Mic/No Mic matches
« on: December 22, 2013, 07:29:34 am »
Over the last two days after returning, I've only found myself in one fun game, which was with some Cakes. They, thankfully, were using voice chat, and we did very successfully as a result.  However, almost every other game I have joined has silent crew on it, which not only is bad from a game point-of-view, but also from the point-of-view of having fun. There is nothing fun about a crew that is totally silent and running around aimlessly, as these all were. Even today after doing one match, I had to leave on account of the silent crew, with a silent captain whose only contribution to the whole game was to say in text chat "just do whatever, I don't care".

This is really a problem for those who do have the ability to use voice chat and are willing to.

Thus, I propose an added option for the match creation: Voice chat Yes/No/Either.

"Yes" would mean all must have a mic and are willing to use it.

"No" would be mainly for those without mics or those not willing to speak.

"Either" would be what we have now, a mix of those who speak and those who don't.

Thanks,

Mepic.

Why should such restrictions exist? I agree, games with cahtting crew are more fun, but that doesn't mean someone should be forced to talk or not to talk.
I'm not very talkative person and I prefer to focus on piloting rather than entertaining my crew. Also I'd rather use ingame command than say something in mic because it's very quiet. So you may not hear a single word from me. But why should it mean that I should be sent to some "No mic" ghetto?

This is why the "Either" option would exist. I just find that without communication, it's very, very frustrating.

And take into consideration that the higher you get the more ppl actually have and use a mic.
Im quite experienced player but not that experienced as pilot.
I barely talk when i fly cause i concentrate on what i do rather than talk alot.
I stick to basic needs and concentrate rather than talk all the time.

In Novice games ppl barely use their mics or dont have one but in higher lvl games you normally get guys with mics.

I know this. The people I was flying with were in the 100s of matches played... I never go onto novice games.

As long as this restriction does not list udner or above servers.

We have a bunch of restrictions allready.

Playing/lobby . Country . Scatter . Password.

I agree, i need a mic. And when playing with crew, all i need is if they are listening. If they have mic, i can listen for warnings or failures like "My gun is down" when i havent noticed it with my own eyes. Sucks not being able to play with no mic people but i think this idea should be taken to crew members individualy.

When in lobby, you should be able to see who has voice deactivated or not.

I do NOT support this idea. We've already got a number of match restrictions in place. Further, how would you actually enforce this? Just because someone HAS a mic doesn't mean they use it at all, which theoretically renders the while system moot.

I understand the pain of a non-communicative team, but I just thing the cons here SEVERELY out-weigh any potential benefits.

I think a better option would be a strong emphasis in the beginning of the game about the importance of having/using vocal communication. There is no real indication at all that it is even needed.

Actually, I agree with this far more.

I would emphasize the importance of communication of any sort in the tutorials, not just vocal one. Maybe a sentence or two about how important it is to discuss team/crew strategy.  I met a lot of new players these days who were genuinely surprised when higher levels told them that it is in fact better if they cooperate with their team and crew instead of fighting individually with their ships or doing crew work without any planning. Perhaps because there are many other games where this would actually work and where team work and communication are not that necessary. Also, I know many good players who, for several reasons, can't or don't want to use microphones but do an awesome job during matches because they use typed or voice chat in an intelligent way. Mics are good, but not that crucial for a game to be fun and successful. Communication is the crucial part.

It is true a mic is benefitial and i agree that it is needed. But only at a real high lvl. Like competetive lvl.
Everything else can be handled good enough without.

I believe that the game is a lot more enjoyable when voice communication is being used, and that communication in general should be reinforced in the tutorials, but I don't think any physical restriction should be in place.

There are a lot of FPSs out there where you can just go solo and ignore your team and still win. There are very few games like Guns where communication is a keystone. You can tell who comes directly from the first by the <10 game folks that hit a match and instantly ready up, or start yelling at everyone else to ready up.

Also, I agree that the game is a lot more fun with vocal, even when losing. I often crack a joke or two to the crew if we end up on the more explody end of a match. In fact, I would say that helps keep crews together more than anything else. I have left a lot of silent ships on winning streaks to join noisy losing crews.

Just have an icon by their name stating if they have mic or don't have mic. Then you know not to get on their ships.

And how do you tell that, exactly? I might have an inbuilt computer mic that I don't use. I might just have a mic that I don't use. I might have voice chat enabled, but have my game volume muted...

I just think this is way to hard to quantify.
