GoIO Animals
« on: November 24, 2014, 09:42:56 pm »
Okay, so we all know the mystical Skywhale totally exists. That is out of the question. What is up for grabs though is what other kinds of animals are out there. Make one up and slap a description on it to see what else lives in the world of Guns of Icarus.

To get some gears started:

Dust Gull

A bird often found circling in flock around the areas of the dunes, this particular species has special coating on their feathers and eyes that allow them to be able to fly through duststorms without significant injury by sand. Although they have been proven to eat off of the occasional berry or herb, they are most notable for their recent record of eating the bodies of the crashed ship. Many a crew have noticed a formation of these birds flying in wake of a pirate in his attempt to hide, and have consequently blown it out of the sky, providing more food for the hungry creatures.

Rust mites: A ubiquitous pest, present on many a ship, they get their nutrients by eating the plentiful oxidized metal aboard airships and scrap.  Scourge of the engineer, as their excretement speeds up the rusting of a component.  Hard to spot, harder to kill, the best defense is preventative maintenence and taking care of your ship.

Hydrogen flies: Often present in balloons, these flies rise to great heights throgh the use of hydrogen sacks on their backs, almost like  miniature airships.  Once they reach a sufficient height, they tuck in, and let the wind carry them to new airspace.  Once in flight, the fly gives birth, laying many eggs filed with lifting gas, sacrificing its own lift in the process.

Engine spiders: Spiders adapted to spinning webs in complicated gear work.  Extremely strong thread.  Once again, the Engineer's bane, as clearing them out can take some time, and they like to bite.

Air barnacles: Exactly what it says on the tin.  They like the bottom of Airships, and spread through airborne 'spores'.

Sniffer animals: Any animal with a keen sense of smell that has been trained to recognize leaking Hydrogen.  Also helps repel boarding actions.

Desert goats: After the mountains that were once desert disappeared, many animals were trapped in their new, harsh environment.  Mountain goats were ne of them.  As is well known, goats will eat practically any thing.  Desert goats can and will eat practically anything.  Thus includes other animals, and you.  Be very scared.

Blue Duck: A duck species that quacks nigh constantly, and have been spotted in large swathes of open sky.  Still amphibious, but better adapted for great heights than your average duck.  Suspected to prey on unsuspecting crews.

Sky Kraken: Even more mysterious than Sky whales, the Sky Kraken is only ever spoken of in hushed tones.  Scarcely believed, as the Sky sailors who have survived encounters are usually a little loopy afterwards.  Their tall tale doesn't help much, either.

Sky sharks:  basically sharks, but airborne through the use of hydrogen bladders.  I figured we needed some kind of Sky predator, so why not.

Sky monkey: It flies and throws shit. The bane of all airships and their crew. You can be flying your ship over the water and wham! Poop hits your poop deck. You look up and then you get a load of crap to the face. Or, you are cleaning the engine when all of a sudden shit hits the fan. Your day is ruined by those pesky sky monkeys. Or you can capture one and train it to fly to enemy ships and throw shit at them! Brilliant tactic!

Sky Whale: self explanatory.

Swabbies/Powder Monkeys: They are a breed of clones all looking the same and wearing same clothing, bred from the gene pool of Keyvias by the Scientist Watchmaker in an attempt to make the perfect army all they succeeded in doing was creating an army on clones who run around the ship hitting stuff with their mallets in can only be guessed as an attempt to sabotage the deck of the ship they're on.

[AI]: these are the failed clones which make Swabbies look good, they sit on the furthest guns from the enemy and repair the least prioritised items, found wearing hazmat suits to stop spreading the mutations which made them failed experiments in comparison to their Swabbies counter parts.

Ice Troll: most common in the frozen wastes near the Fjords of the baronies the ice trolls are evolved and mutated apes from what was once a very long time ago a Zoo. Put next to a burley Anglean raider and you may not be able to tell the difference!

Newb-basher-newb: often a low level pilot, low intelligence and an ego the size of a galleon, these lowest of low creatures brag their superiority and insult their crew and ally ships vigorously, normally due to a single win or kill in a previous skirmish, out castes even by social outcasts these creatures live a lonely existance.

Carrion Rat

Once exclusive to the areas surrounding Arashi territory, raiders who have had infestations of these pests have dropped them into other passerby ships in an attempt to frighten the crew and leave the ship dazed and off-guard. However, for the merchant ships that survived these ambushes, the rats lived on, and soon expanded throughout the world. The rats are capable of wearing away stone, metal, and wood with their defecations, while at the same time gnawing their way through rations and store-house crates. Although the pests are easily stopped by a bullet, their small size and twitchy movements have caused job opportunities for vicious pyromaniacs looking for a civil way to roast animals alive.
