Sunday Community Skirmish on Facebook
SCS VoDs
The Sunday Community Skirmish is a double elimination tournament event that runs every week with occasional breaks. All matches are 2v2, time limited best of 1s and are normally streamed live on Twitch. Any team of 8 players is welcome to participate.

This signup thread is for the Skirmish at 7pm UTC on Sunday 12th April (3pm EDT) The event is normally streamed by Fourth Oracle, as well as other streamers who vary from week to week. The details of all streams will be made clear on the day of or day before the event. The event has an expected runtime of 2-4 hours.

Signups should be posted in this thread and include a Steam/Skype contact and team name. Signups close at midday (UTC), or 8 AM EDT, on Saturday the 11th of April. Please try to avoid last minute signups.
The bracket and map rolls will be available soon after signups close. (brackets at http://goiocommunity.challonge.com/)
Participants will be contacted when their matches are starting, although it's encouraged to consult the bracket and keep track of the streams so you have a decent idea of when you will be playing.

The complete rules can be found in this document. There is now also a brief summary of the ethos behind the rules and structure of the event.

Please only sign up if you are confident of your ability to produce a full team of 8 players.

The event will continue to follow DOUBLE ELIMINATION format with best of one matches!
Time limit per match remains at 20 minutes, without extra time. Have a look at
this if you don't know how double elimination works.

New Teams Guide:
  • A team needs at least 8 players, all of whom should be available at the event's start time and for the duration of the event. You do not need to include an official roster in your signup. Teams are not required to have any clan affiliation and players are not required to always play for the same team (however playing for multiple teams on one day is not allowed).
  • Signups close at midday (UTC) (8 AM EDT) on the Saturday preceding the event. Your signup needs a team name and at least one contact, preferably with an emergency steam/skype contact. At least one of your contacts needs to be in-game when your matches start, otherwise we may be unable to find you and have to skip your matches.
  • The event bracket, map rolls and a full schedule will be available in this thread on the Saturday preceding the event.
  • When we are preparing to start your match, an organiser will contact you in game with the password and invite you to join them in the lobby. We normally start preparing lobbies 10-20 minutes before the event start.
  • Matches do not start at a set time, so it is best to be in game and ready to go for the entire duration of the event until you are eliminated (or win).
  • The stream links will also be made available in this thread. It's often helpful to watch the streams to have an idea of when your match will be starting.

Bracket
Match will be streamed on Daniel's stream.

Since there's only one match, we suggest it is played as a Bo5. This is optional for the teams, as they can just concede at any point if it is not looking very interesting.

Maps:
Battle on the Dunes
Canyon Ambush
Paritan Rumble
Battle on the Dunes
Fight over Firnfield

Just in case anyone thought otherwise, SCS will run tomorrow.

Community Events / [NEW EVENT] SCS Grand Slam Tournament
« on: March 31, 2015, 07:58:32 pm »

SCS VoDs [UPDATED!]
The SCS Grand Slam Jam Tournament is a triple elimination tournament event that runs every week and will never have breaks, ever. Most matches are 2v2, time limited best of 5s and are normally streamed live on Twitch. Any team of 8 players, except, quite a lot of teams and players, are welcome to participate.

That's right, a new event! Not only that, it takes place on Saturday, one of the 6 days of the week previously unfortunate enough not to have its own SCS event.
The new event will take place every Saturday at 3PM EST. In light of the success of the new double elimination format, we are upgrading to the inherently superior triple elimination format and hope to implement this in all of our events soon.

We have arranged that each week the winner of the event receives a trip to Disneyland Paris with all expenses funded from previous SCS profits. You will be joined by the entire GOIO dev team.

Signup Rules:
  • All players must be in-game level 30 or under. This is part of our initiative to draw in the real players of GOIO, people who can't afford to spend their whole lives grinding up a high character level and the associated advantages, such as skill, which imbalance competitive anyway.
  • Ryders and SPQR may not participated under any circumstances, they just try too hard.
  • Mad Hatters get a bye to the final because they are obviously the best team but just not tryhard enough to claim the title.
  • Signups end in 24 hours, at midnight UTC 1/04/2014.
  • Signups must include a team name, three (3) captain photos and billing address.
  • Parental consent is required.
Event Rules:
  • All matches are on Paritan Rumble, we feel it's the most stable map and will minimise the recent problems due to slowdown.
  • Following the success of the double elimination event, more elimination is obviously better. The new event is triple elimination.
  • Event is best of 5 because a problem of Bo1 SCS and indeed many Bo1 events is that it is apparently too "random" and Mad Hatters keep getting knocked out early by flukes.
  • 10 hours are allowed for the event to finish as signups are unlimited and we are expecting a lot of interest.
  • Teams have been under stress by the short lobby timers, so we're extending it to 20 minutes.
  • Many games have been finishing without hitting the extended time limit, so it's too long. Match time limit is 5 minutes.
  • Only allowed ships are Goldfish and Pyramidion in order to minimise gimmick playstyles. You can still fly galleon if you need to be hipster.
  • Streamers are the only guys who seem to know what they're doing, and are held back by the limited perspective of spectators. They will now commander ships in-event to help you guys get your shit together. This rules also applies to referees, our job is too boring.
  • In light of recent complaints about the rules, there are no rules.
  • Skrim also told me some other rules to add but I forgot them. These will be phased in across the next few weeks of the event's inevitably endless lifetime.
  • only servers are EU and Oceania
Please only sign up if you are confident of your ability to produce a full team of 8 inexperienced players who aren't Ryders or SPQR.

