Linux Users: How are the mouse controls?
« on: June 18, 2014, 03:45:20 pm »
There have been some issues with getting the mouse sensitivity on Linux "just right". Something either with Linux OS or the way Unity receives/processes input from Linux doesn't work quite the same way as on PC, so we have a special case for handling mouse input on Linux.

We've recently gotten a few e-mails regarding this, and we'd like to get more feedback. If you are a Linux player, how are the mouse controls? Are they too sensitive/not enough/just right? Have you noticed any changes in the past few months?

Thanks everyone :)

Hi,

looking at my settings I set the mouse (and gun) sensitivity to 1.55 in-game (0.76 in the config file), so the default sensitivity is not enough for me (I changed my mouse recently but I don't remember if I adjusted those values). Looking at the configuration file on a system I played a couple of months ago (~9 month) the value is 0.46. I remember on the same computer with 0.46 I needed to push the sensitivity on Windows (7) to be on the same level (I believe it was ~1.33 in-game). Manufacturer of this computer is Acer, my current computer is from Lenovo, both are laptops running Debian unstable/experimental branch.

I didn't noticed any changes in the past month (or don't remember), also even I needed to adjust those settings I feel comfortable the way it is because you can still set the sensitivity to the preferred level.

Greetings
Lueosi

I don't have the numbers currently but I have them at the maximum value, and it is still slow to look around.

It feels quite flaky at times i remember needing to bring it down a little since it was too sensitive.

Met a new player today with the following specs:

Kubuntu 14.04 x64 with a Logitech G500 mouse
Nvidia GTX560
6gb of Dell Vostro 420 3gb ram
500gb Samsung SSD

And Guns is the ONLY Unity3D game that DOESN'T cause mouse problems for him. His username is GuruMeditation.

I have mouse sensitivity at max, still too slow.

Once the game bugged for me and it didn't hide my desktop mouse cursor and I got some interesting feedback how the mouse system appears to work behind the scenes.

I maybe totally wrong, but it seems that the game calculates delta of cursor movement between each frame update. When the FPS was high, the delta, for me at least, was very small. The game frequently snapped view to the cursor position and reseted it to the center of the screen. Because the FPS was high, this snapping occured very often and looking around was smooth, but painfully slow due to the small deltas. But when the FPS dropped, I saw the cursor travel further between the snapping and the game calculated higher deltas and looking around was faster than on high FPS, but jerkier. When the FPS dropped to very low (1-5*) the movement was way too fast, because I was accustomed to the extremely low response and the game counted very big deltas between the infrequent frame updates as I was swinging the mouse around.

In other words, the game appears to have a very peculiar way of doing mouse on Linux and it is varying on FPS and very likely on mouse DPI as well.

Hopefully this gets fixed at some point. If needed, I can do some testing.

* I will take this opportunity to thank the dev team for optimizing the particle count etc of the game. I no longer hit these extremely low FPS numbers.

Looking at my settings I have the mouse sensitivity at the maximum setting, it's probably a bit too sensitive but that is my own fault.  I don't think I have Linux specific problems with the mouse.

I believe the mouse problems I get, such as spinning around too far and getting disoriented are more caused by lag as the game will sometimes freeze and then kick back in and I'm facing in the wrong direction.

in my experiences the mouse was actually too sensitive when I was running around the ship and I actually turned it down a bit. Sometimes on the guns it seems a bit slow. I'm honestly not 100% on whether this is due to gun limitations themselves or mouse settings, as I have been mostly piloting lately. I'm using Linux MInt 17, if that's of any use.

I have been mostly fine with my current controls.

Any updates on this issue?

I noticed Unity3D 4.5.1p4 from July 3rd has an interesting changelog entry:

Linux: Fix regression in mouse look behaviour.

Any chance to get this regression fix included to Guns of Icarus Online?

Unity updates are happening, but it could turn into a large project, so it may be a decent amount of time before it gets successfully ported over.

Was the above fix backported into Guns of Icarus Online?

As Steam downloaded a 7.0MB patch file. It did not increase version number, but it did fix my mouse problem.  :o
