What I remember most clearly about him is the funny anecdote when someone once commented about his height (Napoleon was a short fellow).

The person said, "I am at least a head taller than you".

To which Napoleon pulled out his sword (or was it a dagger?) and said, "Well, we can easily remedy that.."

Not sure if that really happened, but it is a well-known historical anecdote.  :D

Was that on Duel? Because I too had a match since last patch where we spawned inside each other on duel. Might wanna check out spawn points. :)

Feedback and Suggestions / Be an Engineer and Play Faster
« on: November 05, 2014, 04:44:19 am »
When I'm searching for a match as a crew member, but only pilots are needed at that moment, matchmaker pops up a message that goes something like: "Switch to pilot and play faster", meaning that I could get a spot immediately if I decided to be a pilot instead of a crew member.

It would be great if we had a similar function for gunners and engineers. Recently, I've found it increasingly difficult to get a good match as a gunner, because whenever I search for matches as a gunner, matchmaker keeps throwing me onto ships which already have one (or two, in some cases). Then I usually leave the match, because nobody likes a second gunner, and I try searching for a new one with matchmaker. Usually, what happens is that matchmaker throws me into the very same lobby again, quite often in the last second so that I do not even have time to leave anymore.

Instead of that, it would be great if matchmaker informed me that there are no gunner spots available, but I could play immediately if I switched to engineer. This would save me the frustration of joining a 2-gunner ship in the last second of the lobby time, and it would also save the frustration of trying and re-trying to join matches as a gunner. It would also inform new players about ideal ship/crew member arrangements so they would not think that 2 or 3 gunners are an effective and working build on, let's say, a squid. Thos who still wish to play as second gunners would have a chance to switch back once they arrived at the lobby, but they would at least be aware of the possible disadvantage of being a second gunner.

Right now searching for a match as a gunner is so risky that I often think it would be best to start searching as an engineer even if I don't want to play engineer at all. I realize that with the small playerbase it is difficult to fill ships with engineers, let alone find a match for each gunner (usually only 4 gunners per match are needed, or even less, as we tend to play 2v2s more often than 3v3s), but in my opinion an AI engineer is still better than 2 or 3 gunners on a ship. Not to mention that second/third gunners won't have much fun either if their ship is not successful and both the captain and their team is unhappy about their presence.

Finally I had some time to upload this.  :) 1v1 mine match with 3 gunners on the ship just before last patch. I recorded mostly to note kills, but it is fun to watch too. I tried to cut scenes to make it shorter, but then I loved watching us run around like crazy when everything was red so it turned out still quite long. And don't mind my music, was listening to silly stuff.  :P

Also, I love it how, as the only person with an extinguisher on the ship, I keep on shooting while stuff is burning happily down at the sides.  :D

I could find only 2 kills on our part, but I think there was one that I didn't manage to record because I was facing the other way. (Spectators said we had 3 kills at the end, if I remember well). Plus, once we killed ourselves by detonating a bunch of mines, theoretically, that's a kill too.  :P

Edit:
My favourite line was: "Maybe we should've brought buff hammers.."  :D

General Discussion / Re: Hiding levels
« on: October 29, 2014, 05:53:52 am »
Showing levels wasn't just a way of letting more experienced players recognize player competence, but it was also a way to help new players judge the level of their enemies so that they could decide whether they wanted to go against them or not. I used to tell new players to watch out for player levels and choose matches based on that. As a level one captain you might want to reconsider going against two level 30 ones and you might want to find another lobby with people around your level. (Please do not tell me that levels show no relation to player experience or competence, in most cases it is quite easy to guess match outcomes based on just that single aspect.)

With level visibility partially gone, experienced players can still easily judge the situation (you can click on names or just check out ship loadouts, look at crew setups, familiar names, let's be honest, this is a small community, we know each other etc), but new players are at a disadvantage because they cannot even rely on level indicators anymore. Also, I am not quite convinced that one's hidden match rating is a valid indicator of one's actual in-game performance, so you can never be entirely sure that the people you were placed against by the matchmaker system will really be at your level and competence. Even if there was no human involvement in lobby setups, the glicko system could overlook certain aspects of the gameplay.

