Capture the Flag
« on: July 11, 2013, 02:40:17 pm »
I was reading this topic about towing Mobulas: https://gunsoficarus.com/community/forum/index.php/topic,1637.msg0/

And I got to thinking... we have harpoons, we have floating objective barrels, why not combine them to make a CTF game?

The basic idea is that the teams need to drag the objective to their home 'base'. This could be a classic defend, a single one spawning in the middle, both defending at once... you get the idea. The objective could be heavy to slow the dragging ship, or it could have some physics implemented to have it tug it around during turns etc. It could have its own little engine that makes it slowly drift towards its starting place, or not.

I think this game mode would be interesting because it would alter ship composition: every ship would probably want a harpoon (unless 1 ship was the dedicated grabber, but to me that seems a bit foolish). The flip side to this of course is that if no one brought harpoons then the match couldn't be played... I'm not really sure what would be good for that. Require at least 1 ship per team to have 1?

While I do like the idea of CTF, a game system that absolutely requires a certain weapon does not appeal to me.

What we need, obviously, is GOIO soccer (aka football, before our euro friends get all huffy), that way there's no need for harpooning!

Now THAT would be funny! (Especially if you could shoot the target balloon to move it around the sky)  =)

On a less silly note, CTF would be possible even without harpooned targets (even though that would be undeniably neat). You could do a CTF type map by making a ship 'dock' under a capture point long enough for the countdown to complete. Once it has done so,  that ship would be considered to be carrying the 'valuable cargo'. It would then have to move that cargo to a different CP to score. If a ship with the 'valuable cargo' gets destroyed, a new CP would spawn at the death location. Any other ship could swoop in to capture it. Then that ship would have the cargo and would have to return to the correct CP to score.

Imagine a desert scrap game where the object is not simply to sit in the middle all the time. A ship would swoop in. Salvage cargo. Then, it would try to get back out to a starting location to score. This would be a super fun game mode IMO.

I agree with Seamus. I think there should be more of a traditional CTF. No harpoons, just regular CTF. But with a few different parameters.

Each team has a point with a flag that they defend and each team has to capture the enemy's flag and return it to their point.

3v3 or 4v4 - I think it needs the a lot of ships to be fun.

Whoever is holding the enemy flag receives DoT (damage over time) to their Hull and/or guns OR maybe just reduce engine output (damaging engines or balloon IMO would make it impossible)

When and where ever the ship that was holding the flag is destroyed, the flag stays. It can either be picked up by that ships ally and continue bringing it back or it can be instantly returned to base if one of the other teams ship takes it.

I can imagine that each team would need a Squid to steal the flag (and to recover lost ones), a Pyramidion to escort the Squid, and a Galleon to protect the flag.

Oooh, I like Seamus's idea a lot! The Squid might be a little too good at it, but then again it would be incredibly vulnerable while "docked".

A football/soccer style where you either ram or shoot the ball would be wonderfully fun! Heavy carronade sends it flying into an enemy Spire and kills it by accident :P.
