Altimeter and Speedometer? (More brass gauges!)
« on: October 04, 2013, 09:15:43 pm »
As a pilot, it would be really helpful to know what altitude you're at and what speed you're going.
Those are pretty basic instruments for any vehicle that flies. But they would increase the immersion of the game and keep the pilot informed.
Right now you're pretty much only relying on visuals, which works, but you can't compare speeds between ships or see just how much speed you get from kerosene.

An altimeter would not help you from crashing into mountains or buildings, since it would be based on sea level.
But it would help you get a sense of where the ceiling is at and what rate you are descending/ascending at.

I'd also love to see an actual magnetic compass, in addition to the hud one. Because brass gauges and such really brings out the steampunk feel.

Note: The images are from Rise of Flight, depicting real WW1 instruments. Thus they are not that easy to read..
Here is something more easy on the eye.

I was told the blue tube on the helm is an altimeter, but i never figured out how it works since i took a break from this game. I agree with you that these gauges would be useful and perfectly appropriate for the style of it all.

Yeah there's an altimeter but damned if it's ever actually worked for me.

I've heard it works for other players though.

It would be nice if the meter also had a gauge with numbers, a half filled blue tube doesn't give you a point of reference other than, being halfway from the ground..

I only use the blue tube altimeter to find the top of the map, finding the bottom is a lot easier, though...

I would LOVE a speedometer, too! I could picture it being used to tell your gunners the exact speed so they could compensate their firing arc accordingly.

What happened to the good old days where you stuck your virtual finger in your virtual mouth and then put it in the virtual wind and could tell what speed it was L/ I'm dissapointed in you Zenark :/

It's because the virtual wind screws up a virtual measurment like that.
