Competition Concept
« on: January 25, 2016, 05:19:12 pm »
General Overview
For a couple months, I have had an idea for a competitive event. I have put off writing down this event for the entire time, until just recently when a clan member pointed out an event with a similar main idea. So, I decided to revise my idea and write it down. I want to make it clear that this idea is simply a concept.

This event would consist of three stages. Each stage is run in a different format with different rank formats. Players will sign up as a crew, and will be assigned one or two other crews to play with. The reason for this is that it is a lot easier to get 3 other players to play together than it is to get 7 others.

The preliminary stage is a 3v3 league. Each teams will play 3 matches, one of each gamemode, for each week. My original idea is to run this stage for one week. The leaderboard in this stage is based on each game's score. The winner of a match will receive 7 points, while the losing team will receive points equal to the amount of points they receive, scaled down. Examples for this and a better explanation can be viewed on the Google Doc. The top two-thirds (or close, depending the amount of teams signed up), would advance to the main stage.

The main stage is a 2v2 best of 2 league format. Don't worry, this does work. If a team wins both of their matches, they receive 3 points on the leaderboard, and the losing team receives 0 points. If each team wins a match, they all receive 1 point.

The final stage is a round-robin between the main stage crews with the 4 highest scores.

If you would like a more in-depth view of each stage and some sample calculations, click here.

Possible Change Ideas
Since writing down my original idea, I have thought of several ideas to alter this competition, which will be listed below:
  • Selecting team mates for preliminary stage.
  • Finalists selecting another crew from the eliminated crews to partner with for a finals tournament bracket.
  • Increase the length of the preliminary stage, and decrease length of the main stage.
  • Swap the order of the main and preliminary stages.
  • Completely eliminate the preliminary or main stage.
If the preliminary stage were to be eliminated from the competition, the event would be a 2v2 league. with the same format as the main stage. The only difference would be in team selection. Teams have one of three options when signing up: sign up as a full team (2 ships), sign up as a single ship and selecting another signed up, or random teammate selection. Once selected, teams would be final. The final stage would be a double elimination tournament of the top four teams.
If the main stage is eliminated, the event would be a 3v3 league with the same format as the preliminary stage. During each week of play, two rounds will be played as deathmatches, and one round will be either crazy king or king of the hill, each on alternating weeks. Teams will sign us as a single ship, and will be randomly matched together for week one. For the rest of the weeks, I can either continue to assign them randomly or create a program that will match them in a systematic way.

If you have made it all the way through this, I thank you. If you have any thoughts on this tournament, whether it be a suggestion, a change or a question, please do not hesitate to post a reply or PM me. I am quite new to competitive Guns of Icarus, so I welcome any ideas.

I don't see how this is different than Chronos Leauge

Seems needlessly complicated to me.

Maybe try your hand at running a solid event with a standard structure before deciding you're going to re-invent the wheel.

I know it isn't much different with the independent crew sign up. This is why I am posting the concept, to find out what is "too similar".

Anyways, to answer your question: This concept is very similar, but with a 3v3 element and different leaderboard rankings. I notice that most competitive events are focused around 2v2 gameplay, and I would really like to see some 3v3 as well. I know that it would be extremely difficult for most people to coordinate a full 3-ship team, hence why I mentioned the individual ship sign up.
As for the 2v2 stage, I like the mechanic of a draw (or tie, choose your word), and wanted to figure out a way to implement it. Because I wanted to pitch this idea as a single event. Again, I decided to pitch this idea as a single-crew, because it is easier to get together a single crew than two crews.
Also, the rule list is heavily inspired by Cronus League. I went through the rule lists of the major events I could find, and wrote down the rules I considered "the best".

Right now, I am leaning heavily to removing the main stage and running this as a 3v3-only event, in which case I believe the individual ship sign up to be easiest for the players signing up.

Seems needlessly complicated to me.

Maybe try your hand at running a solid event with a standard structure before deciding you're going to re-invent the wheel.

I am just trying to "keep things interesting". With a standard tournament, the SCS, happening every weekend, I can't really see an entirely standard event being too popular. I am trying to combat this by having a unique system of scoring, but I realize the multiple stages might be too much.

I have done some altering of the competition. I now believe that I had addressed the concerns voiced previously.

It is now a standard league format with teams consisting of 3 ships each. It will last for 7 weeks, with two to three matches per team each week. The table will be ranked according to the amount of points the team gets in the game. It will be primarily deathmatches, in which case a team's kills will be added to the table, and in the other gamemodes, the score will be scaled down where the maximum score is equal to 7.

I have also gotten another idea. Beginning at week 2 and lasting until week 6, the bottom teams will be eliminated from the competition. I am simply posting this as an idea, and would like to know whether or not I should actually add this to the event. I have polled a couple people, but my small control group most likely does not accurately reflect the whole of the community.

The final matter over which I have thought is sign-ups. Because I feel that many people would not be able to have three complete ships to sign up with, once sign ups open, teams with any amount of ships will be accepted, and will then be able to select crews to fill up their team, and any remaining ships will be randomly assigned teams. Teams will remain the same for the entirety of the competition.
