I was thinking Pyras would be pawns since they are first in the fight, there a lot of them, and they die easily. They are also one of the smallest ships.

Bishops are fast and fight by flanking, and you use them to lure your foe into traps, so Squid or Goldfish.

Knights move forward a few spaces then kill from the side, which resembles a Junker.

Spire or Mobula makes a good Rook, since both are known as 'castle' types. Both of them would also make a good Queen due to their sheer amount of firepower focused in one direction over short or long ranges. I would rather see the Spire as Queen, though, due to the size (queen is always the tallest piece), and Mobula as Rook, due to the flat, castle-like deck.

I'm in agreement with Richard too, especially since the pyra was nerfed...
Easy to crew, easy to take off the board, expendable but useful if used correctly.

I would make the Spire or Mobula the king since the entire other team usually tries to kill them first.

The junker should be the queen since it is the most versatile ship you would still send into a brawl.

Goldfish are rooksBishops, because they are good at fast attack and flanking but lack the option available to some ships.

Squids are knights, they can only be effective if the target is slightly off from center. They can work their way into places that other ships can't. There is also no way to use them effectively at long range.

The Galleon is the rook as it is solid defense, but its mobility tends to be hampered by what is around it.

The Pyra is the pawn because they die really easily despite and probably because of their popularity in the early game.

Edit: thanks MightyKeb

Goldfish are Bishops,

Fixed it for you?

Good one overall, by the way.
