Sunday Community Skirmish Format changes
« on: July 06, 2015, 02:20:05 pm »
In an effort to make the event more fun for teams and viewers, the event will adopt the following formats of tournaments depending on the number of teams that will sign up:
  • Double Elimination:This format will be adopted for 4 or more teams.
  • Round Robin + Final:This format will be adopted for 3 teams.
  • Best of 5: This format will be adopted for 2 teams.
*Every format will adopt the same time ruleset except for the tie breaker match in Round Robin.

Double Elimination:
  • The spawns will be defined by the place on the bracket (Up=Red).
  • Each round will be a Bo1.
  • The team that wins the winners bracket will be given the win advantage in the final.

Round Robin + Final:
  • The spawns will be defined by the place on the bracket (Up=Red).
  • Two matches in each round of the group stage.
  • Two teams with the best point difference (kills/deaths difference) advance from the group stage into the Final.
  • Ties between the second and third place will be decided by a single match with the duration of 10 minutes (highest scoring team or if equal, first kill will decide; otherwise coin toss).
  • Ties between all three teams will be decided by a match against each team with the duration of 10 minutes (highest scoring team will decide; otherwise multiple winners). No final after the three tiebreaker matches.
  • The team that wins the group stage will be given the win advantage in the final. If there is no clear winner, the two leading teams play a Bo1 final.

This changes will be applied from now on.

Kind regards

welp, no more being okay with 5-4 scores in round robin style.

welp, no more being okay with 5-4 scores in round robin style.

Well, sure, you aren't gonna win 5-4 and be happy about it. But on the contrary the losing team gets a fair amount of points out of it too. So it's not a "The winner takes it all" mentality. The scoring system in Round Robin better reflects the skill level of the teams and the outcome of the match - and rewards each team accordingly.

You could say that if someone fights a lower skilled team and wins 5-0 and someone fights a higher skilled team and wins 5-4 it wouldn't be balanced. But at the end of the day, every permutation of team combinations will be achieved so that everyone fights versus everyone. So if there is a lower skilled team and a higher skilled team - you are going to get placed with both over the duration of the event - so you will get both the 5-0 and the 5-4 score.

At the end, it comes down to how much better your team in relation to all other playing teams is - as it should be, because if you have double elimination with 3 teams, not only that the event is really short usually, it is also potentially leaving some teams not fighting other teams and not showing their worth against different and varied opponents - Round Robin fixes that.

was always happy about a 5-4 win.

the score is irrelevant compared to getting the Victory screen.
in a balance where pyramidion heavily dominated, I always took the 5-4 win with a spire and goldfish with high regard of my own teams skill level.

no need to explain the validity of a round robin event tom, just chill. IM just stating the fact that a 5-4 win wont be satisfactory enough if it doesn take you to the finals.
It's not really a problem for me.
in fact i hope scs wont have to do round robins at all ;)

Might be irrelevant to you if you got a 5-4 win but towards both fighting teams - taking into account both of their scores is more meaningful, accurate and fair.

the system is arguably problematic because certain playstyles could be more likely to concede kills when winning than others, even with a relatively equal skill gap. but I don't think it should be a huge problem in what is not a particularly hardcore scene or event.

given the high demand from teams to change 3 signups to a different format. round robin is the best solution all around.
