The gun missed the shot because the ship turned, the ship turned because the side engine was not repaired,
the engine got hurt from something the gun could prevent if it did not miss the shot.

This.  It demonstrates that EVERYONE has a hand in success or failure of a ship.  Salute.

It's still mostly pilot's fault for not compensating for damaged engines. Pilot is most responsible position for a reason.

Thats true, but when you have 2 side engines buffed but then one gets destroyed but you still sort of have to back off you will be suprisingly turning. Then again its not the pilots fault but he can make up for the loss.

Which goes to

-When a helm tool is highlighted, it means it is activated

Another good tip that helped me,

When leaving the helm, it is a good idea to put your engine near neutral.
