I like the way its used in Tribes and I'm sure it would be pretty good on GoI too so ?1 for Shazbot

I know Muse is aware the chat needs some touch ups, especially now with the larger community. I think someone said they are working on that too but don't quote me on that, hopefully someone else can come confirm.

General Discussion / Re: An idea for teaching mechanics
« on: May 16, 2013, 01:11:00 pm »
Just to clarify, the four hours in Sandbox is cumulative, it doesn't have to all be in one session!

There is a "Teacher" privilege that allows high-level players to enter beginner-only matches, which would be the best place to achieve these higher-level teaching achievements. Right now the privilege is only available to devs and CAs, but we're looking at ways of granting it to other players, possibly as an unlock for one of the earlier teaching achievements.

if you have more ideas on how to improve the system, please share!

If you open up the "teacher" privilege to everyone who gets achievement x, you might want to implement a mechanic that limits non-beginners in beginner matches to 1 per ship or something like that :)
I agree, wouldn't want higher level players flowing back into beginner lobbies

I could see some repercussions in terms of balance but in general I think this is a pretty neat idea. Like Hamster said I think it would be a cool thing to consider for Adventure mode.

Here is something to think about. If people are saying that rank does not matter, maybe that is because rank is not accurately displaying a person's experience and skill in their role?

It doesn't display your experience and skill. I view it like a certification. It doesn't necessarily indicate any level of skill, it just shows that you have met the basic criteria to pass.

In short, your level doesn't show your skill at all, and I think a lot of us like it that way.
To add on with what Charon is saying, I don't think rank showing skill is a good thing at all anyways. It just spawns people that try to pull rank superiority and develops egos in people. It is much better to have skill as a more abstract thing and leave it to be decided on the battlefield.

Awesome, thanks for replying to this and commenting on that extinguisher achievement. Muse has definitely made it into my list of favorite developers right with Bungie, Riot, and Supergiant. Keep up the good work :)

As far as other achievements, I know there are a few on my list right now I'll probably end up having to go out of my way to get but they aren't really harmful to my experience in any way (put out fires 100 times with fire extinguishers, 8 wins +40 repairs on scrap, 60 hull repairs on squid, etc). Only other one that isn't in there is a spotting achievement that I just realized requires me to be level 5 to get. :P

Hi everyone,

I'm a new player aswell, I usually play as gunner or engineer and I'm looking for a crew to fly with. Are you still looking for new recruits?
I'm no dutchman but I'd be happy to play with you as well, just shoot me a message in game sometime. You may see me chatting in regional.

I'd be glad to show you some of the ropes as well. We've got all sorts of ropes here! Long ropes, short ropes, little stringy ropes tied into fancy knots, all the ropes!

Hello Gents, I would love to join your ranks if it would be alright with you!

A bit about me:
I'm 18 years old and I am from the U.S. I haven't been playing for too long but I feel like I'm a pretty decent player, I actually did a few games with Wazulu on my first day of having the game if I remember correctly. I've mostly been playing engineer and feel that is where I am strongest but I would love to learn how to captain from some of the more experienced players within GoI.

Awesome to hear you're enjoying yourself as well! :D

I primarily have played Engineer but after some games as captain it has definitely begun to grow on me, my favorite games are the ones where other captains communicate with each other and we pull off coordinated movements and fights.

Hope to see you in game sometime, with or against. Shoot me a message if you ever want to play together, always happy to have more friends.

Glad I found this topic before making one of my own! ;)

I personally like the way the leveling system works in this game but some friends of mine dislike it a good bit, so I'm definitely interested in how everyone else feels.

I like that it isn't a linear task of just playing game after game and that you need to do a bit more to gain levels, it makes leveling more interesting and also it gives achievements purpose (I never really found much interest in achievements before). Its good that they encourage people to do different things, the main negative that I see is on the extreme end of that though. People desperately trying to get achievements so they can level can cause some confusion for people playing with them and throw everyone off. A primary example of this was when I played with a gunner that was running around not accomplishing much when our ship was getting much, after the game I learned this was because he had a fire extinguisher for his tool so he could get a multi classing achievement.

Its alright if I know to work around things like that, and most of the other achievements are for the most part ok, but things like that can be a bit painful to deal with when the person trying to get achievements doesn't even say anything about it.

1- Join as a team. This is just pure quality of life. Let me put together a party and join games in batch, all of us in the same ship(s).
4- Leaver punishment (sensible punishment obviously, but it is necessary). I really like how Smite does this, and I would do it similarly: There is a passive bonus that keeps compounding as far as you never leave a game, until 100%, in which case it gives you a substantial reward in points after each game. If you leave once it resets to 0 and puts you on a rejoin cooldown.
5- Reward system aside from achievements, such as costumes, flags or ship decals for reaching higher leagues.
1- I believe Muse has said they are currently working on things with the match system, specifically being able to join with your crew.
4- I think what you suggest here specifically isn't that bad, I definitely wouldn't say anything as harsh as games like LoL would do though because honestly things happen where people have to leave and this game lets you compensate for that loss a lot more than others.
5- I do think aesthetics for ships would be pretty cool, and maybe being able to put a flag with a certain emblem up on it.

Rankings and Reward systems foster a type of competitiveness that does not mesh well with the nature of the current GOI community. I can be cursing the enemy ships and preying for their deaths in game, but the moment we are back in lobby we are all friends again, and can talk about what we did right and wrong. I have advised captains on the other team on what mistakes they made on their ship loadout. I have left fantastically coordinated teams to balance the sides in the name of fair play. I do this because nothing is at stake except how much people are enjoying the game. The more people enjoy the game the further we will be from ghost town the original GOI multiplayer lobbies became.
I completely agree that rankings and stuff like that can have a negative impact on the community in negative ways. But I also think regardless of having them, as this community grows more toxic players will join as well. Unfortunately, it won't always be COMPLETELY the super nice community we have here if it continues to grow but there are things we can do to avoid making it too bad. One of the reasons the LoL community is so notoriously bad is in my opinion for two reasons:
1. It is a very open game free for anyone to play, toxic players that are removed keep coming back and overall the community is just massive
2. It is not only a competitive game but each of your games are heavily reliant on every single one of your teammates. Your whole team doing great and one person doing poorly can result in a quick defeat, as well as any leavers. I feel GoI has a better balance towards avoiding this feeling, having good teamwork in the game but also not making it an instant loss if you have a new player with you.

With that said I am kind of on the line of having a ranking system or not. I enjoy having designated competitive matches that I can just jump into but I also dislike the negative vibe the system brings with it. Can we think of other thing that can be done instead? We have the cogs of course, and as the community grows more and more there may be some other little tournaments popping up. But what are some other good alternatives to bringing a more competitive environment without a too negative impact on the community?
