Reminder to those who signed up single ships: make sure to contact the other half-team captains to find a partner. You won't be officially registered until both ships have confirmed they're flying together.

Bare in mind that on the biggest of big weekends, GOIO hits a couple thousand concurrents, and during less active times, hundreds. The game you're using for reference measures it's concurrents in the millions. Advanced ELO-based ranking and match systems just don't scale down well to the size of player-base there currently is.

One thing I could see as being pretty rad, as a significantly advanced spectator feature, is a picture-in-picture player cam. If a ship is being gunned down, for instance, pop up a small window on the lower quadrant of each side with the player-perspective of attacking gunner and defending engineer.
That would be so difficult XD, I mean if you're talking in game implementation, even if it was the casters, they'd still need a studio lol.

If we did get to the point where being considered "esports" was realistic, tournaments would probably have a dedicated observer who controlled the broadcast's camera.

Just came up with a possible idea (may not be plausible but i'll state it anyway) : Maybe allow spectators to run around on ships of their choosing so they can view battles as if they were on the ship (which they basically are) while remaining invisible to the actually players.

I disagree with this part from a spectating commentating standpoint. You don't want to limit the screen to having feet on the ground and slow down/limit the possible angles and shots. It'd be better to just use a more open camera in pretty much every situation (not sure how the ship-specific camera works right now, I believe it is just locked to rotate around the ship at a closer view). The ship view camera right now is pretty good, letting you get an easy free roam view of an entire ship would be nice but I think it would be too tedious to do during a match when you're commentating.

Gameplay / Re: GUNS Balance Questions and Concerns v1.2

This sort of removes the point of a Carronade.
-Light Carronade
--Changed pitch angles (-40 to 35 changed to -30 to 10, skewed towards upwards aiming)
-Heavy Carronade
--Changed pitch angles (-20 to 35 changed to -30 to 10, skewed towards upwards aiming)

Not at all. It just means the pilot has to maintain a closer altitude to the target, rather than lazily hovering above and relying on the turning arc to carry the build.

Gameplay / Suicide - risk/reward option or cheap tactic?
« on: May 12, 2013, 06:24:09 am »
If you haven't seen the BFS vs Destructoid match from yesterday's Cogs, here is a timestamped link to the event in question:
http://www.twitch.tv/qwerty2jam/b/402287974?t=100m40s

Summary: BFS's squid survives a 1v2 situation on Canyon Ambush with 10% remaining health, books it back to their spawn to meet up with the respawned junker, and then proceeds to kill his own ship with tar. This allows him to respawn with full health, without giving any points to the opposing team.

Most people's immediate response (as was mine) would be something along the lines of: "that's pretty dumb, that should not be allowed". It's a valid response, and banning the tactic might be the correct decision. I would however like to explore the other side of the argument.

Suicide-ing your ship has risks. You're completely vulnerable while attempting, and also leave your teammate stranded while you're respawning. If it remains an allowed tactic, teams will be aware of this option, and will be incentivized to chase down damaged ships, rather than say, camping at their spawn and waiting for them to come back. If you're expecting a ship to attempt suicide, a stealth approach with the goal of "last hitting" may become a valid counter, giving you the "free" kill of the low ship and probably also their teammate. Success rate would vary a lot based on positioning and what map is being played, since you will announce to the server that you are killing components.

Just wondering what everyone else's thoughts are.

Why would you still try to use a group stage format if there are only five participants? Does this also mean there is going to be a 7 team bracket next weekend?

As another multimon user, I also run virtually every multiplayer game in windowed mode. Borderless windowed mode is a feature I would like to see.

Some of the positions in the ship might change. Did you want that if it does?
That's really up to you. Team rosters will be gathered and posted publicly in a Google document as we get closer to the end of signups. That would be a good time to look it over and check if it's still accurate.

I'd also like to make clear that signup order has no effect on group placement. All groups will be randomly assigned when signups close.

How many ships per stream?
Per stream? It's a 2v2 event, if that's what you're asking.

Q&A

Why isn't Labyrinth in the map pool?
Being a control point map in an otherwise all deathmatch tournament, it brings some overhead. CP games on average are longer than their DM counterparts, likely increasing the length of the tournament. It also introduces another complicating factor teams to have to prepare for, being a dynamically different game mode. That being said, if there is enough demand for it, or Muse produces a deathmatch version before the tournament starts, it may be added to the pool.

Where are all the thread graphics?
I am not a graphic designer. If there's anyone who's willing to help in that area, please hit me up. Your assistance would be very appreciated. :)

The Format
The Sky Tournament is a four week, 2v2 event where 16 teams are whittled down through multiple stages, until we have one we can crown the champion of Icarus. We begin with two weeks of Group Stage. Each team is seeded into a group with three others, and between them, five best of one matches will be played. Win two, and you've advanced to the championship bracket. Lose two, we hope to see you for the next tournament. Two teams from each group will advance.

Once we have our eight teams who've passed the group stage, they will be seeded into the Championship Bracket for the third weekend. The four quarterfinals matches will be played simultaneously, as to not have an unduly long round. The semifinals will then leave us with two remaining teams.

You have a week to prepare for your last challenge, for on the fourth weekend we have the Finals Match. Our two top teams will compete in an intense best of five series, from which we will see who truly is the strongest crew in the skies.

The Loot
For each member of our champion team, Muse will be providing one costume item, alongside a gift copy of Guns of Icarus Online. Give it to your friend, your "bro", your compadre. Or keep it for yourself and make a smurf account with an amusing name. We won't judge. You earned it.

The Signup
Post in this thread team names and crew rosters. Rosters may be modified at any point, the only hard rule being that nobody may play on two separate teams. You may provide a logo to be used on stream. Teams both old and new are welcome; everyone gets a chance to show their stuff. Signups will close on Monday, May 20th, five days before the event kickoff.

The Schedule
All days are currently scheduled to start at 4PM Eastern Standard Time. You can find that in your local time here. We're estimating each day to run about three hours.

The Live Stream
Each day of the Sky Tournament will be streamed live and cast by analysis wizards Qwerty2jam and PapaParadox. The plan is to have every match on stream, with the exception of the championship bracket, where only one quarterfinals match will be broadcasted with the semifinals, due to time concerns. Be sure to tune in!

Feel free to use this thread to post any questions or concerns you may have. The signup thread is here. You may also add me on Steam to contact directly. Hope to see you in the sky!
