Forum post modify timer.

The modify timer should be removed from the first post made in a new topic to allow the authour to add futher points/revise guides in the guides board etc.

I support this. It has made it so I closed my thread instead of letting it go on when I couldn't update the OP with new information/clarification. I've been told it's in for "dispute records" or something like that, but the sheer lack of disputes where this would be NEEDED (at least in this part of the forum) make this a completely useless feature. It just irritates people who need to edit the OP with more info. I've never seen a forum with this kind of feature. If nothing else, at least make it so having more than a certain number of Salutes or Posts allows free editing.

In forums where there wasn't a closing timer, I've seen certain clan recruitment pages grow to become extreme large, informative, beautifully decorated and last for years without the poster having to constantly make new posts whenever they needed to say something. They would just edit the page.

Also with the current system it's impossible to list the names of each clan member in the thread because that would require constant updating. The GOI threads would need to be more editable and flexible if Muse wanted to see better .. and more intriguing posts. I myself keep getting great ideas for suggestions but lack the time to make the suggestion properly because I have to consider the fact that I can't edit it later.

I don't know if this is possible but maybe each person could request a mod to make a specific post editable (just like deleting threads and such right now) so that feature is added and the OP can edit the OP xD and of course they'd have to give a good reason like "yeah I'll need to keep it updated blah blah" so the disputes part that could appear from making them all editable is avoided

Maybe just the "Guides" section and the "Clan" section of the forums can have the timer lifted. But instead of infinitely being able to make edits restrict it to one or two edits a day.

That's great and all, but terribly inconvenient (for both you and us). I was told that was an option, but decided it wasn't worth the effort when I would normally edit my post as much as 10+ times in a day, depending on how many ideas came to me on a given day, or the suggestions that were made. Given the choice, I decided to just close my thread instead. We should just be allowed to modify our posts like 90% or every other forum out there.

What Goldenglade said is probably the biggest argument in favor of removing the modify timer. If mods are willing and capable of editing posts for people, why can't the people just edit their own posts?


Although what Milevan said is probably the biggest argument against it. Do we really want certain posts being edited all the time? It's fine and all for guides that need to be updated regularly, but what if they're in a discussion and keep changing their mind. Suddenly a past post is changed, but someone had already quoted an earlier edition. Arguments break out about lying and putting words in someone else's mouth. Certainly an extreme case, but it could happen. It also becomes more difficult to keep track of discussions. People may change their mind and go back and edit posts, someone trying to follow the conversation later would end up completely lost. Then there's the trolling that could occur. Players posting inappropriate things in very old posts, making it harder on the mods to keep track of.

So it's not a perfect system, but it does prevent some ugliness that could occur. So I suppose I'm on the fence on the issue.

I'd be satisfied with editing the original post of a thread so I could at least update my suggestions as ideas are added and clarifications needed. To use my previous example, I created a suggestion for a ship concept, but initially people just compared it with the Mobula. I partially clarified it in a reply, and went to edit the main post to explain it fully (and to ensure I didn't need to keep repeating myself every 5 posts when people didn't read the whole thread), only to realize I couldn't. That really killed all the excitement I had for the concept, as it made it far harder than it needed to be to update information in a single location so people didn't need to search the entire thread. At least giving us that much would fix much of the problem I have with the currently implemented system.

I'd like to be able to modify my posts at any time as well. Especially in the guide section and the docks section that'd come in handy for me. E.g. I'd have made quite some minor changes to the gunnery guide I'm currently working at - fixing typos, adding a comment/sentence to clarify a certain aspect, etc. They would have improved the quality of the guide slightly. I'm not willing to make the effort to nag a mod to alter my posts for changes which I could do myself within a matter of seconds... if I just was allowed to do so.

I believe we use the Simple Machine Forums. I'm not very familiar with it, since I've never used it from an administrative position. But it might help to look into that and see what options are available for editing posts.

I think that only editing the original post indefinitely would be a good way to go, but someone would have to find if that's actually an option.
