Gameplay / Re: Possible Galleon Meta Broadside?

no idea post nerf, it could very well still work.

however i would want someone who is very accurate with the minotaur. because it would not be quick burst down like the pure light gun pierce/explosive. you would have to rely on the minotaur to not only contribute piercing but also to keep damage off your hull so your top hades can get damage in consistently without too many repair interruptions. would probably be most effective against teams that are using brawler builds on a big open map such as dunes.

will definitely not be a super effective build, but i find using non-optimized builds more fun, its like GoI:O hard mode :P

It would also help prepare them for using chem spray.

this is a flawed way of thinking about game balance. the extinguisher and chem spray should be right around equal, with the advantage of using either one dictated by the composition of the teams in the game.  one should not be thought of as training wheels for the other.

the decision between the two should be more akin to the choice between standard repair and buffing engineer. it depends on who and what is on both teams in the game to decide between the two general engineer builds. The same must be true of the fire fighting tools and it wont be solved with just a simple buff/change to the extinguisher, it will require adjustments to every other part of the system as well.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: New component types?

i really like the idea of inter-ship communication being affected by a component, however it really only punishes you if you are already not working as a team (i.e. not sticking together).  Furthermore, I do not think the game is sufficient in scale (matches are generally short, take place in a relatively small area, and by a small number of people) to justify such a mechanic, but it would be fucking amazing.

Allied captain - "we see the enemy, cant mark they're in a cloud. dont know where the other one is th---- *static*"

I normally prefer to play 2v2's, so i just go into custom game, create one, hit recruit from queue. BAM! lobbies of icarus back in action :P

World / Re: Which existing airship belongs to which faction?

I always thought the Pyramidion was Angelean despite what the fluff might say. It seems to built around operating in a cold climate and by crew that favor pragmatism over artistry in their approach to war.

The back deck engine section is reasonably well sheltered and probably warm if the engines running.
The hole in the middle of the deck looks like it should be used for ice fishing.
It is one of the smallest balloon to ship mass ratios indicating either advanced technology or that warm air produces more lift in the area it operates.

It has the best configuration for chasing down fleeing enemies or doing a fighting retreat.
It is slow but well armored indicating that it intends to absorb damage rather than dance around it.
It uses only light weapons perhaps because heavy weapons are harder to maintain and more prone to malfunction in the cold.

these reasons may be why the angeleans favor the design, but it does not mean they invented it.

as angleans raid other territories quite frequently it would make sense that they would get their hands on a few stolen ships. with their lands being rich in techological ruins it would be fairly simple for them to copy the design and make a few modifications to suit their needs.

in a way it makes sense that they do not have a design originating in their culture, it is alot easier to modify a fully functioning airship than design one from the ground up. especially if you take that airship by force.

could you not just go into custom game and set up one and hit the recruit from queue button?

We need an English professor or something to diffuse this debate.

Can anybody ask Muse next fireside chat?

No we dont, its a rule of the English language, which we are all writing in here (except for that one french post :P). The only way to make a proper noun plural is to add an -s or, if the proper noun ends in s, x, z, ch, or sh, -es.
That is just how it works.

See, the real problem here is trying to make a plural of a proper name. It's like trying to take the plural of Paris. There are multiple places called Paris, but you don't call them Parises or Parii. You call them cities named Paris.

that just shifted the plural from Paris to city. that does not mean the plural of Paris is Paris.

if you keep the plural on the proper noun it would be Parises. "there are many Parises around the world"

because we are speaking English and dealing with a name, the rule for plural is you do not change spelling and add an s  (Smiths, multiple entities named Smith). if the proper noun ends in s and an es (Joneses multiple entities named Jones).

i use the word entity instead of people or persons because we are dealing with the personification of an object. When you address it by its nickname "Artemis" instead of Artemis Light Rocket Launcher, you are treating it as a person.

You guys are having trouble with a plural because you are using a slang form of the name.

The weapon's name is the Artemis Light Rocket Launcher, therefore, the plural is Artemis Light Rocket Launchers.

