Defeating two galleons

<< < (2/3) > >>

RearAdmiralZill:
Well from that, I gather that they are limited in their effective ranges. Assuming you don't want to match them in galleons, a goldfish with a lumberjack would do nicely to pin down one of them, leaving the other open for attack at the flanks.

Also, since they are galleons, you could come in on the outside of one of the galleons, which would basically shield you from the other galleon's fire.

There is no sure fire way, and like I said, there are a lot of variable at play here. Disabling one outside of it's effective range, thus opening up the other to flanking is a solid tactic though. Terrain can play a big part too, as a galleon is the slowest turning boat. That depends on map. Further, I also assume here that the other boat on the enemy team is tied up with one of your allies. If not, it gets harder.

Positioning is everything to this game. Galleons are more fixed in their stance, so that lets you get a good angle before heading in to pin them down.

1) Disable one galleon with tarbarrel/hwacha fire to keep it out of the fight long enough for you to kill the other one.
2) Use cover such that you can only shoot/ be shot at  by one galleon and not the other.
3) Use one galleon as cover from the other (place it directly between you and the other ship).
4) Hide underneath/above one galleon as to not take fire from it.
5) Out snipe them at long range with a ship that has a smaller profile (Lumberjack goldfish)

Good advice, I'll try 2 on a map with mountains and 5 may work better on a more open map.

We tried 3 and 4 without success, they would always position themselves so at least one broadside is facing us.  As for 1, if we tarred one galleon the third non-galleon ship would swoop in to defend the tarred galleon so it had a chance to repair engines and the other galleon would halt and stick close.

Thanks for the input, goldfish with a lumberjack seems the way to go.  As for the other boat on the enemy team, it focused on "escorting" the galleons meaning it would not pursue our teammates so we could pick him off away from the galleons (our initial strategy...we quickly learned he would not take the bait).

Captain Smollett:
If those Galleons were only packing Hwachas, a long range Spire would murder them.

Also don't forget the power of three ships focusing fire. Two gattling guns and three explosive weapons between the three ships on your team can kill a Galleon in under 10 seconds if the explosive weapons are fired when the armor is down.  If you coordinate it right you can just kill them one by one starting with the closest ship.  Just make sure you're about 500M or so away from an all manticore broadside so you can still dodge a bit.

Lord Dick Tim:
When I've been faced with this situation I've done a lot of weird things.  I love your question by the way, salute for it, great answers from the community to.
I've used a close range carronade goldfish with side flares to good effect here, coming in fast with a tar barrel and strafing the galleons with balloon damage, the flare hitting other balloons as I charge in then out, changing direction often and fast with a claw.
Essentially I try to rope them close together near difficult terrain, as close to th floor as possible to get them hitting each other and objects, with a bunch of tar around to limit their direction and escape routes.  The object here isn't to kill one, just keep them disorganized so my allies can focus fire one down at range.
It's hard to do, and one mistake puts a manticore into your engines and it's all over.
