Why do science fiction universes ever show the robot overlords caring for humanity like grown children care for their doddering old parents?

What went wrong in the Matrix series?

It tried to explain its own lore. That cannon lore is never be as cool as the lore the viewer will imagine for it, especially when the first installment had a complete narrative arc that left the viewer at a satisfying conclusion.
How did the Marvel movies avoid this trap?
Carn:
It drew from​established lore in the comic's which was heavily entrenched in the psyche's of it's fanbase. Along with the teasers at the endings which link them all together.
How often are derailed threads actually banished to the Pit?
