Outside of this I would never suggest stacking guns. One hflak can oneclip kill most ships. A lj just needs 2-3 hits on a balloon to kill it. A hcarro just needs oneclip aswell. And we all know that 2 hwachas volleys wont disable more than the whole ship ;).

Keep firing is vital on a Gally, yes.  If you have an engi on top deck or are doing it yourself, while they are manning the port light gun, have them repair the hull when the chance arises.  Remember the sword and shield tactic- if the shield can die in a matter of seconds because it's armor is down, what use is it?  I'd like to fly with you sometime, though.  Friend me in game, and when I'm next on we can kick some ass together.

I actually want to disagree with some of these points depending on how situations arise from lobby setups and formations. I actually find a double lumberjack on the port side with something like banshee or light flak useful - for example - because the disables on enemy's balloons are more likely - if you have a solid gunner the use of loch shots will also help if enemy ships get too close on that side. I would judge when to turn to my starboard for short range engagement, which is something you'll just pick up over time when you get that feeling about when the timing is right.

I also tend to bring karo, claw and tar or drogue chute, claw and tar since speed isn't the primary contribution to that ship. Why fight its slowness when you can better utilize other tools instead? Maps like Paritan or even dunes doesn't always justify it if you can benefit with something else - and ofc this is entirely based on your team formation and the strategy behind the engagement in game. I esp like tar on this ship because of what Vom accurately describes as the blender ships' love to stay behind a galleon. Generally I'll pop a tar and turn to engage them if I'm able to, sometimes teamwork from other ships will be necessary tho so careful judgement will have to be used here.

On more unusual occasions I'll shy away from engine harming tools so that I can have my crew focus more on shooting rather than repairing, but everything in every game is situational and you have to carefully weigh in your choices when it comes to complimenting your allied ships and countering your enemy ones.

Bear in mind though that I'm the kind of pilot that likes to have weapons aboard that has multiple uses, things like Heavy flak and mortar is specialized at what they do but can only really effectively use explosive damage - where as banshees can shoot long or short, they can start fires, they can destroy balloons with enough shots, they can even do considerable damage to the hull when the armor is down - this is the kind of stuff I think about when I put together an assortment of weaponry. So sometimes you'll see me bring hwacha and lumberjack for my 'long range' side since both can perform differently at different ranges for different functions.

Great advice Ayetach, just realized we also played together for a few games last night where we were the meat shield and you were sniping! Lots of kills, a couple sloppy deaths by me but definitely getting better with all this advice and more practice!
