The Lounge / Re: Introductions!
« on: May 15, 2013, 01:06:54 am »
Hello!

I am Nostalgium, and recently found this game when I was linked a YouTube video of a crew running around a ship that was constantly on fire while panicking. As I was watching, I thought "Yes." and went on Steam to buy it before the video was even over. It has yet to disappoint me.

I tend to captain the Freckled Crow, a Pyramidion which's engines I abuse terribly, and enjoy casual banter with my crew as we pluck targets out of the sky. Love the community I've seen thus far, and looking forward to flying with you.
Awesome, hope to see you in the skies sometime!

Guess I'll add myself, no reason not to

Hey guys, I'm Grim. I first heard of this game from a Yogscast video months ago but never bothered to buy it, mostly because I didn't really have any means to do so at the time. While browsing the Unity3d website I saw Guns of Icarus under "games made with Unity" and remembered wanting to try it, so after looking at a few videos I ended up making the purchase. Definitely not turning back! After nearly three years of playing League of Legends a new game is very refreshing, I love the community and Muse is a great company that works hard to make us happy.

You may see me spontaneously chatting in the regional chat at random parts of the day or jumping into random games to Engineer for a ship that needs me. If not I'll probably be flying my ship The Flying Pig. If you ever want to join up with me let me know, I'm always happy to have more friends.

See you all in the skies soon hopefully

Ahh, had a couple of friends ask me this same thing and I wasn't sure either. Thanks Shinkurex

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Ship Loadouts
« on: May 14, 2013, 11:36:21 pm »
I don't have much need for this yet since I don't know a ton about the game and keep my ships on the same loadout for the most part right now, but I can definitely see the advantages. +1 to the idea :D

That would make it easier to do slower turns without having to keep pressing the key (I imagine a controller is better for this too), and adds an interesting possibility that I had been waiting for a good place to mention... Currently, you can set the throttle and leave the helm and it'll stay as you set it, but the same can't be said for the auto-centering wheel... If it didn't automatically change, the captain could set it to an angle and leave the helm to do something else, and the angle would persist. Maybe this would be too "good" though?
Honestly I'd say if people were to pull off doing that in an effective way then power to them. Doesn't sound like something that would be too abused to me

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Future of mapvoting
« on: May 14, 2013, 11:29:11 pm »
Well I say why have one when you can have both

Lobby makers should be able to choose whether they want map voting or to just use a random map, everyone can choose what they prefer that way.

I need a force start over here

Good job to all of you, my friends had bought the game right before that rush but got a good impression of the game even with the lag

It isn't currently a feature in the game and not sure if Muse intends to ever do that. I see its benefits (such as people not paying attention when you're just typing) but I think when (if?) we get a chat filter it will be easier nonetheless.

Feedback and Suggestions / Re: Lock Mouse to the Screen
« on: May 14, 2013, 07:17:11 am »
Happens to me too. A quick fix for you maybe: double tap escape while in game (just opening and closing the menu) and it should keep it from happening until you alt tab. That is, assuming we have the same situation of course

This is pretty much the first thing I check for with new games, I would love to see it added to GoI and I know a few of my friends would too

Guides / Re: One Guide to teach them all?
« on: May 14, 2013, 12:03:14 am »
Three Guides for the Gunner-noobs shooting the flaks,
Seven for the Pilots on their helm and throne,
Nine for Engineers to give some whacks,
One for the Muse Dev who's mistake-prone
In the Land of Burren where the Sand attacks.
One Guide to school them all, One Guide to find them,
One Guide to bring them all and in Icarus bind them
In the Land of Burren when the Sand attacks.
This is beautiful

Just came up with a possible idea (may not be plausible but i'll state it anyway) : Maybe allow spectators to run around on ships of their choosing so they can view battles as if they were on the ship (which they basically are) while remaining invisible to the actually players.

I disagree with this part from a spectating commentating standpoint. You don't want to limit the screen to having feet on the ground and slow down/limit the possible angles and shots. It'd be better to just use a more open camera in pretty much every situation (not sure how the ship-specific camera works right now, I believe it is just locked to rotate around the ship at a closer view). The ship view camera right now is pretty good, letting you get an easy free roam view of an entire ship would be nice but I think it would be too tedious to do during a match when you're commentating.

There's also the route dota 2 took to become a popular e-sport (other than good spectator mode) which was a relatively large tournament with a large prize pool. When competitive gamers saw how much they could make playing dota they flocked to it. Now, I realize that this was only possible because Dota 2 was developed by Valve who have a huge amount of revenue at their disposal, but money can be replaced with other rewards (maybe in game items that only tournament winners receive...or anything!). Maybe an in game tournament that happens every couple weeks with varying rewards would draw more players as well! Whatever you guys decide to do, I think the cog system is an awesome step in the right direction and I can't wait to see how this game develops.
An example of the in-game rewards you mention: Pretty much all smaller League of Legends tournaments that are aknowledged by Riot Games provide champion skin bundles, Riot Points, and a tournament exclusive Triumphant Ryze skin. With the way this game is built a very similar thing could be done.

For the stage that this game is in I think the spectator system is pretty good. It can always use some improvement but it definitely has the necessities down. One thing I did notice when watching the last Cogs though was that commentators didn't go in for the closer view on ships as much as they could though. People (primarily those that aren't as into GoI) don't find much interest just watching the ships blasting at each other from a long distance, it is more exciting going in and seeing the players (most notably engineers) running around and working together. Find a good mix of the two types of views and you're golden.

Maybe I'll take a look at more of Qwerty's stuff to see if I can give more feedback. He has been doing a good job so far and I do thing e-sports in any competitive type game can be very beneficial to the community, the game, etc.

Out of my friends the classification you put pretty much hit it on the spot. Most of me and my friends are LoL players so we all love the teamwork and various strategies that can be pulled off in GoI. I really hope the community continues to grow as much as it has the past couple of days thanks to TGS, it would be great to see the game expand more and possibly add in some of those things for PvP that you mentioned.

Heres to the great GoI community, the new recruits, and Muse for being such a great team of developers.