A word from the SCS team:

Hey guys!

At SCS we take all our participants' feedback seriously. Keeping our fingers firmly on the pulse of community opinion, we've identified what is missing from GOIO's competitive scene right now. An event that is both open to all non-tryhard players and eliminates the threat of constant stomps by Ryders, or having to play against the Ryders, or SPQR who are, when you really think about it, quite similar to the Ryders.
We've noticed a few events targeted at the Saturday slot that reminded us that people actually play GOIO on Saturdays. But there don't seem to be a lot of uptake of these events. I mean, billions of people are awake on Saturday. Surely they could be playing GOIO? Maybe there just aren't good enough events on that day?
Hopefully this gives you a little insight into the long-planned event that we're introducing. We hope you are as excited as we are.

We'd like to apologise for the continuing VoD delays, we really shouldn't have got your hopes up because there are no VoDs, SCS is faked it's been a busy week with the preparations for the new event.

We should also note that we are taking art admissions to our tournament logo for 24 hours. Tournament will not run if there are no logo submissions.

37
Apologies that VoDs are still not getting online on schedule. My understanding is that this was due to an unexpected problem and VoDs should start getting up faster and more reliably soon. All matches of the last few weeks have been recorded and should be on their way to the channel.

General Discussion / Re: So long and thanks for all the fish.
« on: March 29, 2015, 06:40:13 pm »
I'm sorry to hear that SCS would play a role in anybody's decision to stop playing GOIO.

However you do seem to have a few misconceptions about SCS that I think may have twisted your perception of events. Most of them have been covered, but the "official" view is just a tiny bit different. ^^

 - SCS is in no way affiliated with the Community Ambassador program, except by the coincidental participation of Community Ambassadors as volunteer referees, streamers or organisers.
- these coincidental volunteer CAs don't get to ad lib the rules; same as any ref, they have a clearly defined set of rules to follow. This eliminates time wasting in an event that is pretty bad for going over schedule, and ensures all teams get roughly the same treatment.

- When are rules are enforced inflexibly, this is not because we are "legalistic" or have abandoned principles of fun in our attempt to create a competitive event. It is to save time and prevent confusion for referees and players. (we are often pretty time starved ^^)
- SCS is a competitive event though, so you have to appreciate the rules do exist for reasons and we can't just throw in exceptions on a whim. In the end competitive play without rules is just pub lobbies. ^^

Substitutions:
The "no playing for more than one team" rule has no exceptions because it is impossible to tell when an exception is appropriate. If a team need 1 extra player, maybe it doesn't matter that that player has already competed. But it could be 2 players, or that player could be a pilot, or just exceptionally good at their role and then the match is starting to get heavily skewed and things start feeling unfair. When and when isn't it appropriate to allow exceptions to this rule? It's not really possible to decide, so we do not ask referees to make that decision.

Spectating:
There are only 4 spectator slots. Not everyone can spectate. Why should you be allowed to spectate? Everyone else makes do with the streams.
There's also a load of side issues like cheating, that extra spectators may cause lag, that one time that this guy not only spectated but clogged up match chat, it's good to be instantly clear who the ref is, etc.

The referee did act in the spirit of both rules. You could argue that the rule was flawed (I'd disagree). But I think the important thing to establish here is that the treatment you received firstly, has been thought out and is not just a case of blanket application of rules that didn't account for your situation, and secondly was the work of 1 or 2 SCS organisers who define the event's rules and policies, and coincidentally are not CAs, rather than any failing of judgement on the part of the referee you interacted with or any flaw in the CA program. So if you are determined to resent our policy, at least do not tar the CA program or the community at large with the same brush.

EDIT: forgot to add, sorry if the referee was impolite. Not much more to add on that. Don't think it is an issue that has come up before.

Minor change: the matches on Heldi's stream (CGH) will be refereed by me instead of Skrim.

This week's organisational contact is Ayetach.

On Heldigris' stream: (reffed by Skrimskraw)

42
Just a little feedback: Could you use different passwords for separate lobbies (or rounds)? I know it kinda complicates things, but so does a random stranger joining on a panicking disorganized all-out-of-subs team :P
the solution to that is for teams not to hand out passwords. If you feel it's really a problem we can always ask people to be more careful about sharing the password, but there's no way we'll use multiple passwords per event. Too much potential for confusion.

43
Notice that as Europe is joining America in DST the event time has been brought back an hour earlier. This will result in no effective change for Europeans and a return to the previous effective time (1 hour earlier) for Americans.

Progress continues with VoD uploads. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4ZHvlfkKDmn6KwN8uscZjg
This week's VoDs should be up in the next day or two.
