Fixed Crew Spots Set by Captain
« on: November 07, 2014, 01:45:59 pm »
I was playing with a new player the other day who made a good suggestion:

Captains should set certain slots of their ships to only be filled by certain classes

Meaning that a captain could chose to have all spots be for engineers so only engineers could join those spots, they could also chose to have one gunner spot and 2 engineer spots and so on. I imagine this would work in a similar way to loadout recommendations.
I believe this is a good way to solve the problem of having too many gunners while at the same time not being biased towards engi/gunner if the current meta changes (double gunner becomes somehow viable)

Although I do like this, I do not believe muse will ever implement this.

Trolling aspect, set it to all pilots or all gunners.

Matchmaker  is going to do whatever it wants anyway, so this will change nothing.

I do like this, but, yes, the trolling potential is pretty high

When 2 crewmembers on my ship have the same loadout, I construct a 3rd loadout for when a gun changes. For example on my Mobula my engineers have the same loadouf and the gunner's loadout depends when I have a hades or a mercury on top.

But that just might be only me.

I do that. My hwacha/banshee spire is pretty versatile, map wise, so I have one engi loadout with greased and one with heavy

Trolling potential high? Then remove all pilot tools except Bumpers and Chute. In fact, remove pilot and put all ships on rails so pilots can not fly off to explore things or suicide the ship.

Seriously, though. This would be such a minor issue as to not be an issue, and would vastly improve lobbies and matches. The ability to change to pilot or gunner without the captain's permission is, BY FAR, more prone to abuse and trolling, and DOES happen all the time. I have had countless matches ruined by this behavior.

I am against this if only because... I don't feel the captain should have 100% say in a team. If you really want three engineers but someone really wants to be a gunner, I think you should have to find a compromise.

It's why I am happy captains "suggested items" isn't a forced function... I imagine many people wish it was..

Could always have a "suggested class" thing so the person has something on their screen saying the captain whats them to be a different class, this may help with language and other barriers in communication that happen..

I agree the trolling potential is no higher then many aspects of the game.. So isn't really an issue, the captains who use it, if added, to troll, are gonna troll regardless in someway.

I think a better solution to solve most of the issue(mainly getting stuck with two gunners), is just default ships to one pilot one gunner two engineers, when MM makes it.. If there is to many gunners, simply suggest they change to engineer to find a quicker match.

This would solve "most" issues right away, since people who will play gunner or engineer.. can willingly switch before they even get to the lobby..

People who want to be a gunner no matter - can just wait for a game where they will get to be one.

Muse already said they could do it easy in one of the fireside chats, they just don't want to .. So it should be easy to do.. or at lest very possible if I misremember words.

I don't think a captain having to not have three engineers is an issue necessarily. I do feel two gunner ships is a balance issue that can be addressed... More so in novice or lower skill games then higher skill since.. I've seen two gunner ships do good .. but its very situational..

I think the problem is having 2-3 extra gunners/ pilots. not just having a single gunner.

The problem is choice.

The captain by design has a lot if inherent power on a boat. You suggest loadouts, you pick the boat, you tell people what they are going to do upon that boat. If a crewmate doesnt want your recommended loadout, he's either achievement hunting, a second gunner who wants to gun and matchmaking was unkind, is new, or a troll. Forcing players to do x when they dont want to will just net a bad experience anyway.

Hopefully with the latest change with them keeping novice games away from the matchmaker, they will then apply something to limit double gunner/pilot situations. Forcing loadouts on the lobby end isnt ideal.

As a guy on a gunner kick, I would not mind this. I would gladly wait to find a ship that wants me then get matched to a crew with a gunner already crying at me over the mic to switch to engineer.

Well if Muse would give us a kick option we wouldn't have to fear 2nd gunners, trolls, or about a dozen other problem players in this game.

Sure there would be abuse at times but its clear the CAs can't stop it and I've yet to see Mods actually lay down the law. Its always a dozen warnings and pleadings before they finally act. Troll could be punching a baby and they'd just sit there waving hands saying,"now don't do that, this is my final warning." When there is no recourse for handling trolls, it is the community which suffers the most.

Report them and hope they get banned? What a joke. Sure there are those that do get banned for their behavior but the time between report and banning isn't fast enough. Nor are the punishments steep enough. Who is Muse more afraid of pissing off? A handful of trolls, or a multitude of players?

People are always prone to report bad experiences with companies more than good. A troll reporting will be loud yes, but won't surpass the cries of a multitude who trash the game because of the troll's behavior.

A kick function is way out of the cards now with matchmaking implemented. If Muse intends to tweak it to focus more and more on balance, then a kick just doesn't fit anymore. "Oh, you're levels are too low for my liking, I want someone more experienced. /kick"

Just because you haven't seen mod actions for yourself does not mean they do not happen. I've had to ban plenty of people.

This is similar to my views on this subject, because ill be honest, I never get double pilots or gunners, for whatever reason, but I can see it happening. The "big stick" approach of forcing loadouts that people may or may not want isn't what I think is best. Muse acknowledging two gunners/pilots is just bad, and not allowing the matchmaker to create such an environment is best, until they truly believe that they have somehow made two gunners viable.

Off-topic, but you know why that is, right? Unless you need more than 1 ammo type (say for a hwacha, mines or a highly specialised ship loadout), having even one gunner is a disadvantage to the ship. I suggest if you want to use the guns, (and there is no gunner but cap still wants you to change) just ask your captain if you could be assigned to a gunning position, even if he wants you as an engineer. Especially on a pyramidion or a mob, at least 2 of the engineers will be shooting most of the time anyway.
