Anything composed by Nobuo Uematsu will, for the most part, hit the right tone for me.

Pardon? I mean, sure, he does sweeping orchestral scores and whatnot but the guy loves his 1970s Emerson Lake and Palmer-style progressive rock organ pieces too. That's kind of a broad spectrum, isn't it?

that is indeed true. not everything would be the best fit for everyone but my first experience and perhaps love of airships came from the Final Fantasy series.  So how could I hear any of his music and not be reminded of that sense of wonder that came with exploring some of the expansive overworlds in those great airships as well as the occasional fights that took place on them.

I'll add a few pieces of music form World of Warcraft.

Gunship Battle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLANCpGw8cU
Warships. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-ucRu5VeGs
Gunships. (Sort of a longer version Gunship battle without cannon noises) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zokxiMizxZ0
And Operation: Gnomeregan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AL-j8h0r2Q8

I actually listen to Francois Rabbath's stuff (obscure, I know).  I think the initial cello quartet in GoI made me think of it, since most of his solo pieces are him on the double bass accompanied by tabla.  L'odyssee D'eau specifically (it sort of picks up into battle music around 5:30).  Horda is Squid music.  There are others, but they're not hosted online.

Another goodie from Caravan Palace: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qjomu9K0Xk

and oh, the OST from Greed Corp: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqGLmkxtKcU&list=PL321BC3E103A74C7D
(if you haven't played Greed Corp you should take a look at it. It's a funny little game with rather cute steampunk graphics. Though the gameplay isn't too deep)

Dust Bowl Dance by Mumford and Sons reminds me of the Burren and GOIO.

I have plenty of different music styles I listen to, mostly depending on which role and which map.

Let's start with something classical:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRdMTL4rSnM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3217H8JppI
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6z4KK7RWjmk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Tr0otuiQuU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdtLuyWuPDs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_KdYrF_CZ8s

Lately I also like listening to swing, for example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2q4Mm3jbhA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNuX7bs2qAM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnGEX72AToU
(There's plenty of songs and even some stream radio stations!)

OST/Soundtrack:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ioQnaB1ijtk
The Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack
Lord of the Rings soundtrack
Skyrim soundtrack
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lP0D5u3EMfA
(Or anything by Hans Zimmer

Those are the ones I love to listen to when playing!

I seem to have a different approach for most of my games.  Usually, the whole crew listens in on a Turntable.fm playlist.

I realy think some of the battle themes from Rise of Nations fit well as well as others.

Examples include:
The Russian
Galleons
Waterloo

Something calmer would be The Simple song and one of my personal favs as well.

And of course you can't forget the Rise of Legends spin off.
Doge's Theme
Vinci Economic
Vinci Winning
Clash of the Races

Contributing, I hope x3
