I think you need to work on making more friends and allies, and don't avoid the Sunday Skirmish! :)

Don't expect people to invite you to pilot for their team if you have no practice with the crew, it's amazing how competitive Sunday skirmish can get. :)
Initialise convocations with your higher level comp player friends, ask if they have too many substitutes available to join or make a team!

And do so in advance so the people who apply have time to practice with you!

And lastly: Stalk your role models, join matches, ask for passwords and be the one to take the initiative in convocation. :)

404's Cakes and Gents often fill up lobbies so make friends and stalk. :)
