Sunday Community Skirmish #39 (Signups for Sunday 22th February)
« on: February 16, 2015, 06:06:55 pm »

Sunday Community Skirmish on Facebook
The Sunday Community Skirmish is a single elimination tournament event that runs every week with occasional breaks. All matches are 2v2, time limited best of 3s and are normally streamed live on Twitch. Any team of sufficient size is welcome to participate.

This signup thread is for the Skirmish at 8pm UTC on Sunday 22nd February (example: Britain is currently on UTC) The event is normally streamed by Fourth Oracle, as well as other streamers who vary from week to week. The details of all streams will be made clear on the day of the event.
The event follows a 2v2 deathmatch, single elimination, best of 3 format and has a runtime of approximately 2-4 hours. Teams should consist of 8 players - please only sign up if you are confident of your ability to turn up with a full team.

Signups should be posted in this thread and include a Steam/Skype contact and team name. Signups close at midnight (UTC) on Friday the 20th of February. Please try to avoid last minute signups.
The bracket and map rolls will be available soon after signups close. (brackets at http://goiocommunity.challonge.com/)
Participants will be contacted when their matches are starting, although it's encouraged to consult the bracket and keep track of the streams so you have a decent idea of when you will be playing.

Time Limit Rules
Every match has a base time limit of 15 minutes. However each Bo3 has a "reserve" time of 10 minutes; if a match runs past 15 minutes it will draw on the reserve time for that Bo3. If a match passes 15 minutes and all reserve time has been expended, it will end immediately.
If a match is left tied by this system the effective winner of the match will be decided by a coin toss. Scores will still be recorded as they were for posterity. This should ensure a Bo3 is never left tied.

Teams are allowed 5 minutes of lobby time after their game is scheduled to start. In a situation where a team do not make a fair attempt to be ready within this span it may be counted as a forfeit depending on whether the event is already running behind schedule.

Substitution/Disconnect Rules:
  • Nobody may play for more than one team on the same day.
  • The match referee is authorised to call pauses and allow substitutions midmatch at their own discretion. A guideline is about 2 pauses/substitutions per team per match. However if both teams are happy to have a pause or it otherwise seems appropriate in the circumstances the referee can allow as many pauses as necessary.
  • In the same way it is up to the referee to judge when a match restart is appropriate. Generally restarts should be avoided if kills have already been scored, however it is still an option in situations where lag/disconnects are severely affecting the progress and/or outcome of a match.
  • The timer may be reset or bonus time may be added in situations where time has been lost for reasons beyond the teams' control eg. disconnects or match restarts.

Additional Information:
  • All participants are asked to maintain the utmost respect for their fellow participants, viewers and event organisers. Referees are authorised to penalise teams for inappropriate behaviour of any kind, although in most cases this should be preceded by some kind of warning.
  • Please only sign up if you are confident of your ability to produce a full team of 8 players.
  • We attempt to balance the event bracket to create competitive, closely matched games. Unfortunately by doing so we cannot please everyone simultaneously. We will continue to try and make everyone's matches as enjoyable as possible; this includes doing our best to avoid repeated matchups from week to week.

New Teams Guide:
  • A team needs at least 8 players, all of whom should be available at the event's start time and for the duration of the event. You do not need to include an official roster in your signup. Teams are not required to have any clan affiliation and players are not required to always play for the same team (however playing for multiple teams on one day is not allowed).
  • Signups close at midnight (UTC) on the Friday preceding the event. Your signup needs a team name and at least one contact, preferably with an emergency steam/skype contact.
  • The event bracket and map rolls will normally be available, in this thread, on the Saturday preceding the event.
  • When we are preparing to start your match, an organiser will contact you in game with the password and invite you to join them in the lobby. We normally start preparing lobbies 10-20 minutes before the event start.
  • Matches do not start at a set time, so it is best to be in game and ready to go for the entire duration of the event until you are eliminated (or win).
  • The stream links will also be made available in this thread. It's often helpful to watch the streams to have an idea of when your match will be starting.

Might I suggest that the coin toss only happen if the entire BO3 series is tied? It is a pretty heavy advantage/disadvantage. If a team wins one and draws the other two, they can lose the series via 2 unlucky coin toss, even though they won a game.

That was the previously existing rule. The new rule is indeed a little hard on teams for tying... which is part of the intention. A significant number of matches running to time limit (which is an increasing trend recently) is something really undesirable from a perspective of event organisation.
The main issue we wanted to eliminate was one consequence of tying, that a tied match results in decision by scores. This means that it's very often largely irrelevant who wins the third match because the other team can still keep the kill lead. A match should not be decided until it is over - hence the rule change.

It's got the convenient side effects of discouraging teams from allowing matches to tie and in some cases the new rule will allow brackets to be finished in 2 matches even with 1 tie... which is especially helpful considering that to get to a tie a bracket will already be taking a long time and pulling us behind schedule.

In the end SCS is not an event with the luxury of ensuring that in every case the best team will win. We've got other priorities to juggle and I feel that for now the new rule is the best compromise. That said if the new rule does not work out as hoped we'll consider alternatives.

Ah I see now. This would probably encourage "stronger" teams to take fights instead of settling for a tie. Instead of going by scores, I thought the old BO3 could have been decided by coin flip if the overall series was a draw. This, on the other hand, encourages the losing team to take the engagement.

Sorry we're late. I went out and forgot it was Friday.  I'm typing this from my phone, so I don't even have our fancy logo or anything

If you could sign up STARBARD!  that would be super cool
