Hi! Am New & Slightly Disheartened
« on: March 10, 2013, 03:43:17 pm »
So....hello~  For anyone that bumps into me in-game, "Vef" or "Veffi" is fine since my full name will probably take too long to type while getting shot at.

I've been "eyeballing" Guns of Icarus Online since a little after it's release on Steam.  The whole game reminded me highly of an online, co-op Skies of Arcadia.  I realise it will still be a while before adventure mode is released, but I expect I'll enjoy it a lot if it turns out anything like Freelancer's multiplayer mode (travel/trade routes).  I'll probably grab the original game once it's on sale too.

I'm a big fan of games where a small team has to work together to accomplish something - learning a job and figuring out how to do it well is an amazing experience.....Monster Hunter Tri's Jehn Mohran Gunboat comes to mind.

I tried joining a few matches last night, but the ship(s) I was on would quickly explode before I could really move around/do anything to stop it from happening (was Engineer trying to repair everything).  I have a general idea from Practise and tutorial videos of how things work & are repaired, but it seriously felt like the entire thing was out of my control & our ship never lasted more than a few seconds anyways (frankly, I blame the Pilot).

I noticed some other people talking about a teaching session on Monday night that I'll probably try to show up for, but I'm experiencing a bit of culture shock from the fact that it seems so intimidating to just randomly drop into someone else's room (spectator mode doesn't seem to let me zoom on individual players & isn't helping me either).  It seems like there are enough people playing now that know how to win fast that I'm just coming in too late to the party & I'm going to be eating a lot of dirt.

I guess that's a very common experience for new players here. A lot depends on your luck with joining a Captain & Crew that actually know what they're doing. I've had enemy Captains today that would just run their ship countless times against cliffs, and supposedly you experienced the same already as a crewmember.

Your best bet in the beginning is looking for a Ship with experienced people on, something about Level 4 upwards, and you're especially lucky if those people talk in the lobby chat - either by text or voice. If you signal a experienced Captain that you're willing to learn and can talk with either microphone or text chat, you'll be received as a blessing and declared the saint of all the skysailors. People willing to learn and people willing to talk are extremely difficult to come by.

With reading tutorials and watching tutorials you've already made bigger steps forward than a good part of the people flying around in the lobby, as sad as this is to say :P
Next time you're online, just state in the Lobby channel, with J, that you're new around here, willing to play either engineer or gunner, and wanting to learn. By now we've got a good base of people who are willing to help out, so chances are someone will contact you!

I also expect that you'll get a lot more replies here, all offering to teach you ingame, and you should make best of use of that! If you see me ingame, by the name Kyren, I've usually got one spot on my ship free and are always happy to take in new players!
In any case, I see the problems with your ships exploding around you as soon as you join in a lack of crew coordination. If things are in such a dire state when you join, you could expect the Captain or someone else to call specific parts to repair!

Lastly, have a late but still honest and friendly welcome to Guns of Icarus Online! I suppose things will go a lot better for you now that you've joined the forum community, you'll soon have a lot of crewing requests and guild offers.

It's always tough when you start playing this game for the first time. People like to play with their friends, and so experienced players fly with experienced players. However, there are lots of people out there who will be willing to help out. Try joining a ship with experienced players, and listen to what they tell you to do. Ask them any questions if you like. You'll learn the ropes with time. When I started playing, I got pummelled constantly. Now... That doesn't really happen. It seems impossible at first, but if you work at it you'll eventually be able to fight with the best.

Thanks, most of that is pretty good to hear.  Also, I want to clarify from my above post in case it was interpreted wrongly - I've been watching the game's development since it was first released on Steam, but I only actually got my copy about a day or two ago (Collector's Edition - that soundtrack on there is awesome~).

I'm a regular "chatty Cathy" when it comes to this sort of stuff - I think that's why everything is such culture shock to me.  I'm used to "captaining" the Monster Hunter gunboat & plotting out everyone's general duties, timing all of the attacks, and generally "explaining everyone's ears off" so that each crew member is at no time lost for something to do (whether they actually listen or not is another matter).  I was asking questions in Regional chat as a spectator and in the lobby last night, and it basically felt like I was getting ignored - it was "GGs" all around, then people would just leave the room without explaining.

I'll definitely make sure to keep a look for you guys though, our forum names are our in-game names as I understand it, yes?

Yeah, sadly most of the people still don't take some time to reply to questions in the Regional Chat. Many also don't have a level of English up to that, or simply don't feel comfortable using their English "so much". Most games don't have any communication prior to the match, and then just a GG at the end, that's frequent, and I personally don't mind that much. However, if someone comes into the Lobby and asks questions, I consider it a little rude to ignore that still. Anyways, your best bet is still either asking here or in the Regional Chat.

Also, if you see people with yellow names, approach them directly. They're Community Ambassadors, a volunteer position for people that basically help out in the community. Could be that they're busy at a given moment or afk, but I'm sure that some of them, if not most, would take some time to help you getting along as well.

Our forum names are our in game names, aye! Just go to the Social tab ingame and add the people, you'll see if they're online or when they've last played.

Personally I got the hang of the game quickly and immediately went pilot. I understand a lot of other people take longer but eventually you'll get it. It just takes time.

Thanks again for the pointers earlier Kyren - I had a really successful night: 9 games, 4 wins, streak of 3 so far.  One of them lasted like 10 or 20 minutes and was fairly epic.

I'm getting the impression that Engineer is a semi-thankless job though.  I'm just stuck towards the back twiddling my thumbs until something happens (while the more experienced crew "bonks" my stations anyways), and even then, a major attack usually eats through the hull too fast to repair it (I still blame the Pilot).

Overall, I'm having a blast with everything.

Wait, which ship were you engineering on? If you're on a Spire, then you'll be pretty much perpetually glued to the hull, but the other ships should give you a chance to do things.

I played at least one match on the same team as you yesterday... I told you not to surrender. We lost anyways, but we still got two kills. Remember, you should never give up in this game. No matter what the odds, you can always beat the other team :)

^Agreed... Last night, I was playing against some lvl 1s, and they cleaned our clocks... Also, Gunners tend to bring a pipewrench along for the ride, so that you dont have to worry about their guns, and focus on more important stuff....
