What Guns of Icarus Should Become
« on: October 22, 2013, 09:02:30 am »
I feel that Guns of Icarus is not unlocking it's full potential. It is deviating from the path the developers promised us with too much focus on airships.
Firstly the name "Guns of Icarus" is very misleading, as the game has the name "Icarus" Yes Icarus flew but that was only for a few minutes before his wings melted and he tumble into the ocean. Therefore I was expecting this to be naval combat.

I believe Guns of Icarus needs more ground based and sea based combat. There are simply too many maps where you have to fly an airship and you have no choices to do anything else besides fly in the sky. Amphibious tanks would introduce a much broader choice of game play, both unlocking ground and naval combat. We also need ground troops who can wield weapons and wage war on the ground while airships fly over head, but no one will fly the airships because they have no point in the game.

I think the engineering system should be completely re-worked and be made to be more realistic. We should have time realistic quick time events to repair components to add realism to the game. I think if it took roughly 2 hours to rebuild a destroyed gun component that would be a much better improvement to the measly 5 seconds we have now.
While repairing the hull we should manually climb around the ship to repair damaged areas.

Players should have only 1 life and die if they fall off a ship. They should also take damage from weaponry fire because right now for some reason the players are stronger than the airships themselves.

The maps are all too dead and empty. We need random NPCs walking around and doing their daily jobs. Possibly attacking airships if they end up demolishing their village.

KOTH maps aren't realistic enough. Firstly there is no hill so how are we supposed to "Capture the hill" if there is no hill, this makes no sense at all.
When capturing we shouldn't simply hover next to a balloon and change its colour. We should climb out of our airships and onto the balloon and manually change the colour of the bulb to our teams colour. When securing an area we should manually have to place down fortifications to show we have secured it. Right now all we do is have a different coloured balloon and this is just stupid because it doesn't give you a sense of achievement.

The guns should all be changed. No more howitzers or mini guns because those have nothing to do with the game and ruin the theme. We should all have laser and futuristic weaponry to contribute to the games focus of a retro look.
Secondly we should be able to have space combat. Only if you are a high level and you get to fight over control of an Ion Cannon to support other players in servers.

As a last note, there should be sky whales. Everyone knows these exists they are just endangered and are very shy creatures. I have a pet baby sky whale so if you don't believe me you can come over to my house or I can give you a picture. You might not see the sky whale in the picture though because it is very shy and can blend into the background like a chameleon, which is a natural form of protection they have evolved. I did not genetically modify it with experiments.

These are the ideas I have come up with to improve the game so far. I may add more ideas later.
Hopefully you support my opinions and thanks for reading.

Hey cheesy crackers  :)

I would like to respectfully counter some of your statements. The games name, Guns of Icarus, doesn't directly mean the tale of icarus but, if i get the games lore right, an airship called icarus flown by a captain called Gabriel and his adventures became the legend of which this game environment is based on. The lore and history behind the game is worth reading on the main page to get a better understanding of that background the game has.
The world is recovering from a gigantic war in an era similar to the 1920s and hence the technology is what it is.

The shipbattles and crew functions are based on balance and teamwork and to keep that intact and true to the game background it's what it is. Imo now closing the anniversary of the game the job Muse have done is incredible, when you also consider where they come from. The hurricane at start, problems and issues.. Hats off for coming so far.

Adventure mode is coming and PvE so there's some of the things you suggested on its way.

King of the hill is just a figure of speech imho and means trying to gain something and keep the others away. I remember it as a kid there were snow hills and you tried to be king of the hill and keep the others from the top. Capture the flag is more like getting a flag and then having to transport it to your own place. Sometimes it's just capturing a point. Depending on game but what i mean is the name of it is, i believe, not to be taken literally.

Good to read your opinions.. And no harm meant.. I was confused when i played this game and was happy when more experienced players and devs told me what it's really about.

EDIT: Game history -> http://gunsoficarus.com/world/history/

EDIT 2: And if i was mistaken and you were not talking about the current game, but something you would like to see in say guns of icarus online 2, then my bad. :D

With respect to the name "Guns of Icarus" I feel the OP did not focus on the "Guns of" part nearly enough. Any one who has read Greek mythology would know that Icarus, son of master gunsmith Daedalus, preferred wielding duel M84 Škorpion machine pistols and leaping acrobatically in the style of John Woo. This game was clearly meant to be an homage to the the Hong Kong style Action movies of the 80's and 90's.

While the parkour elements are there, the game is still lacking in the personal hand held weapons and white pigeons. Muse is still refining these elements with the hawks and grease who's flocking mechanics are much less complex than that of pigeons. I look forward to the day when Muse finally perfects the pigeon code and we can have swarms of them rising off the ground as we run around in slow motion.

You can also see progress made towards the Akimbo gun fighting game elements with the various new costumes sporting side arms. Like the Mexican standoffs popular in the John Woo movies we will all draw our guns at an appointed time. Right now we are playing in the dramatic buildup part of the movie.

I feel as though Muse needs to really focus on the "Online" portion.

Not "online gaming," per say, but rather more of the joys of surfing the internet.

The community needs a radical change. Gamers who grow up in the Guns of Icarus online world are sheltered, and are raised thinking that assholes are a rare occurrence and are not tolerated.

This is a horrible representation of the "online" community as a whole.

That only addresses half of the problem.

We all know the statistic. Most of the internet is devoted to but one, soulless purpose.

Cats.

We need more anime chicks and cat-like things in Guns of Icarus ONLINE.

The internet is just a cesspool of arguments with strangers, things pertaining to cats, and wasting hours and hours in front of a screen in a dimly lit room.

Guns of Icarus online only satisfies one of these three criteria.

The game needs a major overhaul.

I just think we should change the game to "Cats of Cat-Icarus" online. In the style of Kirk's suggestion.

I want everyone to be cat-girls with atleast a D-cup.

Except for me, I get to be a man, a handsome man, and the only one.

The rest will sign a contract upon the next patch release for MUSE to surgically make them cat-girls, with cute japanese girl accents and voices.

Are we going for the humanoid cat girls with one pair of mammarys at the upper chest region or quadruped cat girls with 4 pairs of mammarys running along the belly?

thanks.

Don't worry, you're definitely not the first. Perfect example: this gem from Shinkurex, back when he was new around here:

Ok, so I need clarification here. Are you saying that moving around your ship is OP?

Oh, WASD OP.

GoI needs motion controls.

Funny you should mention motion controls. Try playing Tomb Raider after you've been playing Uncharted: Golden Abyss for weeks. Sitting in an airport last night with my laptop and I kept trying to move my controller to move Lara's aim. Then I'd have to remind myself, oh right, this isn't my Vita. Adding motion controls might not be that bad for gunners but only for the PS4 version. Mouse and keyboard is still faster for PC.
