, we could have burning tar floating in the air... though that might be a bit OP and preformance heavy

I wasn't thinking anything persistent.  Just the concept of some animal head spewing forth massive amounts of fire, rather than Molotov cocktails of science.