But if you really want a plural for the short version you would pluralize it in the same way you do any name, because you are calling it by a nickname.

so because it ends in s, Artemises is probably the most acceptable.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: New gun: no gun

i know this problem must exist because people keep bringing it up on the forums, but i seriously dont run into these kinds of players all that often, certainly not enough to call it a problem.

are you being abrasive to new players that join your ship? you cant expect them to instantly understand everything ever and do it perfectly; you have to take a little time to explain what they should be doing and the reasons for them doing that. explaining the reasons and mechanics behind what they are doing is very important, it is not a hard game to learn it is just different and people need some time to adjust. you cant just order people around because you are some imaginary captain, it wont work. treat people like they are people and they will be able to function as a crew member 9 times out of 10.  Frankly, i think the novice matches did alot of damage to the GoI:O community as a whole. Before novice matches most players were understanding of inexperience and not hostile to someone who clearly has never played the game before or has played very little, but that is a discussion for another thread.

that being said occasionally you do run into someone who despite everything will be a dedicated pain in the ass. but that is true of all online games and is a symptom of the platform not the playerbase.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Suggestion: gun buffs
« on: August 09, 2014, 09:56:42 am »
The flame is the most powerful weapon in the game
Without chemspray the flamethrower is easy mode, the GoI noobtube.
Without chem it's a point and kill weapon and the other ship has no chance if they cant kill/disable/get away in time. If you keep shooting them they will die with nothing they can do about it.

I'm not suggesting making flames overpowered, but I think they need some buffs.

lol wut.

seriously though, fire is more prevalent and more devastating now than it was when 1 stack of fire kicked you out of the guns.

and the flare does not need a buff. it is not designed as an offensive weapon. true it can function as one for the lulz but that does not make it one.  a screwdriver is not a hammer even if you are hitting something with the handle.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Tar and Sandstorm engine damage
« on: July 09, 2014, 08:52:08 pm »
Guns could take damage based on current speed, and engines on throttle setting. I actually thought sand worked like this at first because its intuitive, I would just sit still in a cloud because I thought it would do less(lol). You could moonshine right before a cloud and drift through it taking only gun damage, or you can go slowly through it and take minimal damage to everything.

I would like the quiet anticipation of sitting still with no visibility and no engine noise while you HOPE the enemy doesn't know where you are.

the sand storms are not clouds though. they are storms. the wind is whipping the sand around and that is what causes the damage (by gunking up your moving parts). really it probably would follow the same principles as running/walking in the rain. It depends on alot of variables, but generally running allows you to stay more dry, similarly speeding through the storm would generally make less sand get into your engines and guns.

even if you were to turn off your engines the damage would still be done. you could not turn your engines back on (or have your guns in proper working order) until they are cleaned out. as the game is just a simulation of what would really be happening (and for the sake of gameplay it is not a very accurate one), your engines and guns take damage to indicate the severity of the sand clogging and you hit them with your repair tool to simulate cleaning them out.

the same principle would govern tar clouds, but slightly differently. presumably the tar clouds have large amounts of soot that would gum things up in a similar manner to sand. and further more the smoke would probably choke out your engine making it harder for the internal combustion to take place (and yes they are internal combustion not steam as some people believe, why would moonshine or kerosene affect a steam engine)

World / Re: Fjord Baronies
« on: July 05, 2014, 02:26:37 pm »
Random question that recently popped up in my head:

What's the corresponding adjective for the Fjord Baronies?

A person from the Yesha Empire can be called a Yeshan, we obviously have Anglean Raiders and a chicken from the Arashi League is most certainly an Arashi chicken. But what about the Baronies?
I believe the adjective describing a Baron is "baronial", so would you refer to people from the Baronies as Baronials? Or maybe Fjordlanders?

honestly the fjord baronies are one of the most complex and mysterious factions as of right now, they just haven't been fleshed out as much as other factions (in a public document anyway) and feudal systems are very dense social structures. so we really wont know for sure until we are given more information.

but if i had to hazard a guess, it would depend on how closely you are looking at it. someone within the society would most likely identify with the particular barony they live in. while, people from other societies would probably identify everyone from there collectively. and i think something along the lines of fjordlanders is close to what would be used. as the kingdom is always referred to in reference to the fjords (at least in everything i have read).

this is a great suggestion.

as long as there is some sort of review process to make sure translations are accurate.