Just to give an example, I often like to join suicide sides for fun, eg ships that the captains have abandoned in ongoing matches or ships with three powder monkeys on it. Even if realize that I am on a losing side, I often stay through the match, especially if I had fun with some players on the ship. Because of that I have a lot of lost games, and I guess my rating is quite low (in fact I noticed that I keep getting placed by matchmaker into lobbies with level 10 people around hehehe). Yet, if I am placed into a good crew on a strong side, I can be as competent as many other players whose rating must be much higher than mine. The rating system will mark me as a weaker member, and will consider the match "balanced", but we will still most likely win the round. Wouldn't my actual player level be more accurate in this case?

Also, what is the point of hiding levels before a match starts, and revealing them during the match (tabbing) or after it? It feels like a bad surprise for low levels (BEFORE MATCH: "Hey guys, don't worry, we should be fine, it's gonna be fun" DURING MATCH: "Dang it, look at all those high levels on the other side!!")  :D

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: XP system seems wonky
« on: October 25, 2014, 08:09:17 am »
Somehow the xp system should also take into consideration who you are winning or losing against.

(In theory matchmaker should make sure we do not end up with stacked lobbies, but there is simply too much human involvement and too small playerbase for it to work properly. And well, if you restrict the system more, it will ruin the healthy amount of flexibility this game still has and should have.)

Naturally, matches won should give you more xp than matches lost, but if those matches were won against players much lower in levels than the average of your team, then there should at least be some xp penalty involved when calculating the final points. There simply needs to be an inbuilt reason or reward why players would want to balance teams and stay on the weaker side even if they recognize it as the weaker side. And this reason should not be the goodwill of people, nor the promise of a good game, but something that has to do with levelling or xp. The real xp achievement recognized by the game should be the case when you beat people whose average levels are at around your level (eg. plus/minus 10 levels) rather than beating whoever who happens to be around. When beating people whose average level is much lower than yours, the game should reward little xp. People would be more willing to scramble if having balanced teams meant more xp at the end. Again, the problem with this system is the small playerbase, eg. some of us tend to play at times when there aren't enough players with the same levels to fight.

As long as winning earns you 1k xp no matter what whereas losing will earn only around a couple of hundreds, no player in their right mind will stay on an obvious losing side for too long.

With my two matches, I do remember unlocking an achievement during the high xp one, which might explain at least partly why xp was higher, but other than that, I also remember fixing nothing but a few engines that the captain damaged with tools.

I have a similar problem with the current xp system. With the current settings, the system actually supports stacking instead of promoting a well-balanced spread of players.

Yesterday MM dropped me into a lobby where I could tell from the start that I was on the losing side. The enemy team had two experienced captains with lots of experienced crew members whereas we had a moderately experienced and a totally new player as captains. I could have switched sides before the match, but I decided to stay on the losing side partly because I did not care that seriously about the outcome, and partly because I hoped to gain some xp in spite of being in the obviously weaker team.

During the match I tried to be as good an engineer as possible, I gave advice to the new captain, I rebuilt lots of stuff, chem sprayed, did all I could to help the situation (forgot to mention that we had 2 gunners on the ship and I did not manage to convince any of them to switch, in fact nobody listened to me on the team throughout the whole match). So I did my best as an only engineer, ran around a lot, but we lost 5-0 due to our team setups.

At the end I got 200 xp and I thought that it really wasn't worth staying on that side anymore, so I moved on.

In the next round I jumped into a match again where MM placed me on the obvious winning side. Again, I could tell from the start that we would be the winners. I kept sightseeing throughout the match as an engineer, because the enemy did not even care to shoot back, and at the end I got almost 2000 xp.

I think staying on a weaker side and doing lots of repairs should be more rewarded by the system than winning 5-0 just because you happen to be on the more experienced team. I realize this is difficult to adjust, but I'd agree with CitizenFry that the current xp reward system does not reflect your individual achievements in matches.

General Discussion / Re: Update this week?

There is a Steam post with a video about the update where you can glimpse into the upcoming changes a bit, but judging from that post it seems that the update will arrive only next week. (The post was made this week, and it says update will be out next week).

here is the link to the sneak peek video:
